Um, yeah, my "kid" got Pokemon Diamond this morning and wants to share friend codes. I'll try to maintain the list in case other people's "kids" want to trade and battle.

Your code has too many numbers. The center set should only be 4 digits.

It's almost bafflingly simple. It's so simple I couldn't figure it out; for a good 10 minutes I ran around searching every corner of the PokeCenter looking for the elusive "Pal Pad" until I realized it was an item in my inventory.

Heh, I guess I have to get to the third town or whatever to find out my friend code and actually use the WiFi or something. I guess that's to make sure you have enough Pokemon to actually do something or whatever.

If you've never played a Pokémon game before, you really should. It's the RPG distilled to its simplest and most elemental parts, but there is a vast amount of depth hidden under that simple shell.
It's so easy to see why kids love these games too. It lets you travel the world as a kid and uncover all sorts of neat stuff that's a lot like exploring the neighborhood you live in, only with all these really cool pocket monsters along for the ride!
Here's something I wrote for GamerDad that I think is still relevant regarding Pokémon. Apparently something screwed up the é character in the article, but it's still readable. http://www.gamerdad.com/detail.cfm?itemID=573

I only had a briefly played I believe Pokemon Yellow back in the day. Lately I have been getting the itch to try the new DS versions, and since my wife expressed an interest, I picked up both Diamond and Pearl the other day.
It is remarkable in it's simplicity. It's kept the same fundamental design and expanded on it greatly yet still retain a very simple, easy to understand/difficult to master mechanic.
When I get home from work I'll upload my friend code after I figure out how to get my DS online

The last Pokémon game I played was back on the GBpocket the one with the fire pokémon on it, think it was back when they were named by colors red. Finally got to playing Pearl and wow now I remember why I drained so many batteries playing that first one. It seems that they have expanded the elemental system a little more then Fire>Grass>Water>Fire this game will prolly keep me going for a while trying different teams or maybe a team of 6 of the same with different attacks who knows it's still way to early to tell with only 10 hours logged in.
Oh as for the explorer kit, underground area, Hello time waster.

There really is an insane amount of depth in these games to reward true min-maxers, though. Each pokemon has a randomly determined spread of potential statistics, and each stat's development is affected differently by what kind of pokemon they battle, as they level up. If you, for example, fought fifty of the highest rank strength-IV (their term for those potential statistics), you'd have maximized the strength growth potential of your pokemon, and would be assured it had the maximum possible attack (based on its genetic potential) when it gets all grown up. I'm grossly oversimplifying, but figuring out and tweaking these things appeals to the same instinct that made me love spending hours to fuse the perfect immune-to-everything demons in SMT:Nocturne. It's incredible how much depth there is, hidden beneath the candy coated exterior.
Vincent_GC

The more I read about the series as a whole, the more I am amazed at how in depth it goes.
For example, there are 17 different types of pokemon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_types) (with a handy dandy spreadsheet in the middle of the page) spread 493 different species, each with inherant strengths and weaknesses. To add to that, many, many pokemon (I guesstimate at least 60%) are a hybrid of 2 types. That's a ton on pokemon and lots of combos, though I think some of them are not possible at this point (I don't see any ghost/steel Pokemon for example). Also add that some pokemon, while weak to a specific class statisticly, might have an ability that makes it immune. For example, there are some pokemon that are weak versus Ground attacks, but have the Levitate ability or are a flying hybrid, which makes them immune.
And that's just one broad paintbrush over just one aspect of the series.

