I just flipped Monkey Island after finally figuring out the whole head of the navigator puzzle! Ha! What an excellent, excellent game! I can see why its gone down as a classic. The ending was absolutely, snort-out-your-soda hilarious! I was laughing during nearly all of it, talk about unexpected. I especially like the line that was like, "You know, LeChuck was a nasty, mean, awful, low-down, good-for-nothing, but you know what? He sure dies pretty!" while they were watching the fireworks.
Anyway, the thing I enjoyed most about the game was learning how to swordfight, I hope that's in the next games, 'cause I really liked it! :D Insult swordfighting is the best. Why can't we have that be derivatively knocked off? Why is it always the most mundane stuff that gets copied? Huh, huh?
I especially like how the puzzles didn't make "sense" persay in a logical, rational way, but could be figured out based on the game's internal logic and world. Since games don't have follow any sensible rules but the ones they are based on, I always enjoy games that take advantage of that. Also, the dialogue is too priceless, I think want to play through at least once more just to see what the reactions are to different choices. I wonder if you can threaten the head of the navigator to get it that way (I was intrigued with the super-bizarre "pretty please" "pretty please with sugar on top" where on earth did THAT come from? Sugar on top?!) Also, because I'm wondering if you can win against LeChuck at the church if you're faster, or if it keeps going if you don't spray the root-beer from the machine at him. (Instant Replay! Blimp Cam! He, he, he!)
On to Monkey Island 2! (And more Ultima VII)

Monkey Island has been my favorite game since I originally played it when it was released. All of the sequels have been pretty keen as well.
Best MI moment: Get manual on style, use manual on style in shredder, give stylish confetti to heavily armed clown. WHEEE!

The flat out best thing about Monkey Island is that it never had a "lose state".
No matter where you were you could always reach the end of the game.
Brilliant.
I can't remember if it was in the first or second game, but there's actually a moment where Guybrush falls off a cliff, and the game pretends to end, then he bounces back up off a convenient rubber true. Basically a big fat middle finger to the Sierra adventures.

I still need to dig into Curse of Monkey Island. I enjoyed Escape From quite a bit, despite some issues... but I totally missed Curse. The first two are among my favorite games ever.

There was one way to mess up. When you are on the ship, you can put a valuable item into the ship's furnace.
I forgot what item that was though.

Have you not heard this before? The stereotype is a little girl asking her parents to let her ride the pony. Sort of the same thinking that produced "Called it, locked it, and flushed the key down the toilet. No plumbers, no plumber's assistants...", ad infinitum. Ah to be six again.
Actually, it'd be interesting to know when/how 'pretty please' arose.

Holy shit! What an ending! What the hell happened, you take off his mask, the guy comes in, it can't have all been a dream or something...I've already played the very first part of Curse of Monkey Island so I know it doesn't pick up right where it left off! Does it ever explain what happened in the next two games? Man, I'm so confused. If it wasn't real, then why did it switch to Governor Marley, did he use some sort of spell?
TELL ME! I NEED TO KNOW! :?
The whole creepy brother was pretty damn hilarious though! :D
In other news, no I didn't know that, so "pretty please" is like some sort of joke everyone knows? Heh, and I thought it was original, I wonder if I've attributed something like that before without knowing it!

Do yourself a favour and forget that you ever saw the ending to MI2. Trying to make sense of it only makes your head hurt.

It's not a joke. It's simply a children's saying that's used when "please" alone doesn't get you what you want. Adding "pretty" and "with sugar on top" is intended as an incentive to sweeten the deal (no pun intended). It usually goes something like this:
Child: Please?
Adult: No.
Child: Pretty please?
Adult: No.
Child: Pretty please, with sugar on top?
Adult: No.
At least, that's the way it played out at my house.

The flat out best thing about Monkey Island is that it never had a "lose state".
This is a very, very underused concept in games. It should be prevalent for story based games. Planescape: Torment had a very nice approach to this, with a couple of "Can't Miss This Coming" exceptions.

Actually, there is exactly one way to die in the original Secret of Monkey Island game, but you have to try pretty hard to find it. I didn't find it until after playing CoMI and seeing the in-joke about it.

Me too. The first Monkey Island is my favourite. Kickass Carribean tunes and insult sword fighting, what more can you ask for?.
