Well, here we are: The statistical baseline based on expected score for the 13th Week.
Green Bay at Dallas -- Intriguingly the computer shows that GB has achieved its 10-1 record against a slightly tougher schedule; however, although GB has the tougher defense, Dallas has the more dynamic offense, and the way the numbers play out expect Dallas to win by 1. In fact, many of the games this week are very, very close -- within one point or less -- and statistical draws.
Atlanta at St. Louis
Buffalo at Washington
Detroit at Minnesota -- Note that this is not technically an "upset," because these numbers represent what you'd expect the final score to be.
Houston at Tennessee
Jacksonville at Indianapolis
N.Y. Jets at Miami -- First time ever that Miami is favored by the numbers, but by less than a point. This has to be one of the most interesting results the computer's come up with yet.
San Diego at Kansas City
Seattle at Philadelphia
San Francisco at Carolina
Cleveland at Arizona
Denver at Oakland
N.Y. Giants at Chicago
Tampa Bay at New Orleans -- Tampa Bay remains the NFC's best defense.
Cincinnati at Pittsburgh
New England at Baltimore -- I think I'm going to DIE from the lack of surprise at this prediction.
The data for your perusal is, as usual, right here (http://rimbosity.com/scores.html).

Assuming that many people in this thread are in the same boat as me and can't get the NFL network, how are people planning to keep up on the big Packers/Cowboys game? I have no idea how to find out if any local radio stations are going to play it, but I'm hoping to get it that way.

The whole point is to force the cable companies to carry it in their basic package, which they won't do. The cable companies want to carry it in their sports tier and charge sports fanatics only for it, which the NFL doesn't want. The cable companies say that people who are super hyped for the NFL have already left cable for the Direct TV NFL package and the people who are left don't want to pay for what they won't watch.
I agree with the cable companies for once. No way should the NFL be able to tell them how to do business. It does suck entirely not to be able to see this Green Bay game, but like the cable companies say, if I cared that much I'd get Direct TV.

According the Milwaukee newspaper, the rights to broadcast the game have been purchased by local Green Bay and Milwaukee stations. I don't know how, they must have paid the NFL Network a shit-ton of money.
caesarbear
11-28-2007, 10:22 PM
No more money than normal. The NFL has to sell to the regional markets. The battle is only over the national rights.
btw, there are already some internet links appearing for a stream of the game.
Alan Dunkin
11-28-2007, 10:37 PM
No the battle is for television broadcast period; far as I know the game will not be shown in Dallas at all. Same thing happened last year. The reason why the NFL Network has these games is because it wants to control everything there is about them, including who gets to see it, since it's their product. The NFL and the broadcasters agreed with these terms when the renegotiations took place a year and a half ago, that brought the NFL to NBC on Sunday nights and moved MNF to ESPN. If the broadcasters in Wisconsin managed to secure regional rights then I'm sure they paid out the ass for it and it's very much a one-off.

I just wanted to add that the cable/sat companies have to pay the NFL Network to carry the channel, so the issue is whether they should be forced to include it in with the basic packages or not, since it increases their costs. Many providers feel that NFL Network is not a valuable enough channel to justify being part of basic packages, since it's viewership is seasonal and is quite low outside of a few NFL games each season.

Yeah, I don't know why it became a news story that the game will be broadcast in Milwaukee and Green Bay. I'm sure all of this was planned well in advance. The NFL knows that local broadcasters can't afford millions, so I'm sure the cost is equal to a normal special local event. The NFL gets special exemptions from US anti-trust laws for broadcasting and in return they have to provide local affliates coverage as long as the games are sell outs, which for GB and Dallas, is no problem.

Out of those people are going to want...yep the NFL. The rest are just there to make it look like a package.
I get your arguement. But How about this: take all those god channels and throw those in a tier. Or the shopping channels. I don't want to pay for those and I have to. So those people that watch that crap should have to help pay for the channels I watch and they dont.
As for local- the deal in place is, the NFL net games are shown in the teams local markets. So I will still see the Pats-NYG game. Of course this gets tricky in some of the bigger states/fan bases where I'm betting some areas are not going to have the game at all.

