I'm looking for a good news site to bookmark. I know I could use CNN or BBC or something...but I want opinions on which is consistently best.

I'd prefer it have some worldnews, some political news, and that sort of thing, rather than entertainment news. At least as the focus.

For specific issues that interest me, I grab an RSS feed from Google News and pull it into Google Reader. For instance, my girlfriend is working on a project in Lesotho, so I have a Google News feed for news with the word "Lesotho" in it there. Otherwise, my home page is www.nytimes.com

Cnn.com just launched a redesign a day or two ago, but their McNews pisses me off as much as anything.

I pretty much hit 5 sites..

www.nytimes.com
www.cnn.com
www.bbc.com
www.latimes.com
www.washingtonpost.com

Google News. It scrapes pretty much every other news site mentioned here. Why go elsewhere?

I also check The Globe and Mail online for Canadian news, and occasionally canada.com for the same. Well, to be precise I have those RSS feeds going to Google Reader and have a folder called "Canadian News" for them.

For some reason I keep going back to www.sfgate.com, even though I don't live in the SF area anymore.

I get the NYTimes.com daily newsletter and subscribe to WSJ.com.

I also have Google New's Top Stories on my RSS reader.

My Way News is a good collection of feeds as a complement to Google news:

Like all redesigns, I figure I'll eventually come to terms with it, like I did with the ABC and CBC News revisions last month. But for now, yeah, it's not good.

myway.com is owned by the ask jeeves people, also knows as the people who thought it would be cool to have a major seach engine support adware directly (http://www.revenews.com/davecole/2006/04/adware_affiliates_and_askcom.html) by paying people to install their search on people's pcs. Fuck anything to do with that company.

I follow several places, but Raw Story (http://rawstory.com) is my favorite for general news.

Ah, Rawstory. I've got a friend who always sends me Rawstory links with an accompanying "RAAAAAWSTORY!!!!" battlecry. They're so unabashedly lefty, it warms the cockles of my heart.

man that nver gets old it's like a timeless classic where the guy does the thing and then the other lady say 'whoa' and we're all like 'man that's classic' and it's just so awesomely neat and can't get enough of it

www.google.com/ig is my start page. I've got a lot of google news on there, as well as some tech stuff.

I also use firefox's Sage RSS plugin to fill in the gaps of sites that I read a lot but that I don't expect to see updated enough to merit a homepage slot. These are sites like espn.com and dooce.com

I don't read internet news as a matter of course unless I'm pointed to it by a forum or blogger. Keep those links coming, because my print news just can't keep up these days.

Google and BBC primarily for general news. I also visit Yomiuri Shimbun every so often for a dose of Japanese quaintness and another perspective on world news; they also have a go column I read.

The Register and The Inquirer for IT stuff, and now that I'm at IDC, several of the IDG -world magazines for IT and telecom industry news.

EE Times for techy hardware sort of stuff. Mostly pretty dull and dry, but every so often they have something really interesting.

Wired News every once in a while for the hell of it, but it's often pretty lame.

Which is a nice change in pace from the unabashedly righty (no, no, we're moderates, really!) bent of main stream media.

Besides, it's not like much of the information actually comes from Rawstory, so the left wing bias mostly shows in which stories they select from primary sources. What I like best is that they often carry stuff I miss elsewhere.

If you want a site with a true left wing bias, I suggest:
Counterpunch (http://counterpunch.org)
Z Magazine (http://zmag.org/weluser.htm)

I skim the headlines there too, as a sort of guilty pleasure. It's generally nothing great, but they occasionally have something offbeat that's pretty cool.

Big Google user but I'd never used this (too few tools back when i first viewed it.) It's looking like a winner now though. I have feeds from all the news sites I usually browse on a single page.

Awesome, thank you for the link.

I've been monogamous to nytimes.com since, like, the beginning of time, but reading this thread makes me think I should modernize. (You promiscuous news sluts.)

Does anyone else hate CNN.com's new redesign?

It's actually a lot more pleasing to my eyes... but they changed it from the beta to its final result. Early beta was a lot cleaner. But still, I like it better than before.

I like that google homepage a lot. But is there a way to make the top image smaller? It takes up too much of the screen.

The Times is still the best US paper I think, but it has gone so far downhill in recent years that I've stopped actually buying it, so I only read selected online stories linked from elsewhere. I used to subscribe for daily delivery (except for the pointless Sunday garbage).
