I'm two days into my EVE Online trial and still working through the tutorial but so far I really want to like it. I love the look and feel of it and enjoy the feeling of vastness. However, I keep hearing that it's not a friendly game for new players. Is this because other players prey on them and make it impossible to get anywhere, or is it simply because of the scope and range of options? I've read through the noob threads here for some ideas starting out, but I really want to get a good idea of what to expect before I start paying for this game.

It's because life can be hard at low levels as you struggle to come to terms with the scope and complexity, and because you have no real idea of what to do.

Stay out of the dangerous areas (i.e. <0.5 security space) and other players won't be an issue.

Eve is fine as long as you stay in high-sec.

Once you get into low-sec and 0.0, it's a whole different game.

Arguably a better one, but it really depends on the player.

Scamming is seen as a legitimate profession in EVE, unless the scam involves timecards or characters you'll never get your shit back. Don't buy from direct player trades or use contracts before you understand the system and you should be insulated from most of it.

Also .5+ space is "safer". You can still be ganked but the ganker will lose their ship. So if you're hauling around 50mil+ worth of goods in a ship a couple of cruisers can alpha-strike then you're asking for trouble. Suicide ganking can be wildly profitable so it's not uncommon.

Yeah, there's a ton of stuff in EVE so it can be a bit overwhelming. Drop me a line ingame(same name as here) if you need a little cash to get started. I just stumbled across a 130m+ implant earlier this week and don't mind helping someone else get started :).

Come hang out in the QT3 channel (#QT3), hardly anyone is in there and more people would be nice.

130m? Nice work! I'm busy trading my way to the 2b mark. I'm at about 1.5 right now just buying and selling, buying and selling, and turning over Mechanical Engineering Datacore (4 agents = 4 a day = 16m a day or so).

I like cash!

This is true. Calistas provided seed money for my guy. :)

Thanks again.

Yeah, I was pretty stoked. I know it's not a whole ton of money but for someone who just started little over a month ago it makes things much easier. Was able to buy a nice battlecruiser and fit it out pretty well. I'm working my way towards covert ops stuff right now. Some of those recon ships look might tasty :).

As well, I am willing to help people out. Evemail Takayoru and I'll do what I can. I'm a Caldari presently in the Perimeter system. But I don't know how long I'll be situated there. I recently joined a player corporation and will probably be moving my stuff to 0.0 in a week or so.

Ok, what kind of ship should I shoot for as my first upgrade? The battlecruisers are a bit out of my price range as far as I can tell.

What race are you? Each race has its own ships. Regardless, you'll want a frigate of some kind for now. The starter frigates are complete crap; the others actually have uses.

Look over the frigate stats. There should be one that has a larger cargo hold, making it good for mining and hauling. (Some people argue that a mining bonus is more important in a mining frigate than larger cargo space, but this is only true if you can fly an Industrial for viable jetcanning. Otherwise, you'll be one-tripping and cargo space will have a far greater impact on your aggregate turnaround time than mining speed, even if you're only mining with a single Mining Laser I.) There should be one that's cheap and fast, making it good for courier missions. And there should be a top-of-the-line one that's more expensive but has more power, more CPU, more shields and armor, and more slots. That's the combat model.

Don't keep Civilian gear if you don't need it or can replace it with better. A Civilian ___ never compares favorably to a ___ I.

The soonest I would consider something past a Frigate is your third ship, which might be a Destroyer (which will give you the edge in early missions, because Destroyers kill Frigates dead) or an Industrial (which will open up a lot of mining and hauling possibilities).

Edit: You know, I am not entirely happy with the way computer games have adopted the term "race."

For some reason, I'm very excited about this game. I just bought a Minmatar Rifter and plan on equipping it tomorrow.

Thanks to Calistas and Dravalen for funding my first non-suck ship.

If you are flying a rifter have a look at this thread:

http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=344450

It's a pretty good rifter setup for use in the early missions.

Some tips if you are a mission runner:
Agents work for a cooperation and are divided into certain division, each division gives out a certain percentage of kill, courier or trade missions.