I understand that Dave will forget this post ever happened the next time he needs to play the "OMGLOL Stalker!" card to escape a corner, and while he's a little bit over-excited in the second paragraph, he's right.
If you've never played, you should. If only because it's one of the icons/titans in the genre. Pick your favorite genre, identify one of the 800 lb. gorillas in it, and then think about someone asking you "I've never played that, but I'm think about it. Should I?" The answer is "of course."
What makes this franchise great is how there's a stupid amount of depth under the rock < paper < scissors surface (starting with the triangle is more like 15 verticies), but that depth matters exactly as much as you want it to.
Kids love it because you can pretty easily gather a group of 6-10 pokemon and "finish" the game. They don't know that if you keep catching and releasing Shinx until you get one with the right base stats and nature and then only fight it against certain other pokemon you'll get the best possible result. They don't care.
Stat min/max nerds love it because pouring hours of time and effort has an identifiable result. Moreso now with the WiFi and global trading and battling.
People in between (and I feel like I'm pretty much in the middle. I'm crazy enough to try and collect them all, but not so crazy to catch 20 Geodudes to keep the most perfect of the bunch) can find their inflection point on the line between "play and finish" and "squeeze every last drop of gameplay from the cart" and still enjoy the game without feeling like they're missing out.
A poor analogy/comparison is WoW/Raiding. I do feel like I miss out on stuff because I'm not "hardcore" enough to raid. I don't feel like I'm missing out because I'm not "hardcore" enough to raise the most perfect lvl 100 Turtwig the world has ever seen.
So if you own a DS, and have $35, you almost certainly won't regret buying the game.
That said, it (the series of games in general) is not without flaw. Personally, I feel like there's a grindy nature at times. That might be just me and my desire to both catch a lot of pokemon AND keep them balanced in level, as opposed to catching a lot of pokemon and choosing a group of ~10 to level up, and leave the rest, but it's there.
I'm not a huge fan of "real time" stuff. I get that it's neat and it adds something to games, but it's already hard enough to catch (made up example) an Abra, I don't want to have to make sure I'm playing between 9pm and 9am on top of it. Also, being 34 and working, most of my play time comes in a certain window (hint: not daytime).
I was never a big fan of the forced interaction/trading. Having only 140 of 150 pokemon available in Red or Blue (or Gold/Silver, or Ruby/Sapphire or Fire Red/Leaf Green) has always rubbed me wrong. Again, I get the motivation, but I'm a pretty solitary gamer so that plus my OCDish nature frustrated. Especially since you'd usually see a 3rd game in each generation "combine" the two (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald I think) eventually. So you could either wait for that or "suffer".
This is much less of a problem in Pearl/Diamond. With the ability to pull in pokemon from GBA games AND the Wi-Fi global trading, it's MUCH easier to get the "unavailble" pokemon, either from the "auction house" or directly from 'friends' who might be anywhere.
The story is pretty much identical in each iteration, even beyond the formulaic nature of RPG tpye games. Fire Red/Leaf Green basically lifted the original Red/Blue story verbatim and put it on the current game system (meaning it added berries and breeding and such) if I remember right.
None of that is enough to warrant taking a pass. Much of it doesn't even apply to you, since you haven't played the earlier games, you won't notice the same story or the potentially hard to trade nature of completing a collection.
So buy the game.

Oh, and if you have a Wii, a new pokemon game will be released that is, from what I am reading, an upgrade from Pokemon Colosseum. It will connect wirelessly to the DS and can import your pokemon for battles. It's called Pokemon Battle Revolution and should be released on june 25thish for America (japan has thiers already)

Yes, but I believe you have to see all the Pokemon in Diamond before you can import from the GBA games. In order to see all the Pokemon, I believe you have to get all 8 badges and beat the final four.

He can import them all, but not until he's seen (don't have to capture) all 150 pokemon in Sinnoh's pokedex. It's not hard as long as you fight most of the trainers you come across, but you won't see some of them until the end of the game.
At that point, you can transfer 6 pokemon a day through the Pal Park, and they keep their levels and moves and any items they're holding, though I don't think they're allowed to have any HM moves on them.

You will know you can import them to pal park when you go back to the pokemon professer at your starting town. If you have all 150 pokemon sighted, Professer oak will rush in, give you a national pokedex, and run off.
then your all set
Some interesting online stats (http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/DS/Nintendo+Wi%2DFi+Connection/news.asp?c=2995), once again showing that online modes don't seem to fly overly well with Japanese gamers:
Sure enough, compared to figures from three weeks ago, which saw activity peaking at around 300,000 users, the Pokémon boost has already driven it over the 800,000 mark.
What's most interesting is the sheer enthusiasm of American and Canadian players to go online compared to their Japanese equivalents.
So far, over five millions copies of Pokémons Diamond and Pearl have been sold in Japan. But before the US launch, only around 64,000 (Japanese) players ever went online (still enough to make the games the third and fifth most popular on the service).
In contrast, the addition of one million US and Canadians players has boosted the total of online Pokémon masters to 430,000, suggesting that around a third of US players have taken their game online, and making the games by far and away the most popular on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Your one-stop shop for every fiddly little obsessive detail about Pokemon. It's where I learned how to min-max like a champ. It's also got a very robust pokedex for each game, showing every move a pokemon can learn, how they evolve, what they need to evolve, and where you can get them. Great site, if a little slow right now with the post d/p rush.

