I dug out my old copy of X-com the other day and tried to run it under win2k. I know about the CPU slowdown issue - I found a CPU killer for that. But the issue I am having is with sound. Win2k just won't let me configure sound...On start the game just craps out as the OS sees it going after the various DMA and IO settings....Anyone know some solutions off the tops of their heads? Or do I dig out an old machine, install DOS and have at it?

I can't recommend vogons.zetafleet.com enough for finding answers on how to get all these games working under modern operating systems. brief search for X-Com brought up a gazillion entires, so you'll probably find your answer there.
