View Full Version : Good grief, how overdue is a GI Joe shooter?

Reading the F.E.A.R. thread, it occurred to me that a GI Joe squad shooter would sell roughly a billion copies. Cool weapons, vehicles, enemies, bosses; it's all laid out beforehand, you just have slap some generic "destroy the doomsday machine" plot over top of it and you have an instant winner.
I mean, come on! There's no licensing issue that should get in the way of such an obvious cash cow.

What fun would be a shooter where no one get shot and all vehicals wait to blow up till everyone has safely moved away? Sure knowing is half the battle but it isn't half the fun

All of your "laser" rifles would be less accurate than the stormtrooper gun in "Dark Forces"

A GI Joe shooter would probably come with a "T for Teen" or lighter rating to take use of the expanded demographic.
Seriously who wants _less_ blood in a tactical shooter these days? Granted you do have the defined good-guy and bad-guy groups and characters to draw on. But it would probably be better served in a lighter themed RTS.

Problem is that everyone would want to be Snake Eyes, and no one would want to be Grunt and Breaker. I mean, seriously, Breaker didn't even have a gun WTF was up with that?

Yeah, the cooler characters are all loners.. snake eyes.. shipwreck..spirit.. I would totally play Scarlett third person to .. (don't say to watch her ass.. don't say to watch her ass..) watch her ass as she high-heels it around Cobra Island. I also think it'd be pretty neat, not lame, to see desperate cobras hopping out of their exploding vehicles left and right. And just as much as your machine gun lasers might only stun generic Vipers, the level where they let loose the B.A.T's and all of a sudden you can shoot their heads off and rip out their electronic guts would be awesome.
yeah, what the hell. But, just like the transformers movie, if a game was made it'd be on the new lamass 6 inch figures and not the Joes of yore. They made their second run a few years ago, and I doubt they'd get a third chance.

there was a sweet looking battlefield mod for this at some point, I recall all their vehicles models were spot on to the toys.

If they did a GI Joe game now they'd probably do it off the current line of toys, not the great stuff you guys are talking about from the 80's/early 90's. Which means it would suck.

A My Little Pony action/adventure would rock too. Have they made one of those?

is that what mommy got you as a kid, my little ponies? You know you'd love a gijoe game. Unless daddy taking them away and beating mommy are all memories related.

since everyone wants to be snake eyes, might as well make it a splinter cell/metal gear/stealthy type game
or make it campy like No One Lives Forever, the no deaths thing (cobras jumping out of exploding vehicles) could be really entertaining

That commodore 64 game is brutal on the eyes. Anyone remember Beachhead? He had like a knitted ski mask covering his face.

I wouldn't want to be Snake Eyes. I'd be that weird guy with the dogs. Steve Irwin, or whatever.

As overdue as a Voltron game. Well, more so actually since GI Joe probably has a larger fan base. But Voltron, I thought, always lent itself to gaming.

Couldn't you just beat each level by turning into Voltron right at the beginning?

Let me quote this from this link (http://www.scifi.com/sfw/anime/sfw13989.html), which a friend just sent me yesterday:
If time permits, the pilots attack ineffectively in their lion-ships, then merge their craft into the giant robot Voltron and attack with one or more of their many ineffective weapons. Finally, they whip out their one invincible weapon and defeat their enemy, by speaking the catch phrase that defined kids' programming back in 1984: "Form blazing sword!"
So the game can make you waste time doing crap first, to 'charge up the sword'.
(Did you know that the Ultraman fighting games on the PS2 does exactly this?)
On top of that, you can't see the princess's ass anyways. Stupid cape.

That does look pretty good, especially the part where you get to dress up your pony.
Oh, and in the GI Joe game, I call Sgt. Slaughter.

Epyx's GI Joe had the best loading screen ever. Well, actually it was just a "Turn disk over" screen; the actual loading took forever, and a Fastload cartridge didn't do much to help. Sweet memories!
I call Storm Shadow, for mo' ninja lubbin'.

Since I'm the one who's been whining about a GI Joe mod for FEAR, let me offer a similar one for Voltron:
I would pay upwards of $60 if Square-Enix would take Robot Alchemic Drive (http://www.square-enix-usa.com/games/rad/) and release it with a skirmish mode and Voltron models.
They wouldn't even have to update the engine one bit, just give me a damn skirmish mode and I'll pay full price again for the game.

Sounds like somebody wants a body massage!
As someone who grew up in the early to mid 1970s with "real" GI Joe dolls (meaning big, honking 12"+ tall dolls and massive vehicles, fold-out headquarters, all terrain vehicles, diving suits, all sorts of wonderful craziness), I'll only play a GI Joe shooter if I can snap different characters' heads off and use them interchangeably with other characters' heads.
And as far as those times I re-enacted scenes from The Bible using G.I. Joe dolls. Well. OK I was pretty weird... ;-)

Believe it or not, but C&C Renegade eventually just about transforms into GI Joe with multiple heroes and villains from either side with codenames, taunts...etc. Let's face it... C&C is just a gigantic rip on GI Joe anyway, right? :)

How overdue is a Ghostbusters FPS?I think the best Ghostbusters game would actually be somewhat GTA-style, or maybe Spiderman 2-style. You're the ghostbusters (maybe pick a character) in New York. You can follow the storyline and also tackle a bunch of Ghost-busting, romancing, con-manning (in Venkman's case), sciencing missions that forward subplots, or you can just run around and catch ghosts because bustin' makes you feel gooood!
Edit: I'm not gonna lie. An FPS would be awesome too and I'm totally downloading that "Ghostbusters Doom" thing right now.

I'd only want to play it if they did a localised version for the UK and called it Action Force.
