View Full Version : Wing Commander on XP: Can it be done?

I loved Wing Commander like kin, and I never got a chance to play Wing Commander II (although I did play a little III). Is it too late for me?

I remember many moons ago, EA released a special CD-ROM Windows 95 native edition of Wing Commander, and I've held my breath hoping that some intrepid soul would do the same for XP, but it seems that that's never coming.

Is there some way to run original recipe Wing Commander with sound and everything? Is DOS Box the answer? Or should I just look around for a 386 or a Sega CD at a garage sale?

Gametap (www.gametap.com) has Wing Commanders I, IV, and Prophecy. Seems like that would be your easiest solution.

Oooh. Does GameTap support joysticks? Can I get the XBox 360 adapter for my laptop and use that?

I've played so many old-school games with absolutely no hiccups whatsoever over the past few months. Although I haven't tried Wing Commander II yet, (I should), I'd be willing to bet that DOSBox is in fact the answer.

The Kilrathi Saga edition of WC1-3 works on modern computers, and has an appropriate frame rate limiter, etc. Hard to find though.

Warez = easy. Retail box = hard to find and expensive. Not really worth it when 1/2 of it is on gametap.

Here's (http://www.crius.net/zone/showthread.php?t=16383) a thread on how to get WC games to run in DOSBox. I have no idea if it works or not. I found it using google. ;)

The Home Of The Underdogs has got a copy of the Wing Commander Saga which contains 1, 2 and all the add ons. It runs flawlessly in XP with all the music, sound and joystick support.
