View Full Version : VF5 - playable with the 360 control pad?

Okay, this time I'll try posting in the right place...
I know that Hori sells some fancy $60 stick, but I don't want VF5 badly enough to pay $120 for it, so: How well does it work with the normal 360 controller? I know/suspect the D-pad is unworkable, but can you use the analog stick to do all the moves you'd want to do?
(Yes, I know there's a demo. It seemed fine to me, but I haven't played VF in any serious way since VF2 on the Saturn, and it's impossible to tell if the controls suck when you're just button-mashing.)

It depends how good you are manipulating that tiny analog stick while fighting. I think it stinks for fighting games in general, but it's still better than the 360's d-pad.

I abhor the 360 controller for trying to play any fighting games. I'd say pick up the Hori's or don't bother. On the bright side, the 360 does a fantastic job with BC for SC2.
I can play SC2 better on the XPlorer than I can on the 360 pad.

Have you guy tried sanding it down or doing the knife trick?

If by "knife trick" you mean robbing a Best Buy with a concealed weapon, yes. Totally didn't work.

Weird. That worked for getting my wii.

Seems to have helped with mine, but I haven't fully tested it out. Should load up training mode in DoA so I can see directional arrows and tell how much of a difference it really made.
If you have a stick on the PS2, there is a converter for PS2 controllers, sadly it's 60 bucks. Though it's a keyboard/mouse converter too.

My problem with the D-pad on the 360 isn't the high, thick edge, it's that the thing sometimes doesn't detect that I've pushed it down. I have two wireless controllers and they have the same problem.

The edge thickness is what causes that mushy feeling, because the edge of the cross pad can impact the border and cause it to not depress all the way.

This is even if I push hard, and it really only affects the down and right direction. I guess it could be the edge, but it feels like the problem is underneath.

I officially can't play it with the d-pad. Has there ever been a worse single element of a game's controls than (every 360 game ever) trying to make use of this ridiculously crappy d-pad? IT IS MADE OF PURE SUCK.
I'm having a surprisingly easy time with the analog sticks, though. Usually I can't play fighting games reliably with a console gamepad's analog sticks, but so far I've pulled off whatever moves I've wanted almost every single time. Bear in mind that VF doesn't demand as much from you in the way of insane joystick motions as do some other fighting games like Guilty Gear, and I think that's a big part of the reason why I've done fine.

Also, that new Nintendo thing, you know, before you ended up in jail and bent over getting the wii.

The design of the X-Plorer actually works really well for 3d fighting games, except that the d-pad on it (while miles better than the 360's piece of shit pad) reverses left and right which is hard to get used to. I haven't tried using the GH3 guitar yet - it may work fine.

So.... Assuming that I'm not going to invest in an arcade stick:
Should I get VF5 for PS3 or 360?
PS3=cheap copy ($20-$30), presumably better D-pad.
360=expensive copy ($60), (laggy) online play, achievements.
Also, a funny little anecdote about that shitty 360 D-pad. I work with someone now who used to be a high profile 360-related exec. I was complaining to him about that shitty-ass d-pad, and how it sucks for everything, but fighting games are especially bad.
He gave me the inside scoop that the controller was designed the way it was specifically for fighting games, to allow for easier 'rolling' motions for fireballs and the like.
Boy, did they fuck that up.

Reports are that the online is pretty solid. Also, VF5 360 is supposed to be $40 next week at Circuit City.

its the edge tromik. I did it for SOTN. I thought the same thing you do, and you are correct, but that feeling is caused by the edge. you'll do more carving on those sides where it doesnt register as well as a result before it feels right.

I grabbed this on sale, I'll be up for some multiplayer online if anyone else is interested. Probably not tonight though as I think it's going to be CoD4 night.

I would. Really. But I still have no 360.

Oh hey everybody I am a complete and utter idiot and if you're serious about getting good at this game then you should get that Hori joystick instead of trying to rely on the 360 controller.
I still think I was able to play VF5 much better with analog sticks than I have any other fighting games, but I had a serious problem getting diagonal directions to register consistently, which of course is an enormous problem in this game. After spending about 5 minutes with the Hori stick I decided to buy one despite the hefty price. It's that much better.

I really, really want to be playing this, but I know I won't enjoy it without the stick, and I don't have the $100-120 laying around to drop on it, unfortunately.

As much as I've always hated the bunching of too many game releases to Oct-Dec, the dynamics of Xbox Live are making me hate it even more these days because I'd like to play this but I already have way too many games on tap and coming soon to buy it now. When I do buy it sometime next year the people still playing online will probably mostly be the extreme hardcore who have been playing 8 hours a day since release.