Here: http://eveinfo.com/npcdivisions/ you can look up what division to pick for what missions.
Agent finder: http://www.eve-agents.com/ to find the "right agent"

You gain standing if you run missions, the higher your standing the higher the quality of the agent you get access to and till you get to the next agent level. A low quality high level agent beats (in terms of standing gain and isk payout) a low level high quality agent.

Also the lower the security level of the system the agent is in the better is the standing gain and payout, be carefull in low sec (< 0.5) systems, pirates tend to prey on mission runners.

AFAIK popular corporations are republic fleet and brutor tribe in matar space.
I've been working for brutor tribe a lot as in Rens - Brutor Tribe Treasury there are two agents in one station so I could goof of doing two at once per turn.

Also salvage your wrecks!
Some items you salvage sell for up to 200k. I've been running missions for republic fleet in gelfiven and had two level 1 missions, that made me 2mil in salvaged materials. This agent (Oldit Sandadden / Internal Security Required standing: 0,75 ) tends to give out mission in the nearby low sec as well though.

A good ship to salvage is a destroyer (Thrasher for matari) with two or three tractor beams and several salvagers to speed it up (you can put several of them on one wreck).

Always insure platinum, it's worth it.

And to get easier around: 2D Maps of Eve http://www.ombeve.co.uk/

Man, you guys are really making me want to get back into this game. I played it all the way from early beta to launch and then quit over some now-forgotten dispute with my corp boss (I was V.P.). I'll bet his corp is one of the bigger ones in the game right now, as we were pretty big even back then.

My view of MMOG's is, you either have narrative-driven games or you have EVE. My vote for narrative-driven MMOG's goes to LOTRO. My vote for free-form MMOG's goes (easily) to EVE.

In addition to the Qt3 tips for newbies thread, which is excellent, you can find much of the fabled goonfleet wiki online, without actually joining the goonfleet. It's been posted by a goon splinter group, with permission, here. (http://greatergoon.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page)

I particularly recommend the recommended skill training guide (http://greatergoon.net/wiki/index.php?title=Recommended_Skill_Training_Guide) for someone just starting out.

They didn't this morning, and I'm not a member of any goon-affiliated fleets.

I'm glad I'd already absorbed and printed the good stuff. Somebody got wise to us.

The Mechanical Engineering datacore grind is great, but I don't think the datacores can stay so high for long. Eventually people will figure out that they're much more valuable than the other cores and the market will be deluged.

I hang out in this area (got a research POS in Gulfonodi, run L4 missions off an agent in Gelfiven). There's Republic Fleet agents spanning the whole range in that small area- you can easily go from L1 missions up through L4's without having to pick up & move your base of operations very often at all.

Can you play Eve as a semi-single player game? How much time do you have to put in per login to get something out of the game? Can you play in 1/2 hour to hour batches, or do you have to play for a long strech to really do anything at all interesting?

I don't have the time to play any games that require huge inputs of time, but Eve sounds like it would be incredibly fun to play, and a nice little time sink when I didn't have any interesting single player games to play.

Single missions will take from ten minutes to two hours, depending on level and which mission it is. Your skills train while you are offline, so you can conceivably do nothing but log in to switch skills for six months, then suddenly be uber (though you'll still need to make money).

If you do PvP, time requirements will depend on how long you want to play, and how long you are willing to hunt and peck for targets.

"End game" PvP, large scale alliance v alliance warfare, is largely run on Euro time.

One of the things I like about it is I can log in and play for however long I feel like and generally make progress. Some days I just hoe on for 15 mins to change skill traning while other days I'll go mine/rat/pvpv for a few hours and have a good time. YMMV however.

Trading is great for those periods where you only have a few minutes, as it doesn't take much time at all to alter buy/sell orders and keep them competative.

ME DCs will eventually drop from around 4m to around 1m I'm guessing. That's fine, when they do that I have a mate who is inventing all the time and I'll start funnelling DCs to him. I would be now, but the hit chance on inventing is spotty, and I can use the cash I earn to make more cash on the market, so inventing doesn't make sense for now (and I'm lazy).
