Caught this over the weekend. A good story, very well acted, Kate Beckingsale to stare at and a great performance from Frances Mcdormand. I left the movie thinking there is no more interesting actress in her age group to watch. Either she has the best agent in the biz, is well connected or just damn smart but she never seems to pick a dog. And the brit rocker stole the film.

Ugh. Stefan and I saw this at Sundance and I think we both agreed the word 'smug' was particularly apt. It had this self-serving 'people in LA really know where it's at' sensibility.

I couldn't stand Kate Beckinsale or Alessandro Nivola (the Brit rocker you mention). I agree about McDormand however. Not only was she convincing, but she looked *great*! Whichever one of the Cohen brothers she married (Joel? Ethan? Rob? Larry?) is a lucky guy.

Probably because Hollywood dumps most women after they can't pass for teenagers. When was the last time you saw Ellen Barkin, Laura Dern, or Andie MacDowell in a mainstream Hollywood flick?

Good point in general about Hollywood actresses. That was part of what I was trying to say. She gets these roles and makes them her own.

Tom I can see where you saw it as "smug". It definitely had a LA sensibility. Particularly the shots at the East Coast establishment in the intro.