Har, my eight-year-old son has Pearl. I preordered the pair and offered him his choice, so I have Diamond. His Empoleon is already at a frighteningly high level, but I think his back bench suffers as a result. I try to assemble a balanced team and bring them all along at the same speed. (Also, I don't play two hours a day.) That's why my starter is still a Turtwig. :P

When you go to capture your migrated pokemon in the park, you use special park balls (free) that don't miss. The only "challenge" is that you have to go to the right part of the park for the pokemon you released, e.g., you have to surf on the water to capture water pokemon.
So, who here has pearl? I'd like to get my hands on some of the pearl-only pokemon, and I can trade any starter in exchange.
I've got Pearl, what're you looking for? The exclusives I can breed so far are: Misdreavus, Houndour, and Shieldon. I've also got my hands on the original charmander/squirtle/bulbasaur starters and the Ruby/Sapphire starters if anyone wants any. Feel free to ask for whatever you want, but if it's a big wishlist it might take me a bit longer to breed them until I find that item that makes eggs hatch faster.
I don't need anything in return, but I'd appreciate any trade/tradebacks down the line for the Nintendo event pokemon from the GBA games if anyone has any. I haven't played one of these since the Gameboy Color, so trade/tradebacks are my only way of getting that info.

Misdreavus and houndour would be awesome. Houndoom is one of my favorite pokemon, and it was hard as hell deciding not to take the version with him in it. As soon as I beat the game, I'd be happy to trade you some of my mews and celibis - I've got multiples of them on my GBA carts, assuming the game allows me to trade them. I think the only super rares I don't have multiples of are the ruby/sapphire ones.

One anorith, a few metagross, two rayquaza, one suicune, two deoxys, three latias, one tyranitar, several bedum, a shiny skarmory, a shiny spoink (though who cares about spoinks), three bagons, several eevees, if you happen to be looking for any of their evolutions, several snorlax (my favorite pokemon), looks like only one celebi, one jirachi, two kyogre, one articuno, one groudon, one regice, one regirock, one registeel, one lugia, one mew.
This is so odd. I was sure I had several mew and/or mewtwo hanging around. Maybe I transferred them into colliseum? Hrm. Maybe I missed one, in all the different boxes. Oy, forgot to check daycare, too.

If you walk a few feet outside your house, especially if you live in an urban area, I bet you'd be surprised just how many unsecured wi-fi access points you can find. And while it's no warchalking, the DS makes it pretty easy to find and use them.

On the topic of pokemans, do any of you pearl-users have some decently natured Sheildons you'd be willing to trade for a Cranidon? (By decently natured, I'm thinking relaxed, impish, any nature that boosts its def without compromising atk. You can find more info on natures here - http://serebii.net/games/natures.shtml)
I've got some armor fossils to turn in but I'm at the city where i could get the fly badge so once I've got it I'll swing back.
only 2 so far have been quite and bold will try to breed is there a way to influence what nature it will have or just random luck?

If you have a female with the nature you want, if you have her hold an Everstone while she's doing the nasty she'll have a 50/50 chance of passing on her nature to the baby.

6 now all males not a single female in the buch of them yet. This is from fossils not from breeding. I've got one in the day care ( thats the right place right? ) and if I use a female that isn't a sheildon but is of the relaxed nature would that still work? I'll keep digging for more but it may be easier for me to go catch a compatable female rather then keep this up. I have amassed quite a pile of heart scales and other stones/shards.

It would work for passing on the nature with an everstone, but the egg would be the species of the female.

That's a lot of digging! Just wait till you have a Ditto.
If you're really eager to get into breeding, I can do a trade/tradeback with my Ditto so you can get the info and be able to search for one on the GTS. I wish I could just give you one, but it's not possible to make Ditto eggs, and he/she is a time consuming pain to capture.
If you're antsy to go crazy-go-nuts with breeding, as long as I can get my Magcargo to breed, I could also send you a Slugma who halves the time it takes for eggs to hatch.

If you save right before giving the museum guy the fossil, you can reset if you don't like the nature and stat spread you get from the regenerated pokemon. It's different every time, totally random. That's how I got acceptable cranidos natures.

Quatoria, did you (or anyone else) have FireRed? I'm looking through the list to see which pokemon I'll have to do direct trades for in order to "catch'em all" and it looks like there are some that can only be found on FireRed, or with FireRed inserted. Hmm, I guess they'll probably also have some that are exclusive to Ruby/Sapphire. They certainly don't make this easy!

I have every GBA pokemon game but sapphire. And I'd be happy to catch the fire-red exculsives and trade them amongst the QT3 populace - only catch is, you have to beat the elite 4 and access the national pokedex before you can catch the GBA-cardtridge pokemon. Oh, and I found another Mew, so it looks like I do have one for trade.

I'm clueless about the GBA generation legendaries. I bought Emerald and LeafGreen when I picked up Pearl, so at least some of them I'll be able to get on my own.
Help me understand if I have this right:
Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres - Can I capture all three of these in LeafGreen, or do I just get one?
Chikorita/Cynquadil/Totodile - I get to choose one, and only one of these in Emerald?
Raikou/Entei/Suicune - All three in Emerald?
Reirock/ice/steel - All three in Emerald?
And are all of these event-only pokemon: Mew, Lugia, Ho-oh, Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys
How complete is your collection? I got my hands on a Celebi if you need a trade/tradeback for info.

