-Tom
No, it is what it says: Of those who viewed the 360, X% actually went and bought item Y. What's significant is that BioShock is the one game on that list. Which suggests that I am not the only person who just bought a 360 for the sole purpose of playing BioShock.
And given comments I've made over the past year about the ridiculousness of the price of the 360, and that there is no such thing as a must-have game, that should tell you something.
I mean, besides the fact that I'm a hypocrite.
And now I really want to see the NPD numbers for THIS month. Forget last month's PS3 price drop numbers... I wanna see BioShock sell like crazy.

The hardest part of this -- the thing that worried me the most -- will be hiding the thing from my kid. (Who has gotten huge since you last saw him, btw... I can no longer carry him as a semi-permanent attachment on my hip; too heavy and too big.)
But, yeah, that is encouraging to see some people are grabbing BioShock with their new Xboxen.

I'm predicting they're wrong. I know that Bioshock came out in August, but with the push of GTAIV I think people were jumping on the XBox train even a month ago.

The Canadian NPD stats are out and the PS3 did indeed outsell the 360. The Canadian stats can vary quite a bit from the US though (in June, Wii had an 8:1 margin over the PS3 whereas it was only around 4:1 in the US).

No, 5% of the people who viewed the 360 premium page AND bought something (instead of just closing the browser) bought an Elite. That could be instead of or in addition to.

I'm very close to getting a 360. I'm somewhat sick of screwing with the PC and constant upgrades when I can just plunk down $350 and be done with it. The only thing holding me back right now is games costing $20 more and having no mouse and keyboard. Bioshock runs well on my PC but I think I would have been happier just dropping the disc in and playing rather than tweaking it and trying to set up custom resolutions.

$350 ....
Plus $ for an additional controller
Plus $ for the wireless recharge thingy
Plus $ for a wireless adaptor (unless you're close to an ethernet port).
Plus $ for the sub to Live
Not to mention the RROD hanging over your head. So while I'll say buying a 360 is certainly a viable option, it's not quite so clear cut as $350 and done.

Don't applaud just yet. This kind of thing on PCs is surely coming to consoles sometime soon as it would render the hated used game market completely useless.
My guess is that the activation scheme on the PC is more to prevent sharing the game and generate more sales from stopping that than it is to stop piracy.

So... all week we've had pundits predicting that the PS3 will outsell the XBox in July because of the price drop.
Apparently, these pundits didn't consult the GameCube when they made this pronouncement. While circumstances were different then, the bottom line is that content sells the platform, in the long run. The platform does not sell the platform, unless that platform is so revolutionary that it dramatically improves what content it has. This is not the case with the PS3 (but a subjective argument can be made for the Wii). Nor is there any breakthrough PS3 title that's making people this close to pulling the trigger, but for the price tag.
Saying that PS3 sales will increase because the unit is less expensive is like saying more people will pile into your limousine if you add more seating space. If the demand isn't there, it doesn't matter.

See, there ought to be laws against that sort of shit. It goes completely against the Doctrine of First Sale. Fine, they own the software, but I ought to be able to sell my copy/license to someone else and have it work for them too. Too f'ing bad if it means they make slightly less money: last I checked, wringing every last dime from people willy-nilly wasn't in the Bill of Rights.
Also, it will _reduce_ sales. Some people who buy Game X on day one now, with the expectation of being able to sell it a month later for 15 bucks less, just won't buy it. Or if they buy this one, well guess what, when Game Y comes down the pike in two months, they have to come up with 60 more "new" bucks vs. just the 15 they had to when they could sell their game X. Maybe some of them have to spend those 45 bucks to pay the electric bill, or eat or something. Reverse-kaching-- that's a lost sale.

So I guess the Games For Windows initiative is working as intended.
I wish I could have purchased this for my PC. It's always my preferred platform even with install issues. It's just a better platform to use for just about every other reason including a lot of market-related issues (i.e. being locked into one proprietary device sucks as a consumer).
But my PC is old and busted. And I don't feel like throwing out the money to do anything about that. Admittedly this is a very powerful argument for the 360.

Saying that PS3 sales will increase because the unit is less expensive is like saying more people will pile into your limousine if you add more seating space. If the demand isn't there, it doesn't matter.
However there is demand, just not as much as Sony would like. Your argument only makes sense if you really think there is no demand whatsoever (at which point no PS3's would sell). Sony definitely needs some better content to hock but that doesn't mean that lowering the price won't stoke up a bit of consumer action. Right now they they're in a very tricky spot: trying to get enough games to interest consumers and and at the same time trying to get enough consumers to make sure that games get developed for the system.

Oh, it uses AA batteries. I have a charger and rechargables for that. OK, whew, that's one thing i don't need to buy.
But I do need some kind of wireless adapter before I can plug into the net. *sigh* That thing's almost a hundred bucks! yicch.
maybe this weekend I'll finally wire the far wall with ethernet instead. Yeah, maybe I'll do that...

Keep in mind that there's nothing magical about the xbox wireless adapter - I believe any cheap-ass wireless bridge can be used, but don't quote me on that.
But, yeah, it uses AA batteries - I still bought the little wired charger, because it's simpler for me to plug in my device when it gets low on battery rather than have to yank the batteries out.

There's been like 20 threads on the wireless adapter in the Hardware forum - any wireless bridge will work, the reason the 1st party one is expensive is it does 802.11a (and 11a is still fucking expensive no matter who makes it).

