View Full Version : Islamist censorship of South Park

Old news, really, but I thought the point was well made enough to pass on. Who needs domestic censorship when you can have foreign censorship do it for you?! It also highlights just how silly comparing Christian right-wingers is to Islamists.

From ABC news (http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/Entertainment/story?id=2479197&page=1):

...In 2006, however, when Stone and Parker wanted to depict Mohammed in an episode, Comedy Central wouldn't let them. After all, Muslims worldwide had rioted over insulting depictions of Mohammed in a newspaper in Denmark.
It seemed odd to the creators of "South Park," who had been and were still allowed to depict Jesus in any number of profane ways. In fact, the episode in question, "Cartoon Wars," shows a cartoon (supposedly created by al Qaeda) in which Jesus defecates on President Bush.

Open Season on Jesus
"That's where we kind of agree with some of the people who've criticized our show," Stone says. "Because it really is open season on Jesus. We can do whatever we want to Jesus, and we have. We've had him say bad words. We've had him shoot a gun. We've had him kill people. We can do whatever we want. But Mohammed, we couldn't just show a simple image."
During the part of the show where Mohammed was to be depicted — benignly, Stone and Parker say — the show ran a black screen that read: "Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Mohammed on their network."
Other networks took a similar course, refusing to air images of Mohammed — even when reporting on the Denmark cartoon riots — claiming they were refraining because they're religiously tolerant, the South Park creators say.
"No you're not," Stone retorts. "You're afraid of getting blown up. That's what you're afraid of. Comedy Central copped to that, you know: 'We're afraid of getting blown up.'"...

Is there like a big official zip file or something that you get all your post material from? Is there someplace I can torrent it? Because I don't want to wait even another minute for your next outpouring of bullshit.

Yeah, it is futile, in a banging-your-head-against-a-brick-wall sort of way.

Like posting anything that doesn't toe the party line? We sympathize.

We sympathize.

Are you GrinR of Borg? By the way, I don't toe the line, if you'll research some of my past topics around here. I'm actually somewhere in the middle. But don't let that get in the way of your wounded dog complex.

Um, "we" as in you an I. We sympathize with each other.

...and did you just call me a dog, or was that a professional psychiatric opinion?

No matter.

GrinR, as one of the conservative folks on these boards, I implore you: please shut the fuck up.

Comedy Central have gotten awfully pussified, when it comes to South Park. Haven't they now twice bowed to scientology and once to both Islam and Christianity? They seem terrified of letting Matt and Trey piss off any religion (or cult) these days.

Not really. They're right now promoting reairings of the ten most controversial Southpark episodes, and you have to give them credit for running unedited version of things like the Southpark Movie late a night. It's not like Mohammed hasn't appeared on SP before. It was probably prudent to avoid depicting him again when there's violence in the streets already over the Danish comic.

The article goes over most of that history, and I'd agree with Brad in that when violent killers loom, it's prudent to be cautious about making them upset.

I thought their noting the difference between said violent killers and Christians/Buddhists/scientologists was worth reposting, considering the additional context.

Oohh GrinR, you've done it now, you've angered the gods of the board.

Did the Comedy Central executive staff become a military outfit? I must have missed that.

I don't expect bravery from civilians in the face of violent threats . It's something I admire when it happens, but as this forum bears out it's foolish to expect it.

Is that E. T. in the middle? I see the bug eyes, the spindly neck, the paunch, and what appears to be a healing ray of light from his finger.

Edit: Ranulf: Do you not feel that GrinR's body of work justifies my remarks?

I was thinking more a spear nailing ET to the wall... or maybe it's a walkie-talkie...
