Most of you guys have probably already played Hunter, but I finally picked it up the other day, and its awesome!! The single player game is pretty challenging from what I’ve played, keeps me on my feet. My buddies and I tried out multiplayer, and that totally rocked! lots more fun, loads of blood and guts…. Hehe. Anybody who hasn’t checked this out yet, cruise over to http://www.ufanz.com/teams/hunter/ one of my buddies sent me this too after we played it http://www.interplay.com/hunter/new-ecard/huntersfinalIP.html
Looks pretty cool. Anybody got any tips on Hunter, or just wanna talk bout the game, let me know!

My tip is to return it before it has zero resale value, as I have already done. I could fool myself into enjoying it for about a week, but it was just so "blah" I couldn't take it any longer. Weird floaty animation, sketchy controls in general, nothing I could really stay excited about at all. There's an outside possibility I was "missing out" by not having anyone around at the time to play multiplayer with, but I can't fathom it being a big enough advancement over the single player that I would've kept it any longer.

Hunter had so much potential. The combat is very nicely rendered (I love the bodies that blow apart progressively, until there are just legs shambling towards you) and the gameplay is reasonably SmashTV-esque.

But my god-- Hardest. Multiplayer. Game. Ever.* It's not too tough in singleplayer, but add 2 or (worse) 3 players and it goes up seemingly exponentially in difficulty. To the point that you have to basically avoid combat and rush through areas, if you want to have any hope of finishing the game. Nothing is less fun than having 3 continues for 3 people, and having to do a boss fight over and over .. and over.. and over! It's that or regress way back in the game via savegame and play ultra conservatively.

Worst of all, there are NO cheat codes for this game of any value whatsoever. We scoured the 'net and found one dinky code that gives all weapons and has a nasty side effect of erasing all of your XP (you do level up). What the fuck is up with that? At least we could have a few hours of fun blowing away enemies, but nooo. Hunter fancies itself a goddamn vampire and zombie killing sim where cheating is strictly verboten!

There are a few other things I don't like about Hunter, like the "find the 13 incredibly annoying hidden skeletons" levels, but they all pale next to the multiplayer difficulty one.

* This one's for you, Chick!

I played Hunter with two other guys from the office... it was a total blast, if not one of the most frustrating games any of us had ever played. We gave up once we got to one of the last bosses (possibly the last one, I'm not sure)... pissed us off to no end. Beyond that, one of the best quick multi-player romps ever. Dunno if it's a buy... probably a rental.

Thread resurrection:

My brother played this tonight (rental). It was cool until we got to the teddy bear. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was impossible to kill. We tried for an hour and a half before packing it in. I'm so glad it is a rental. It could be a great rental if it weren't so damn hard, but as it is I'm just glad I didn't buy it.

The teddy bear is a pain. We had 3 players in, so you can imagine how tough it was at that point. You can have just a single player go in and clear it, then have other people join back in later. I think.

What's really criminal about this game is that THERE AREN'T ANY GOOD CHEAT CODES (I think I noted this above; there is one but it has debilitating side effects). That's like a big fuck you from the developers to the players.

Yeah, the closest we came to killing it was when I attacked it on my own. Infuriating really. Cheat codes would have made it at least playable. Other than the insane bosses, the game is pretty fun on multiplayer - lots of good hack and slash with nice character variety and the ability to level up. Good unclean fun.

Nah... the Teddy Bear is quite beatable with 3 people in the game--it'll take a few tries, but it's doable. Have one guy attack him from behind as he chases another guy around the room. The third guy (Priest is usually best for this, but you'll have to rotate the guy who's being chased) needs to attack from long distance. Everyone has to work together--one guy attacking close, one guy getting chased, and one guy attacking from far away.

It is one mean ass teddy bear. We could get it down to about 1/2 health before dying, with the avenger and defender. The thing about the tb is that it has a myriad of weapons: puke blast, double claw, dive attack, and stomp. If you're close in you can avoid the puke, but then you are open to the claws. You can keep moving side to side to avoid the claws, but then the stomp will knock you down. You can jump up to avoid the stomp shock wave, but by then you are steadily losing health if you make the smallest mistake, and the bear has like a zillion hit points. We should send this frigging teady bear to Iraq.

I think I'll beat it tonight on single player, but I agree with wumpus that the tethered camera with 2 people makes it near impossible.

Priest is definitely the most effective character in that game. His special attacks can wipe out whole rooms of monsters.

Yeah, my brother was leveling the priest up while I rotated the other three. The most satisfying parts for me were: using the katana, holding down the trigger for the first swipe, hold it down for a beat while more zombies gather round, and then releasing it to finish the move and putting down 2 or 3 zombies (especially with the rear attack); and the defender's revolver (like something out of Escape from New York); and the Matyr's twin pistols.

But, the priest was so good at basically vaporizing a crowd of Zs. He works well with any of the others as an artillary piece.

You bag on me for playing on easy and whine about there not being any cheat codes? I never use cheat codes. So there.

Wuss. Wimp. Sleater-Kinney rocks. As does NOLF2. So there.

Get back to me when you've played some 3 player Hunter: The Reckoning.

I don't know three people, much less three people who play video games. Or have an Xbox. Or have Hunter the Reckoning.

I picked up a used copy in trade for a couple of crappy PS2 games I had laying around. I got it because of the multiplayer (my wife and I played through Dark Alliance and liked it) and was hoping it might be similiarly fun in short doses. Haven't tried it multi yet, but single player is so-so--not bad but pretty challenging, etc.

I still have only one good XBox game. I hope MechAssault is good.

MechAssault looks phenomenal, and the press guys I've talked to that have had a chance to play it think it rocks ass, too.

Rob, I posted my tactics of beating the bear. If you've only got 2 people, always have one running in circles around the room while the other attacks the bear from behind. The bear will switch who he's chasing, so your roles will have to change occasionally. Having Priest is always a plus.

Thanks Tom. Unfortunately, its just me because my brother refuses to play until we get by that thing (and I don't blame him). My rental is through next thursday though, so I think I'll keep trying. The priest is WAY too slow to handle the tb on its own. The sadistic bastard who designed the bear makes it get better and better the more damage it takes by the way. Sicker f*cker.

I played a bit of MechAssault at E3 and loved it. Looks quite fun.