Not sure I agree with your logic.
Yes, fewer titles will be sold overall, because used titles will no longer be available. But it seems likely that the total amount of money people allocate to gaming will stay the same, and this will go entirely to new titles rather than to a mix of new and old.
So, to speak directly to your example, gamer A may buy fewer new titles because he can't recoup the cost by selling his old titles, but gamer B (who in your example was the one who bought the used titles) would instead spend that money on new titles, so it's a wash at worst, and possibly a net gain as there are "must have" titles that people will buy regardless. I'm sure that Rockstar would rather have people buy a $19.99 re-release of GTA3 instead of buying a used copy where they see no money.
I mean, has digital distribution (which doesn't allow reselling games) hurt sales of PC titles?

Rimbo, you fool! We've been told more than once that everyone who would be interested in buying <insert AAA game here> for the 360 already HAS a 360, and so there shouldn't be any expectation of increased sales.

First, "boxen" is not a word. I don't know why the Linux/Unix community thought it would be cute to pluralize "box" that way, but the even more ridiculous thing is that people seem to think it's actually how you pluralize it when referring to computer stuff. Not saying you do, Rimbo - it's just a big pet peeve of mine.
Second...how does that Amazon thing show that Bioshock is selling Xboxes? It seems to me to show that people who look up a 360 on Amazon mostly buy it, and mostly buy the really hot game that everyone is talking about right now. Is the 3% of them that also buy Bioshock a lot higher than whatever game is usually listed there or something?
The more appropriate graphic, to me, would be the one showing people who browsed Bioshock and shows a significant percentage of them also buy 360s. But when I look at the Bioshock 360 page, it shows that they're buying The Darkness, Mass Effect, and Halo 3 Limited Edition.
I wouldn't be surprised if Bioshock was indeed pushing "fence sitters" over to finally making the purchase, and if the 360 has a bit of an uptick in sales for August, that would make sense. I'm not sure it has the kind of mass-market awareness that is pushing a significant number of people to buy a 360 (that weren't very-nearly-there to begin with).

I believe it's just riffing on German which frequently pluralizes words by adding "-en" (but just as frequently pluralizes in other ways, German is a fucked up language). Either way, it's meant to be humorous, not ignorant.

Yeah, this is probably a case of me seeing what I want to see because, really, 3%... not a lot. I was just surprised to see it was listed there at all and not, say, Madden or something.
Plus, I am one of those people who is purchasing a 360 because of BioShock. Lemme make sure that is perfectly clear: I am going against almost a year of decrying the high cost of the 360/PS3 and loudly declaring on any thread that there is no such thing as a "must have" game because I realized that I must play BioShock, like right now. If you'd asked me even one month ago which next-gen system I'd purchase, I'd have told you then and there that it'd be a Wii or a DS.
I am seriously eating my words from the past year and beyond. And they taste like YUMMY ADAM.

I'm in the process of selling off some games and DVDs to take the sting out of the purchase and will soon be buying a 360. Mainly to play Bioshock. The PC demo wouldn't run on my machine, and I think it's absurd to buy a whole new box when gaming is the only thing I can't do on my current one. I've pretty much walked away from PC gaming.

Verbs of motion and all that, dontcha know. But the pics are lovely, and I'm envious of your console purchase. I'm waiting for the rumored holiday bundle with Forza 2.

I have a 360. But I got BioShock for the PC, and I'm glad I did. The whole game seems like it was designed for PC, what with enemies killing you very fast and tons of small items abound that require fast movement with the mouse to notice in a timely manner.

I thought the Demo was fine, for all of that, with the controller.

It's also "Meine" and "angekommen," not "Meinen" and "angekommenen." But we have a meme to keep up, here. ;)

Thanks! Don't be envious. I'm astonished how big and heavy this monstrosity is. It's ugly, too.

Amazon.com gave me a free trial of Prime, which ships everything 2nd-day for free. Yay!
But I promised myself I wouldn't unpack it until I got some actual, y'know, work done. So I've not released the shrink-wrap yet. Hopefully tonight...

HDMI?
It was the version that was shipping from Amazon.com and thus qualified for free second-day shipping. What cable it uses is irrelevant, however, as I will be using the VGA cable instead:

HDMI?
P.S. Yes, it has the HDMI interface, but not the cable. The game looks truly beautiful in 1280x1024 on our 19" Dell LCD, though.

Are you getting that in fullscreen? I'm using a VGA monitor as well, and I'm getting a letterboxed display. I think Bioshock treats everything with a resolution higher than 640x480 as widescreen.
In my admittedly limited experience, VGA resolution support is dodgy among 360 games. Most behave reasonably, but Tony Hawk's Project 8, for one, gave me a widescreen image that was stretched vertically to fullscreen.

And I'm getting letterboxing @ 1280x1024 with the VGA cable. What are your settings on the System blade?

Oh, nevermind, I was wrong; it is being letterboxed. I honestly hadn't even noticed!

Speaking of new consoles, I swapped my new-for-Bioshock Elite out for a second one after a lock-up and a disc-scratching episode. My first one had the unlucky version of both "luck of the draw" noisy component possibilities, but the new machine has the quiet version of both. Near-silent black-label Nidec fans and the lustworthy Benq DVD drive (look Ma, no more Wahl-inspired buzzing). Lot 726, team CSON, manufactured July 4th, 2007. W00ten!