Is it possible to trade pokemon from a red/blue from the old gameboy color to an gameboy advance version of pokemon ?
Is it in another turn possible to trade from a gameboy advanced to the new pearl and diamond edition ?
Looking back I had good time playing the blue version and Im thinking about getting the diamond/perl for the DS but it's not out in germany yet and I would like to get some of my old pokemon back.

The Gameboy Color games have no way to connect to the GBA or the DS, so they're stuck on their own.
You can bring GBA pokemon to the DS, but not until you beat the main storyline on the DS.

I shoulda read this before stating up pokémon this morning 11* turned in and one was a female so she getting busy in the day care. If I save before an egg hatches will that work too? Meaning each hatch could be a different nature as neither of the parents is holding a stone. I'm also looking for an oval stone to evolve a happenie (sp) to chansey I've got shards scales and other stones in all the digging that took place.
*That's 11 total not in one sitting.

My kid is playing Diamond and Leaf Green. I might just give it a whirl myself when I replace her DS with a DS Lite (Gold) this xmas.

Poor luck with Pokemon over the holidays. The kid loves her new gold DS and Zelda of course, but her old DS broke one day after I purchased a second Pokemon game so we could play together. Not wanting to invest in a whole new DS Lite so soon, I bought Battle Revolution on a whim and discovered that it is totally useless unless you happen to have a bunch of buddies with network-capable Wii's and the game.
Edit: Whoops, my bad, it seems. The manual is horrible stuff to slog through and it was only when I just started fooling around in the game itself when I discovered the DS Battle Mode at last. I think this is exactly what I was hoping for, as opposed to internet-only modes which was what it was starting to look like. For the documentation alone, this game is on notice for the time being.
Anyone else try it out yet?
Isn't Battle Revolution for the Wii?

Isn't Battle Revolution for the Wii?
Yes, and its "DS Battle Mode" allows you to control the Wii battles with your DS using the LAN. I think you can win Pokemon via achievements and codes and download them and other things to the DS as well.

How do I get my hands legally on a Mew or Mewtu in Diamond or Pearl (or any other legendary pokemon I have not listed in my pokedex)?
To trade them I have to have "seen" them once, but since I haven't I can't try to trade one.
And what's going on with this "cloning" issue - upload your Pokemon for a trade offer and try to disrupt the connection before the trade with the GTS is completed - so the local copy isn't deleted but the pokemon is already uploaded?
If that works, shouldn't be somebody flooding the "market" legendary pokemon?
I've also read on a very special way to obtain a Mew in red and blue, does that still work for leafgreen or fireread?
And regarding pokemon battle revolution, I've done the pokemon battle revolution quest where you can get one pokemon on their pokemon battle revolution page. Are there more of these quizes out already to get more pokemon?
You have to have access to the National Pokedex and go to Pal Park to be able to find Mew and Mewtwo, I think.

Wise fwom de gwave!
I recently picked up for (sort of) free a DSi and Pokemon Platinum. My first foray into actually playing a pokemon game my own self. Does anyone around here still fart around with Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/whatever? I've been fiddling with it on and off for about a week, have two gym badges so far.

I hadn't played since Fire Red but I needed something to spend my Best Buy gift card on so I picked up Platinum. Most of my dudes are around level 40 and I'm up to 6 badges I think. Can't wait to unlock the GBA trade so I can bring over all of my old guys.
Friend code is 4554 8712 9328
Also, if you haven't touched your copy of Platinum in months there is currently a wi-fi event going on that allows you to get Darkrai (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/491.shtml). You need to have finished the main story in Platinum (I don't think it works with Diamond/Pearl but I haven't tried yet). Then you can unlock the Mystery Gift option on the main menu (http://www.serebii.net/platinum/mysterygift.shtml). The next time you go into a Pokemon Center you'll get a Member's Card. Then you go to Canalave City, enter the previously locked inn, take a nap and you'll wake up on a new island where you'll find Darkrai. The event ends on 9/13.

I have been playing Platinum lately, and it's a lot of fun. Been breeding a ton of monsters when I get bored of filling in my Pokedex, so if anyone needs anything non-legendary, ask in this thread or send a PM and I'm sure I have it amongst one of the carts I have. Worst case scenario I have to import some monsters from FR/LG/R/S/E through Pal Park, no big deal.

I've been playing on and off myself (friend code posted upthread). Three badges, pokemon I use the most mid-20s.
Mike, you don't have to finish the storyline to get Mystery Gift stuff. I just nabbed the card for Darkrai access. And noticed I missed the chance at the key for Rotom's other forms and special Regigigas. Guess I need to check the website more often...
