I guess I figured that if you never finished Halo or Halo 2 and all you cared about was single player that you would choose either "later if I hear good things" or "never."

I have it on preorder but with slow shipping, since I probably won't get my replacement 360 for a little while yet. And I'm still working on Halo 2...

So what if my reading comprehension sucks you INCONSIDERATE ASSHOLE!
That being said, I heard the moderately more expensive version comes with a DVD that has all the cutscenes of the previous story bits from the first two games. Is this true? If so I might just pick it up. Assuming the game actually runs at a decent framerate and doesn't look like ass.
edit: Never said I wasn't a consumer whore. Plus I really liked Halo 1. It'd be nice if Halo 3 made up for how crappy Halo 2 was.

Better to get in on the ground floor so you can keep up with the learning curve. If you wait 6 mos, the only people playing online will be the super-hardcore and you'll never be able to hang. It's like trying to play the original Counter-Strike now.

Halo 3? Oh yeah. That little console shooter. I played it, when it was called Quake 2 in 1997.
Now if the Mortyr franchise were to hit the XBox 360s, that would be something special.

The only games I play online are online-only games. There has yet to be an exception to this that doesn't fit in the mold of "tried it once or twice because I was curious".

I dunno. I picked waiting on reviews, because it's not a game I'll rush out and buy, but it's probably a game I'll get suckered into buying via friends or the orgasmic anecdotes about online play.

The mouse is a significant part of that, for sure, but there seem to be design-philosophy-related reasons too.

Normally, I would get it after work on tuesday. Unfortunetly, I forgot that the 25th was the release date and I'm schedualed to be on a plane by mid day. The Warden's not allowing me to bring the 360 with us on our little venture.
So the next logical thing to do is wait in line monday, buy it right at midnight, stay up and play all night, then sleep on the plane.
What do we tick for "pre-ordered a Cat Hat"? I'm getting it on release day, but I'm paying someone else to "virtually" stand in line for me.

There are exceptions. Any of those Atlus RPGs or TBS RPGs were impossible to find, and when they'd pop into store 6 months later with a shipment of three copies, they'd actually gone up in price.
And of course, you can find most of the 360 launch games for $10 or less. There are so many copies of the bundled GRAW floating around that stores are practically giving the used copies away for free.

I'm not sure I'd call GRAW an exception to my thoughts on that, Tromik, but I was a fan of the original GR, and original Rainbow 6. They're completely different games now which suffered from an awful transitional game(Ghost Recon 2/Rainbow Six 3). Atlus games were originally a case of underproduction, but incredible word of mouth and a super dedicated fanbase did the job.
These days, though, it seems a lot of games(especially sports annuals) don't drop until a sequel comes out or 3 years.
Well, in game stores. Amazon is another beast entirely.

Is it the extra fees that console developers have to pay to the hardware manufacturers that make console games so expensive, or is it just what the market supports?

Hey, Desslock, in case you reconsider, I picked up Halo 3 (regular edition) for $59.99 CAD today at HMV in Montreal. I understand it's the same price in Toronto. At $59.99, it's the same price as the US version, which is fair considering the current exchange rate. Otherwise you're absolutely correct in that we're getting robbed.

Few things gaming-related piss me off faster than some jerkoff at a pre-order-happy retail store suggesting that I might miss out on a new SOFTWARE release due to low supplies, or that I'm somehow lucky I managed to get a copy even though I was stupid and didn't preorder. Usually when they start that spiel I'll just tell the guy to tell me for sure if they have any copies because otherwise I'll just go to the Best Buy down the street.

What might have been better was that they are trying to combine sales of Halo 3 to pre-orders for Halo Wars, a game that doesn't really have a release date yet.
It's not surprising that GS is making a killing off interest on pre-order money and guaranteed sales based on these things. I know a lot of people who would certainly have signed up for it.

Yeah, I'm thinking I shouldn't even have started on Heroic. That first Chieftan with a hammer, that location was tough, with the snipers on the far side. I'm finally starting to get a groove now that I'm out of the jungle. Need to use the equipment more than I do too.