There's a lot of people who can't get the NFL Network. Why do you think there's so much complaining?
--- Alan
I thought it was the extra money. I knew people complained about it a year ago, when these games happened, but I thought the Cable companies fixed it by offering NFLN as part of a sports tier. That's how it is here, with Comcast. So I figured people today weren't paying the extra. In any case, the whole thing stinks.
Honestly, NFLN is one of the things I like about DirecTV. I also like their HD programming and the SD signal, so I would go satellite either way. But I use DSL even though I prefer cable internet in large part because I don't want cable television for the aforementioned reasons. Right now I have a second home that I stay at from time to time and it has Comcast and no NFLN (didn't pay the extra since it's not my main home). It really does hurt not to have it.

I do wonder why the sponsors of the NFL Network games aren't pushing harder to get this resolved. I mean they pay millions of dollars for commercials that won't be seen by millions of football fans. This doesn't make a lot of sense, and I would think that they will prove to be the force that resolves this issue.

The NFL is swimming in money. They don't need to cave into advertiser demands.
Um but they are swimming in money because they caved into advertiser demands :). That's what Pete Rozelle's legacy is, changing the game to suit TV and its corporate sponsors. You can't think that the NFL gets most of its money directly from fans? No way could the stadium gate alone pay for the salaries of the NFL players.
So yeah, eventually the sponsors will want to see this resolved. My bet is at the end of the year and that cable wins.

I was commenting to my wife last night on how we have sunk so low, as we had to resort to watching the Game Update page on NFL.com to get our Cowboy's fix.
"Oh look, it updated, let's see. Awesome! Cowboys picked up 40 yards on defensive pass interference."
But I do have to admit that little drive graphic that use is really neat technology.
Even as a Cowboy's fan, I still don't see why people think T.O. is so good. He's more volatile than good. Some nights he does what he is paid to do, other nights, he lets bad things happen, like interceptions in the end zone happen when he fails to catch a ball thrown right at him.
ESPN has another article talking about "the combo of Tony Romo and Terrell Owens", but I starting to believe the more solid combo is Romo and Whitten. Whitten may not be as glamorous catching the ball, but he is definitely more solid at making the catch and picking up a first down.

My take is the forward-momentum-stopped-fumble-strip call/non-call in the first quarter regarding Terrell Owens (I was listening and didn't see the play but apparently his forward momentum was not stopped before getting the ball stripped), and I guess a pass interference call on a pass to Miles Austin in the 4th where his legs just got tripped up with the defender? Oh and I think there was an obvious hold on a long Cowboys run that ended up not getting called.

Incidental contact and all, but if you're unlucky enough to have put your hands on the guy right when the incidental contact occurs, regardless of why he fell you're sort of screwed.
It's not like G.B. demonstrated much of an ability to stop them anyway. I'm not convinced the outcome wouldn't have been the same (albeit closer) with both big calls reversed -- they were on a roll in the interference-call drive, it just came faster. Hell, if T.O. doesn't lateral the ball to the defender in the end-zone (hilarious) it's already another 7 points the other way. G.B. was outplayed this time, and injuries played a big part of it (Rodgers was impressive though). The next one should be a screamer.

Despite the fact that I picked Washington and lost, I can't help but laugh at how they lost the game--Buffalo has it on the Wash 33, Wash attempts to ice the kicker, but calls two consecutive time outs and gets called for unsportsmanlike, the ball gets moved fifteen yards and Buffalo nails the FG to win. That's just too funny.
I also think today might have broken the overall one-day record for the most interceptions--there were assloads of them all over.

