Hopefully this:

is going to get better. Because that looks like the original UT engine with a better lighting system. Also, do people hold revolvers sideways? I thought that was an automatic. Of course, I'm not up-to-date with current hood pistol posturing.

(Also, I searched for a Red Steel thread but couldn't find one)

Hey, cool, they are building the game as a Deus Ex mod!

Uhm, actually, it looks like Unreal Engine 2 (http://www.pc-erfahrung.de/Daten/Bilder/linux_ut2004_01.jpg) or possibly even 2.5, judging from the post processing and shaders on the swords. If I'm not mistaken that's the engine they're using.

I think Red Steel "looks" at how you are holding the Wii-mote and if you have it turned to it's side you hold your gun kinda like that. At least that's what it looked like from some of those videos.

Not Unreal. Also, the GPU has no shaders.

Hahahahaha! Charles, I know we're both huge DX fans and that is EXACTLY the first thing I thought of when I saw this shot!

I'm not talking about hardware pixel shaders, but the Unreal 2 software shaders. Not the same thing. And yes, it is Unreal Engine (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/17/red-steel-info-from-down-under/).

Red Steel is running on the improved version Unreal engine for the Wii system. A large portion of our team has already worked with the Unreal engine. They are already well aware of its strengths and weaknesses. We have pushed the engine to its limits to offer a rich, colored and different setting to the player.

I stand corrected, they must have done a hell of a lot of work on it, I don't recall Epic ever having an official GameCube target.

MatthewF
10-10-2006, 04:41 PM
They don't have one for Gamecube or Wii and never will. I guess they actually made the port themselves. And yeah, that's a hell of a lot of work.

Actually, the screenshots look a lot like NOLF2. If I showed you this NOLF2 screenshot (http://www.shacknews.com/screens.x/nolf2/No+One+Lives+Forever+2/2/032202/street2.jpg) compared to this one (http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/49141520061010_140612_6_big.jpg) from red steel, crappy bloom aside, wouldn't you buy that it came from the same game? NOLF2 really rocked. Of course it came out in 2002.

MatthewF
10-10-2006, 04:50 PM
Yeah it's definitely looking more current-gen than nextgen. UT2003 came out what, December 2002? So that comparison sounds about right.

I thought the exact same thing. Isn't that the jumpsuit that the chopper mechanics wear in some DX level or other?

But seriously, who is buying the Wii for its graphical prowess? Nobody. They're buying it for the awesome name.

It's not going to get better because the system is launching soon. The pistol is tilted probably because the on-screen weapon responds to whatever the player is doing. It's actually kind of cool: now people will realise just how stupid it is to do that.

Actually, the high resolution of those shots probably contributes to the crappiness. The graphics have been optimized for the resolution of an SDTV, not a monitor.

I must not be Mr. Discerning, because those graphics look completely passable to me (in the video, that is -- the screenshots actually look worse to me, but I'd be playing it at low-res with "natural antialiasing" (ie. blurry non-HDTV) anyways). They're no Devil May Cry 4, but they do appear to be at least a modest cut above what can be pushed by current late-gen consoles.

Is it fun? In this game's case, I think that is 110% going to be based on how the control implementation feels, and this game looks to be the acid test for just how tight the Wii motion detector actually is, since we'll be using it as a hardcore FPS mouse both for aiming and turning.

Much moreso than usual, Red Steel is probably going to be either stellar or a stinkbomb. I'd have trouble imagining this somewhere in between; it's certainly got a lot that it's going to have to get "just right" or it will flop, but the potential is there for "teh awesomess" more than most.

Is that the new marketing speak for "crappy"? Because man that looks crappy. I know, I know, I'm a nattering naybob, but what sort of talking point is "Our graphics don't need to look good because we aren't including HD support?" Will Nintendo provide complimentary pupil dilating eyedrops for their flagship titles?

And it's not like you can't tell the difference between a PS2 game and a Xbox 360 game on a SD TV. Beyond the Trespasser flashback arm movements, those videos look like Soldier of Fortune or something.

The people taking shots at the graphics of Red Steel sound about as dumb as the ones who were going on about the DS vs the PSP. Because the PSP with its superior hardware has so owned the..wait a minute.

The sort of point you're making up and attributing to other people.

The point I made is merely that it will look better on an SDTV than it does on your monitor. This is hardly unique to Red Steel; most any current or previous generation 3D console content will look awful (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=28673) if you render it at PC resolution. Why waste artist effort or disc space on detail that you can't even see on your target display?

I'm certainly not expecting next-gen graphics from any Wii game, I'm just saying that Ubisoft is making better use of its capabilities than those screenshots would indicate.

The only problem I have with the look of Red Steel is that the character models look goofy (which appears to be an art problem, not a technology one). The environments look pretty good. I'm not that interested in the game though because it looks like the controls are pretty wonky. They should have made it a fixed-but-moving camera game like an arcade shooter (eg. Time Crisis), then I'd be interested.

Is that right after the level where you get captured and they take away all of your items?

Yeah, it's the part where you have to stack crates using your real-physics arm to reach the researchers have hung from the ceiling. Uh, I mean, your guns.

Yea because the games with the best graphics in the home market always win out over the sub-par ones too...ohh wait.

I guess the online "hardcore" gamer crowed will never realize most people could give two shits about graphics if the game is fun to them..

Yes, because a $250 console selling $50 games about shooting/stabbing people is totally going to sell to the Bejeweled crowd. Mainstream gamers(Madden, GTA, Final Fantasy) aren't buying $400 video cards but they do care.

If they're buying Madden and GTA then no they don't.

Both look better than anything I've got right now, and more than good enough to be fun. *shrug*

The people in the last screenshot on the parent post, though, are terribly modeled. I worry more about the art direction than the tech level.

Actually, the swordfighting scene at the end of that looks far and away better than anything else. I was actually less impressed by that clip, not so much because of its graphics technology so much as the environment demonstrated seeming... eh... uninspired. Hopefully most of the game doesn't take place in a warehouse.
