View Full Version : Game Over for Playstation 3?

Could it be that piracy will be that final straw that breaks the PS3's back? Apparently, hacker groups are claiming they can play ISOs on a PS3 already. Here's the item:

Internet Release groups says PS3 Backups are Playable, Exploit Found

An internet release group known as 'Paradox' have released a game image of Motorstorm (JAP). Where they have a field saying playable in the NFO file, they say 'Yes they are :)'. In the special notes sections, they also denote 'And a question to all, is there a bug in the system software from the playStation 3(R) Yes there is Nothing to add more..'. Could the PS3 be exploited ALREADY? Perhaps.

If its true it took them a lot longer to crack the PSP then it did this.

Piracy was actually one of the factors that really helped selling the original Playstation over here. Same goes for the PS2, at least to a certain extent. The point that you could copy or download games increased the system's appeal.

With Sony losing two hundred bucks each time a console is sold, I'm thinking the last thing they need is a reason for people to buy systems without games.

Realistically, what this probably means in the short term is more firmware patching because, apparently, weekly updates aren't frequent enough to keep the pirates out.

It all comes down to how easy/non-frustrating it is to pirate games on a difficulty scale from Dreamcast (very easy) to Xbox 360 (possible, but difficult and inherently problematic due to Live). Just because they've managed to make a disk image doesn't mean PS3 piracy will thrive. But, yeah, the whole "piracy is good because it helps sell systems" rationalization has no place in the PS3 world where Sony is losing so much per hardware unit sold.

Very true, though the loss won't apply forever, and there are some regions (like the UK, not sure about the rest of the EU) where Sony will be selling the PS3 at a profit. In South America, prices are also very inflated. I have a friend in Brazil who has always pirated all his games (as is the norm there), but who is so loyal to Sony that he's waiting for the PS3.

Great. How many times can you pirate Resistance? The rest of the launch lineup isn't worth the bother IMHO...

Geo

I agree -- if you pirate games nobody wants to play/buy in a forest, does anybody hear it? :)

Quaro
12-30-2006, 08:54 AM
Yeah, no kidding.

Sony's best defense would be to make their online service so cool that playing games without it sucks. You can pirate 360 games, but you can't use Live if you do, and what's the point of Gears of War if you can't coop with your pals?

deepruntramp
12-30-2006, 09:08 AM
Wouldn't this imply that piracy has an effect on games sales? I'm pretty sure that's still up for debate...

Thomas Wilde
12-30-2006, 09:51 AM
I believe the point here is that Sony can't afford to lose much in the way of software sales, especially if this is a firmware hack as opposed to a chip installation.

That said, I don't see how piracy could fail to have an effect on game sales, even if that effect is small.

stusser
12-30-2006, 10:00 AM
Of course it'll have an effect, it just depends how easy it is to do it. The best part about this is that nobody can claim they hacked the console to "install linux" or "run homebrew", which nobody does anyway-- they're all pirates.

Once again we can get into the value of anecdotes, but when you see a timeline like this it doesn't look very good. Sometimes companies overestimate customer loyalty or underestimate how hard it is to maintain that goodwill. You are only as good as your last product no matter what industry you are in.

Looking at the release schedule, Sony should still have a strong 2007 despite their very poor start.

However, as I've mentioned in other topics, I can't see them surpassing the install base of the 360 until mid-2008. That is not good for a company that expected to be nipping at the 360's tail by the middle of 2007. Add Halo 3 into the mix, plus a price drop, and next Christmas may belong to Microsoft.

Can Sony afford to be second or third for two holidays in a row? I'm not sure.

It isn't my place to refute the assertions made by all the linked websites. However the list of links isn't accurate.

Nov. 10th, 2005 - Sony is caught hiding a rootkit inside music CD's that place a virus on users computer.
Calling the rights management software a "virus" is wrong.

Feb. 27th, 2006 - Sony misses it's Spring launch date
Sony changes the Japanese launch date to coincide with the previously announced US launch date in November. They didn't miss anything. They changed it to a "global launch." Later, they actually missed the European launch when they pushed it to 2007.

May 31st, 2006 - Sony's Phil Harrison denies copying the Wiimote and states that the PS3 will replace the PC
He never said the PS3 would replace the PC. That's just false.

October 12th, 2006 - Sony Exec calls the 360 and Wii "too expensive"
The quotes this link provides don't show the exec saying "too expensive" at all. They infer that it's what he must mean then offer words in quotes based on their interpretation.

