View Full Version : Well, it finally happened

I saw a big ol' pile of Wiis at my local Best Buy today. First time I've seen even a single unit in the flesh at retail since launch day.

Hope for the Holidays yet?

I figured Gary finally got the RROD (if he already did, sorry I wasn't paying attention). That's the first thing that comes to mind any time someone starts a thread with a title like this. Way to go Xbox.

I googled (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=filthy&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2) filthy images with safe search off. I was too scared to look. Someone click on it and find out how horrible it really is.

I've been seeing boxed Wiis at Target fairly regularly and Bundles are always available at BJs and Costco.

Ha ha. That would certainly suck. I mean it's right on the eve of a major release. Arguably THE major release. Yeah that would suck alright.

And it does.

Got RROD today.

Greetings:
Funny, I was going to dig up the old Wii thread, because I dropped by BB today, and sure enough, there were half a dozen of them in the case. I guess they've finally turned the corner on that supply issue. It'll be interesting to see how that affects sales over the next few months.

Best,
Michael.

I don't think I've ever seen Wii sold out here, but that's not saying it's selling badly, either.
I think Scandinavian sales are pretty healthy. I keep recommending it to people,
even though I don't have one myself.

I was in downtown Toronto yesterday and the flagship HMV (one of our big music store chains, not sure if they exist in the US) store on Yonge Street as well as the smaller one in the Eaton Centre both had signs saying "Wii's in stock".

Haven't seen any in the aisles at a Best Buy or EB yet, but it looks like the supply/demand tide is finally starting to turn into something more reasonable.

I hate those sigs because it makes quoting that little bit more crappy.

I find sigs bizarre -- it's as though you think we all have some kind of memory disorder, and can't remember the author from one line to the next.

They're just noise for me.

I look over to the left while reading, because moist people don't use signatures. Sometimes I look belatedly, though. I once clicked "Quote" to prepare an indignant reply, only to see the post's text appear in the edit window prefixed by QUOTE=Unicorn McGriddle.

Edit: If you didn't understand the point of that last sentence, look to the left.

So... you're saying that you tried to quote someone... and it was you... quoting someone using your name?

Post-signing is mainly a habit I developed from Usenet, which is something you kids don't know anything about.

This program posts news to thousands of machines throughout the entire
civilized world. Your message will cost the net hundreds if not thousands of
dollars to send everywhere. Please be sure you know what you are doing.

Are you absolutely sure that you want to do this?

So... you're saying that you tried to quote someone... and it was you... quoting someone using your name?

If you quote a post, whether it's your own or not, the entire text of the post above the "Quote" button you clicked appears in the Reply to Thread post-editing window, enclosed in quote tags with the poster's name.

So when I wrote this post, I started with the following automatically replicated text:

Doing a quick search on google groups/deja, my earliest Usenet post that I can find is from 1990, though I'm sure I was using Usenet for at least 3 years at that point.

Back to the original topic, I stopped by Target today, and they had almost a dozen in their case. I think the drought is over. Either that, or the demand has peaked and is falling. It will be interesting to see which is the case.

Anecdotally, I still look for Wiis whenever I go to a Target or Best Buy or their ilk. I've seen them in stock three times in the last month, but I never see more than two or three at a time (and twice when I saw them, somebody was in the process of buying one. So in the DC area I'd say demand is still very strong.

I just saw my first Wii on shelves, this weekend, almost a year after launch. It's pretty damn cheap - can definitely see it as an impulse purchase - it's less than half the price of the PS3 here.

Yep, same here. Was in a Target this weekend and saw six or so Wiis in the case.

The crazy thing is that we're almost into the holiday shopping season, so it's entirely possible that they could become rarer than rocking horse shit again...