Andy Reid refused to heed the old adage "Kick Early and Go For It Late."
Eagles had first and goal at the end of the first half. It's 21-17 Seahawks at that point. They make it to 3rd and goal on the 1, but Westbrook is denied on 3rd down. Instead of kicking the easy FG, they try for the TD and fail.
End of the second half, they're down 28-24. They get the ball back under the two minute warning, having burned all their TOs in order to do so. Westbrook gets them awesome field position thanks to his punt return to around the 20. But they can't just run it up the middle and then kick the easy winning FG, can they? They'd only be losing by 1 point if they'd gotten the easy FG earlier. Feeley tries to force it into the middle, where Lofa Tatupu has already picked off Feeley twice today...and Tatupu picks him off again, game over.

I agree, though the announcers did have a valid point when they noted that Philly is at the point where they have to start taking chances if they have any hope of making the playoffs this year. In that context, the conventional wisdom has be be set aside.
I find it interesting that Seattle's defense isn't getting much credit. Yeah, they give up yards and look unremarkable in many areas, and yet they are near the top of the league in terms of points allowed. I actually felt pretty confident as the game progressed that their defense would not give up any more points.

They have to play Buffalo and New England on the road, those are both going to be hard for Miami to win. But...they essentially lost the game because of it. Also, it's not like like kicking a FG to only be one point behind is laying up or playing it overly safe. A dumb decision is still a dumb decision. That's like saying Philly should always go for TDs instead of kicking FGs, which just isn't smart no matter where they stand for the season.

Where do you get 12th overall? I'm talking about average points allowed, where they are 4th overall going into this weekend. Since the game is determined by points, not yards, I'm inclined to think it's a more important indicator of how good a defense is when it comes to wins and losses.

Ha ha ... I actually put it in my previous post, then edited it out. Here's the algorithm I've used this year (except for some disastrous gut-feeling picks):
1) Always pick New England.
2) Usually pick against the Browns (my hometown team). This hedges my emotional bets (and they've made me pay this year by being unusually good).
3) Compare the DVOAs on footballoutsiders.com. They claim home field advantage is worth about 17 points of DVOA. If it's close, pick the home team.
I end up picking home teams more than anybody else (sometimes to my detriment).

Damn this week! I've been going steadily downhill for the past three weeks in a row now. Ouch.
Man, officiating in the NFL is either at an all time low, or these guys just got away with a lot of bad calls for years because we didn't have the technology to catch them at it before now. Of course, it doesn't help matters that so many game changing calls are "official's judgement" and thus unreviewable, or that coaches can call a TO or throw a flag and try to erase a play. I predict that within a decade officiating in NFL games will all be done by computers using digital replay analysis technology and laser sensors embedded in the ball, the field and the uniforms.

Yeah I blew it this week too.
As for officiating, I think Willie Parker's turnover massacre last night were almost all very close either way, though like 3 of them were overturned.
I think the Cleveland one, the push out of bounds at the end, could have been pretty close and in real life it certainly would have looked like he was leaping out of bounds anyway, but... yeah the unreviewable notion because of "official's judgement" can really be hurtful.

I picked Arizona to win that game so I was biased, but even I have to admit that the call could have gone the other way. I hate to say it, but as the last play of the game and potentially turning a victory into a loss for the home team, my guess is that the officials were inclined to spend less time then they might otherwise have seeing if he was in bounds. If that play was in the third quarter, for example, I could very easily have seen them giving it to the Browns.

Wow, somebody really wanted that pats to win this game. Timeout on the 4th down stop, penalties all over the place on the last drive, somewhat questionable TD catch.
Let's drop the conspiracy theory bs please.
The Pats didn't deserve that win. I don't know where to put the blame, whether on Billick or the players, but wow, what a meltdown.

Never seen a kickoff from that close before, dang. Scott looked like he was going to go deck the official if it weren't for his teammates dragging him off.

By “somebody” I actually meant a higher power/fate type of thing rather than any conspiracy, sorry for not being clearer.

What a game. I though the TD looked pretty good from the angles they showed but that Ravens time out on the Pat's 4th down was awful.

What a bunch of crybabies.
"I didn't hear a timeout. That was very convenient."

To add to the controversy, by rule Rex Ryan shouldn't be able to call a timeout.
