We monitor all of our servers for possible security or user issues. When we see something odd, we notify our users. We had noticed an Australian address trying to guess passwords on accounts, then we get an email from an Australian demanding we remove a site we host. Noticed the two ips were the same - mailed them to let them know we had already contacted their isp and would continue to pursue the matters with the legal authorities if it did not stop.

Kid emails back that it wasn't him.

Then sends me this email. OOf.

Dear Sir,

I know I wrote you an email earlier today… but that was when I was scared. That is why I didn’t tell you the truth and said that I do not have access to the Internet on my home computer. I wish to make amends for my deception by telling you now exactly what happened.

Despite the fact that one of your clients and I have had clashes in the past, I would like to explain that I had no intention of hacking the ##REMOVED## server. I have given up arguing over the copyright issue. As I said earlier, I was wrong in my misunderstanding of certain copyright laws.

This is what happened:

A few weeks ago I downloaded two password crackers (Brutus and Hobo) off the Internet with the intention of setting them on my own email accounts. What I was aiming to do was to check the security of my own accounts. Since downloading these crackers, I have thought that they were going to work on my accounts and knowing that doing anything else on the computer may slow them down I left the room whenever they were running. When I got your email today, I realized that maybe it actually was my crackers that were attempting to get into your server. When I got home from school today, I did not log onto the Internet but went straight to the crackers that I had been using. I checked Brutus and found nothing that could have affected your serve! r. However, when I checked Hobo, I found that instead of working on my Hotmail account, it went directly to www.##REMOVED##.com.

Shown below is a screenshot of what Hobo looked like when I started to use it. (If not visible, please see attached file.)
##REMOVED##

This is a screenshot showing what Hobo actually did. (If not visible, please see attached file.)
##REMOVED##

As I stated earlier, I left the computer running after I started Hobo. I did not try to hack into the ##REMOVED## server. I’m not sure how it happened. I was stunned to find out that you were right and that my computer was attempting to get into your server. I have now removed all crackers and related files from my hard drive.

I am sorry for the difficulty that this has caused you. My father reamed me good because I was using his IP address. It will not happen again.

I hope that this satisfies you. If not, please feel free to contact my father

##REST REMOVED##

He meant to hack his own hotmail account?

Chet

I suppose it never did occur to you that maybe, just maybe, he might just be telling the truth? His email and the evidence he presented seems to indicate as such - especially given the fact that screaming for attorneys online is usually the same as a vegetation threating to chew on the ass of a porker. Its laughable.

Weird. Can't we just ban kids from using the Internet ?

And online gaming servers for that matter. I love playing SOFII but it really pains me to have to read all that kiddie bullshit chat messages during my online gaming sessions.

You sure they're all kids?

I'm only being partly flippant. I've seen 40+ year old guys who are perfectly reasonable in person turn into flaming jerks when playing online -- and sometimes, the 16 year olds are more mature.

As ever,

My thoughts exactly. He could just have ignored Chet's threats or worse, tell him to piss off. He didn't have to waste time on that email. And to me, thats a strong case that he could be telling the truth.

Well so much for innocent until proven guilty, benefit of the doubt and all those other sane premises then.

So lemme get this straight...this kid installed an ESP hack program that read his mind and targeted his arch enemy, but the kid had nothing to do with it because he just wanted to hack Microsoft?

Got it.

He's had his day in open forum, and been found guilty.

Which part of "all good in the end" did you all miss? Did I say anything about punushing the kid or anything? No - it was my opinion based on what he said and what I read as implied. And yes I would like to buy the ESP based hacking software that just knows I have an issue with someone so it just starts tearing into just that one site when it goes on its mad rampage across the internet....jesus for smart people you guys can be really silly at times.

Isn't benefit of the doubt what you've based your "career" on?

dude! that's like, so pre-internet. nowadays, guilty persons get to sort spam from the real messages from a combined aol/hotmail account, then they get to moderate soc.politics flamefests.