There's a spot in the third episode with a bunker on a hill where you have to defend for a few minutes, and that part alone took me something like 25 minutes.
This is a lot harder than I remember Halo 2 being on Heroic. I'm definitely going to need co-op help for Legendary.

I didn't have TOO much trouble with the first hammer guy since it was a nice wide open battlefield. The second hammer guy you encounter, though...ooooooof. I've been trying to clear that room for the last hour with no success. It's hard enough to kill all his minions, but once the doomhammer approaches I usually freak out and run into a wall.

It wasn't the hammer guy as much as it was the snipers on the other side of the bridge.

Too many fucking snipers, IMO. And with no clue that they are there.
So you pop out of cover for a split second to take a peek, and fucking 18 dipshits blast your head off. Uh, yeah, THAT'S FUN GUYS! Reminds me of that one level in Jedi Outcast that had like 3,700,000 disruptor rifle snipers blasting you while you were stuck on a fucking tiny floating garbage conveyor car.
Of course, the flip side is that cooperative mode on the same difficulty setting is cake -- if both players are being patient and using cover.

The snipers in Halo 3 glow bright blue, you can easily spot them from 10 billion miles away.

Sure. If you just so happen to be lightning fast at finding a single glowing bright blue (though it looks more purple than blue to me) spot in an upper treeline somewhere. If you are fast, you might get off a shot (assuming you have an anti-sniper weapon on hand) before they do.
Even if you do manage to spot one sniper, odds are that there are at least 2 more in other areas opposite, but near, the first that will shoot you in the head whenever you try to line up a shot to kill the first.
Yeah, Heroic definitely involves some out-of-the-blue sniper deaths before you learn where they are.

Yeah I was carrying a Brute Shot and a Needler in the part where I kept dieing. Eventually I picked up a Carbine off some Jackal that was trying to flank me and was able to finish it.

It's very typically bad game design. You have to die to figure out how to live. It's also way too early in the game for that kind of crap.
The biggest problem with this game so far for me is they've obviously designed it around the thinking everyone played the other two. Maybe that's true, but it sure as heck doesn't make it fun.

That's sooooooo true. After messing around with Halo 3 for a while, I went back and started a game of Halo 1 on the PC, and it's so much more user-friendly starting out. Halo 3 really starts you in the thick of things, and assumes you know the combat/creatures/weapons, etc. very well already.
I was actually enjoying Halo 1 on the PC again, quite a bit. Maybe I'll pick up Halo 2 and upgrade to Vista after all now, since I'd rather play the higher res PC version since I missed H2 the first time around.

Well I think the people that haven't played a Halo really shouldn't be starting on Heroic difficulty.

The snipers just aren't a problem for me in Halo 3, at least not during my initial Heroic playthrough. I hate traditional snipers (as seen in most any World War II FPS) as much as anyone but the Halo 3 snipers are incredibly visible and I don't find myself killed by them unless I'm rushing stupidly into the open. This isn't Gears or anything, but being smart about cover still applies, especially given the armor/health regen system.

I'm pretty sure I know the part you are talking about and, yeah, that one kicked my ass. Part of the problem is the game picks the oddest times for Checkpoints. I've been boned where I've just make it through the first wave of something by the skin of my teeth only to start a checkpoint on a second wave when all of my allies are dead and I've used up most of my good ammo.
However, in that bunker battle I ultimately kind of skipped it. Once the tank shows up I had almost given up because I had zero ammo to take it out from afar and melee'ing just attracted hordes of other baddies. So I finally said screw it and just ran down the path, triggered another checkpoint and I didn't have to deal with the baddies I had left behind.
Also, this board desperately needs spoiler tags.

What? The Brute Shot is probably my favorite weapon in the whole game, I like it even more than the flamethrower.

Don't get me wrong, I like it. Its just...
Absolutely NO ammo for it where I currently am.
