I assume there will be multiple releases of the DVD (cinematic release, added footage release, double dragon sumo release, etc), but what is the scuttlebutt on how much will be added to the later releases?
I only got to see it once in the theater and am a bit giddy about seeing it again on DVD.

Rumors say an additional 40 minutes of footage. Big pieces are more Ent coverage.

If you're a big fan, wait until November. I'm still amazed at how compelling Jackson made those documentaries in the bigger Fellowship package. Rent the August one if you really need a fix.

Andrew, what's in Nov? Forgive me I haven't been following all the different releases that closely. I purchased Fellowship DVD in December and got so much bonus material I still haven't waded through it all. Are you saying there are releases sans all the goodies?

Yeah, they did this last year, too. The first issue, in August, is a DVD set that has the movie and maybe an extra or two (didn't buy it so I'm not sure). Then in November they release the four or five DVD set that has all of the crazy extras and commentary tracks.

I'll probably do what I did last year. Buy the cinematic release when it comes out and then give it to my Mom when the expaned release comes out.

Last year it was actually different extras on the DVDs, to encourage people to buy both. You get the "theatrical" in August with one set of extras, plus a sneak peek at the sequel and a sneak peek at the extra footage that will be on the special edition. Then the SE comes out in November, with all different (and more) extras, plus a different look at the sequel. I think they're doing basically the same thing with TTT.
As for what's added to the SE film, it's supposed to be 30-45 minutes of extra footage, focusing mostly on more character interaction and more stuff with the Ents. Also, Huorns are added to the Helm's Deep battle (w00t!).
I'm psyched--one of my critiques of TTT (which I loved) was that it was too action-packed, not enough development/interaction with the characters.

This would fix (or at least downplay) one of the movie's major plot holes, so I'm all in favor of that. More character development would be highly welcome, too. I'll always hate the exorcism of Theoden scene, and what they did to Faramir, but changes like these could very well bring the movie closer to being on par with Fellowship (though I'll likely still like Fellowship better, unless they make some major changes).
I'm looking forward to it. Jackson did a great job with the extended Fellowship release, turning an already great movie into an even better one.

What they did to Faramir was unforgivable, and a major downfall of the second film. Huorns/more character development/etc would help, but nothing can fix the ruination of one of Tolkein's noblest characters...

Has there been any actual confirmation of extra editions this time? Or are you just making logical extrapolations based on what they did with the first film?
I actually didn't make it to the theater for this one, sigh... New baby. But I figure this way I can watch TTT on DVD then only have a short wait before seeing RotK at the theater...

Wow, glad to hear I'm not the only one who thought what happened to Faramir was a travesty. I'm not much of a fan of the books, and I think the first movie is infinitely better than the first book, but the second movie needlessly ruined many of the cool things about the second book.
