Seeing how people would react to each. All racism is not created equally. Ever since I was a kid, walking home from school and hearing my fellow school mates going "ching, chong, chon, ching" and making stupid "Confucius says" jokes, I've always wondered what would happen if someone anonymously (I guess this is where my experiment failed) yelled out "nigger" in a crowded area, or "chink" or "kike". Would the same amount of energy be used to find the perpetrator if it was chink versus nigger that was cried out? What about if it was kike versus nigger? It's not just kids though, I've certainly endured my share of prejudice, I lived in South Africa in the laste 1970's and racism their was inequal because not only did Apartheid exist, racism existed as a caste system with white people on top and black people on the very bottom (it was white, hispanic, east asian, indian/arabs and blacks). I guess, maybe that where my curiosity comes from. I wonder if a "mental caste system" exists here.

Basically Dirt posted three threads under the identical header of "Not for the easily offended". Each thread was a racial slur: one for those of Jewish heritage that rhymes with "bike", one for blacks that rhymes with "jigger" and one for Asians that rhymes with "blink".

In the meta thread that followed, he claimed it was all an "experiment". With folks basically (and correctly) saying "You didn't offend me, I'm just sick of your shit", Dirt concluded that he had, indeed offended folks.

The places are so different. When Britain was bombed some years back, I posted in the thread here about why the entire world was mourning over 15 dead people in Britain. At first, people were up in arms here. Then I mentioned that Iraqis are dying by the 10's everyday and no mourning occurs anywhere except in Iraq. There were some people who were still up in arms, but for the most part, everybody here was reasonable. People started posting studies about chimpanzees and how they mourn over things that they can identify with (or something to that effect). An interesting and spirited conversation came up around my comments. I learned something.

Gone Gold used to be the same way. Everybody used to come down hard on Leith when he first started justifying Palestinian's actions in the Gaza Strip years and years ago. Many people automatically discounted him as a nut, but some people would take him up on what he was saying and a wonderful and spirited conversation come up over it and I think it really opened people's minds about what's going on over there.

OO just isn't that way; maybe in the beginning, but certainly not now. It leaves me sad because GoneGold was so important to me. I was trying to revive, rekindle a spirit that had already died. When I couldn't do it, I guess I got overly obssessed about it. Yeah, overall, it's a good thing I got banned.

The point of the experiment is to study how the group or social order reacts to the words themselves.

In Dirt's case, there was nothing anonymous about it. He posted it all under his own name. With the origin of the pejoratives known, the discussion becomes less about the reaction of the group to the words, and more a discussion of the person throwing the words out.

In other words, in the guise of deeper "meaning", what this actually was was either attention whoring on a grand level, trolling, or both.

Do you actually find meme posts offensive? Do they represent a way of putting down your country/ethinicity?

Chugging through a signal/noise ratio heavy on the noise and having people posting words representative of racial hatred with no context or point to them aren't even remotely comparable.

Also, it is great that racial epithets don't bother you but you have to be aware that the majority of people find them at least distasteful to the point where they just don't need to see them sprayed about in a place that they go to hang out and chat with people. I think they may well make people feel more uncomfortable than having to suffer another painfully bad joke that we all got sick of months ago.
