Watching the Sunday morning press shows this morning with my coffee. Biden was hit by Russert with his own words from a year back, where he said pulling out of Iraq before things settled down would be a disaster, and setting a deadline for pulling out would just give the bad guys a date to hang on to. But he did a pretty decent job of discussing why he is saying something different now - it sounded like political BS, of course, but he delivered it in a smooth manner and didn't look as awkward as many would when hit with that type of surprise question with his own words contradicting his stand. McCain was being pressed hard by Stephanopolis and I was surprised by how well he came across, he seems to be more confident and more thoughtful than in the recent past, and even when being pushed hard by George he was personable when pushing back.
Then Stephanopolis interviewed Kerry, and I remembered why he lost in an election that almost any candidate should have won. Kerry sounded wooden, he sounded like he was reciting a series of platforms, when asked whether he thought Petraeus was an honorable and honest man after showing the general's statements, just kind of stammered around with a lot of words that didn't really answer the question, then went back into his standard statements in that lecturing, phony, I'm-really-deep voice. The guy just can't come across as personable or likeable or anything other than pure political to save his life.
The good news for the Democrats is that any of the top candidates, and even some of the minor candidates, are better candidates than Kerry.
About to close, but in the roundtable George Will and the other panel members continue to berate Thompson - with the exception of Sam Donaldson, who says people, I have some real deja vu of another candidate some years ago, who we in the press laughed about and ridiculed and declared a lazy, no-brains unelectable candidate, who then dominated the American political scene for 8 years.