I hope you see my point. Many of the items on this list are non-issues or non-accurate. The list is designed to paint Sony in a negative light. Though it's easy to do with legitimate gripes, the author tries to go for the jugular by exaggeration and sensationalism. The result is instead a lack of credibility.

It propagates onto any computer into which you insert the disc. That is close enough as far as most people are concerned. It won't make your own computer a new infector, so yeah, it's not exactly a virus, but you are sort of splitting hairs. If they had just said "malware" I don't think the summary of the event would have been significantly different.

You're like Bill Clinton saying that it depends on what the definition of "is" is.

It might have been more accurate, but like I said who cares about accuracy when it comes to bad Sony news. Also, doesn't "malware" represent malicious software. I certainly don't think their intentions were malicious. They wanted to protect intellectual property and went about it in a crappy way. Calling the stuff a virus conjures up images of Sony trying to intentionally damage people's computers.

If you'd like to correct me, by all means. However, my understanding was that the US release was scheduled for November of 2006 all along and the Japanese one was going to happen in the Spring of 06 initially. So if the headline was something like, "Sony missed Japanese launch in March" I'd be fine with it.

It may not have been malicious, but it was certainly incredibly negligent. A major corporation opening people's computers to attack is just stupid beyond belief. But, go ahead and quibble over the usage of "virus".

Why are you being obtuse? The stories on the sites are not the failures. The parsing of those stories into an inaccurate one-line summary is where the problem lies.

For instance, when Phil Harrison is answering a question about consoles connecting to PCs for multimedia functions and says something like, "The Playstation 3 can do many of those things so we don't need a PC for them." And that becomes the headline, "the PS3 will replace the PC" And then that's somehow represented as bad news for Sony.

Right, but he was answering a question as to whether they would integrate the PS Network experience with PCs the way MS is planning to with the Xbox Live. His answer is that since all the things MS is talking about doing from the PC can be done just as easily on the PS3, given it's built in capabilities, there was no point for them to extend the PSN service to the Windows desktop. So if you read the answer in context it does not mean that Phil thinks PCs are obsolete thanks to the PS3.

Actually, the Sony Australia executive did say that the Wii and XBox 360 were too expensive. This had nothing to do with the PS3, which wasn't released in Australia this Christmas; it was a bit of promotion for the PS2. He said that families would buy the cheaper PS2, mostly due to the price of new games in Australia being extortionate, whereas PS2 games are slightly cheaper and have a much larger selection of a much higher quality.

You do realize that just like George Lucas insists that Star Wars be called "science fantasy" that Sony prefers the PS2 and PS3 be called "computer entertainment systems" and not consoles or gaming consoles or what have you. Also, they have tried to have them used as PCs for years by having a version of Linux available. Hell, I remember back when the PS2 hadn't been out too long all the "convergence" debates we had here because Sony was talking about using it to surf the web, check email, send pictures and movies back and forth. I mean if those aren't PC tasks what are?

Even so, past Yenta Updates have tended to let us know that before anyone is banned, there's at least a PM asking to tone it down. K0NY would have had to respond to a warning the wrong way (and quickly) to get banned that speedily.

You've got to admit that K0NY really does ask for it. I don't know how many times I've seen him misrepresent facts, selectively quote executives from online Q&A articles to make Sony look good or its competitors look bad and various other things that I typically expect from Gamespot's System Wars forum.

He is also far too emotionally invested in this whole console war thing. Anytime you call someone names on a messageboard, you're in trouble as far as I'm concerned.

No. I said Kony's a dick. I think you guys are all assholes! At least you're actually funny. Some just think they are.

Think on this.

Brad, I've noticed you're often out there, defending Sony and the PS3 on a daily basis, and yet nobody seems to attack you as a shill, viral marketer, marketeer, or a fanboy. K0NY, in his infinite dickdom, was a constant target. Why? Because you're reasonable, honest, articulate, don't resort to swearing or manipulation of the truth, don't send really nice people PMs insulting their mothers (that I'm aware of), and took the time to become a member of the community before jumping into every PS3 thread with guns blazing.

You're the K0NY done right. As for me, I'm singing "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" and celebrating a great start to 2007 as far as Qt3 is concerned. A long overdue housecleaning, K0NY was never much part of the true community here, from day one. And it's not because we're a closed and insular bunch. Many new people have arrived since K0NY and are very much part of the "family". But that guy just did everything wrong and stuck out like a very sore thumb that can't stop throbbing for an instant.

Finally I can go back to having a clean Ignore list.

Spot on.

