When I was going through basic training, there was a dude in my room from Oklahoma. We got in a fight one day because he was absolutely convinced that all "e"s are supposed to make an "i" sound...or something. He actually got angry when I tried to explain that, no, "pen" and "pin" are not pronounced exactly the same.

He told me to get a dictionary and look it up.
