My :60 review: good movie, but a shade too long for the material. Even if you see the "R" version (I did), it's extremely brutal in some parts, to the point that you'll be squirming in your chair. Hollywood makes movies where they may want you to know something is bad, but they don't want you to actually feel bad about it. This movie is definitely not like that. It can be very hard to watch in parts.

Some scenes are slow, but there are a couple of inspired choices by the director that more than make up for it, and some of the actors are really good. Thumbs up. Definitely worth seeing.

I was very surprised to see some commercials on TV for this. I'm glad it's getting a little buzz thanks to the Oscar nomination. There's a chance that it's being rereleased in your area.

I seem to recall someone referring to it as the "Brazilian Goodfellas", which is pretty close.

Some people also listed it as one of the top films of 2003.