I merely stopped posting in these threads because they all boils down to the same trolls misrepresenting anything ever said by a Sony rep, then KONY steps in and point that out (but in a shrill tone) and the baiting and namecalling starts. (Also because the PS3 was released in the US so the 3-4 PS3 owners on the board could dismiss the most ridiculous claims with actual facts... I still have to rely on having better reading comprehension)
I won't say I'm going to miss the guy since he was a shrill onenote poster, but I find it somewhat sad that this place didn't have room for one rabid PS3 fanboy amidst the Nintendo Zerg.

Jake Plane

K0NY, in his infinite dickdom, was a constant target...

I would just add to this that while K0NY was often prodded - I'll admit it to rattling his cage on more than one occasion - he often created a stir all by his lonesome, jumping into threads simply for the sake of saying something derogatory about other consoles.

And then, and I think this is what infuriated some people here, he would engage full boar, championing the PS3 and lambasting the 360 or Wii, until proved wrong or shouted down - and then instead of receding or apologizing, he would claim he was either just joking, had intentionally taken such a position to reveal hypocrisy or my favorite - flatly deny that he had ever posted what he was being accused of.

I don't mind fanbois truth be told. I think now that all the cards are on the table, it makes sense that there should be console partisans this round, especially given the significantly different approaches adopted this generation.

No, what bothered me about K0NY was that he was an irrational and belligerent fanboi. And therein lies the rub.

While we all are eulogizing Kony, let me say that I didn't have a personal problem with him at all. You can love a console or corporate entity like a piece of man-flesh and I'm ok with it when you keep it inside your bedroom walls.

What I didn't like was that every thread he entered was spoiled by his participation, generally due to his antics, occasionally due to folks taking out agression from another thread. It made reading threads about the PS3 or Sony a chore. I'm happy that burden will be lower.

The point isn't to compare the launch titles of the PS3 and Wii to the 360. It's that the 360 had an entire year in which to field candidates for GOY, and the PS3 and Wii have their launch lineups and 6 weeks to make an impression.

Pair that with how hard it was to actually GET a console, and it's not some ludicrous miscarriage of gaming justice the a 360 game won GOY.

Really, that's just schadenfreude. People like watching a big company fall flat on its face. If Sony gets their act together, most of us will own PS3s in a couple years and the launch jeers will be a distant memory.

As for KONY, I have no real problem with him. He's been a perfectly decent guy when I've played online with him on XBL, and his fanboyism isn't particularly extreme. I wouldn't have noticed except that I was speaking all three company names out loud to see how they would sound. Hehe. At the time of my post, I couldn't recall the fictional book title Protocols of the Elders of Zion or whatever it is. If I had, the funnier post would have been:

Protocols of the Elders of Zion, chapter 34:
Taking over the world through video games.

Protocol the Thirty-Fourth: What to do when the Klezmer is Overloud and Schmerzing your Ohren.
1. Bang on the window with your fist.
2. Shout, "Turn that down, verkochte schmendricken! People are trying to sleep! Some of us work, you know!"

You are thinking of Protocol Fifty-four, "Regarding The Children and Their Toys."

You guys. Joking in this hallowed place. THIS PLACE IS A TOMB! AUGH!

that would explain the preponderance of zombies in video gaming

Also, I never would have gotten the Kicrosoft thing if it hadn't been explained. I think the word "kike" had been swapped out into mental deep storage for so long I'd almost lost it forever.

Anecdote. Was at the EB in San Francisco Union Square today. PS3 demo kiosk totally inoperative, i.e. power was off.

Also for some reason they didn't seem to have very much in the way of DS games. Which is bizarre given how many people own one by now. What gives, there?

I believe it's been established that with a lot of stores that don't actually have any PS3s to sell, they're deliberately leaving the demo kiosks off so as not to attract any unwanted scum. When they're actually functioning, it's like flies round shit.

Well, if the stores don't leave them turned off, the PS3's are intentionally locking up to prevent loiters from appearing.

Are you going to pay for the monitor I just spewed soda on? ;)

Can we stab this 'laughed so hard my brain came out my nose and now I have to replace my computer because it has brain on it' metaphor or meme or turn of phrase or whatever the fuck it is really hard till it dies then burn the corpse then bury the ashes in a military spec containment facility under a crossroad at midnight somewhere? Really? It's been going ten times as long as 'all your base' and is ten times less funny.

No offence MS. I hate you, obviously, but for way different and more insane reasons which I will not relate here.

How about instead, we stop people from bumping month old threads with off-topic posts?
