View Full Version : This is what happens when you piss off UK Resistance

The Wikipedia entry for Lair, the upcoming PS3 game, has been hilariously vandalized. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lair_%28video_game%29)
The premise of the game is yet unknown, but may be loosly based on the BBC hit Dragons' Den. Although video footage shows dragons fighting to the death, a screenshot released shows a man with an erection riding a dragon, thus complicating the search for a possible gameplay style. It is possible that the player will be able to command a team or army of dragons to fight their enemies, introducing team-based gameplay, both online and offline. It could be a Panzer Dragoon clone or a tie-in to Disney Pixar's hightly anticipated Toy Story X-TREME , other sources indicate that it may well be the final chapter of Jayce et les Conquérants de la Lumière which is more widely known as Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors outside of the imaginary country of France. The identity of the man in the armor is currently unknown other than that he appears to have a fondness for dragons and enjoy riding them much as girls love riding horses due to the sensation of their backs grinding against their labia. There has been a rumour that Puff the Magic Dragon is a hidden dragon within the game, however, this hasn't been adressed yet as no one really gives a toss about a game about dragons in the first place.
It has now been confirmed that the game is actually based entirely on the song 'puff the magic dragon' the player will be required to fly various dragons whilst under the influence of class C drugs. It unclear at this moment in time how the come down will effect the player and dragon alike.
Well, I found it amusing, at least.
UKR's take on the game's visual progress (http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/2006/09/ps3-lie-watch-evidence-updated.html). Not as funny as the Wiki entry (which may have entirely been vandalized by UKR).
Edit: I'm sure it will get reverted back shortly, so get it while it's hot.

Earlier revision (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lair_%28video_game%29&diff=next&oldid=77024187):
Little is known of the gameplay mechanics. Although video footage shows monkeys fighting over a rice pudding, a screenshot released shows a fat man 'doing a goatse', thus complicating the search for a possible gameplay style.
...
Lair will make its debut at this year's Tokyo Game Show.
It won't be very good.

Wow, I just looked at the screens in the second link. The visuals are *barely* above playstation 1 quality. How sad!
Yup, I remember playing games on PS1 that looked exactly like this:

Hey, a dragon air combat game? Like that old dragonlance SSI dragon sim .. um ... I forget the title, circa 1987... Anyway, cool, if they can get it to be more than point 'n shoot.

The visuals are certainly better than PS1 quality, though we've already seen 360 games with better graphics.
I must point out that the image KONY posted is a 'target render' (read: lie). If he were capable of reading, he'd have realized that was the whole point of showing both of those images.

We've seen 360 games that look better than the target render, frankly.
Are there any other actual screens of this floating around? The shot UKR picked doesn't look all that bad, but it's hard to compare it to the target render.
You can see the video from GDC here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=d4ObQWVg4jo
It's early on, but you can see that the models are being rendered in the game engine. It's not a "target render." There's even a notice say the footage is "all in game." But whatever, just assume the worse about everything. Your lives will be so much less disappointing that way.

Wow, K0NY's right. In the GDC video you can clearly see that the people demoing the game are panning around the game models interactively. Graphics like that are definitely already being done in Unreal Engine 3, which runs pretty well on the PS3. And actually, it looks like the "crappy" screenshot of Lair is missing its normal maps. I have a feeling that shot was never meant to be released. I sense something malicious going on here.

The only time they pan around the models interactively is when they are still and not animated, which sets off a big red flag that they are hiding something, like maybe they are using PRT lighting on the models in those mockups or something so they can't animate them.
In any case, nothing in that YouTube video approaches the still you posted in terms of image quality, and not just because of the shitty FLV compression either.
The PS3 is clearly capable of creating good looking visuals, but I'm still waiting for something to show that it is notably more capable than the 360, since that's the line Sony has been going with.

FWIW, according to an IGN interview with Factor 5 today, Lair is 1080p native.
Virtua Tennis and Resistance are as well.

Well, you can't really tell on a shakycam vid. The models look pretty much the same to me, from what I can see. Also, it couldn't be PRT, because there is plenty of dynamic light from lightning and such, and while there are tricks to make PRT look dynamic, there's really no point when you can achieve the same quality of lighting without PRT. UnrealEngine 3 is a good example of this, and nothing in that Lair image is anything more advanced than your typical UE3 game, which, again, runs well on the PS3.

The sections at the beginning and the end appear to be a model viewer, since the models aren't animating. Note the camera controls on the GUI at about 2:20. The fighting dragons are impressive, and I believe none of it is beyond the capabilities of the PS3 or UE3. Those of you who have seen UE3 tech demos know that the engine is capable of near-photorealism and some extremely clever computational efficiencies.
But I don't think any of it is gameplay footage.

It looks like Rogue Squadron with dragons. It even has the stupid d-pad wingmate control scheme with the same organization.

Sure, it's early on. Which means that they probably are only running a straight up renderer with nothing else going on. They also have toned down scenes without actual game levels.
Games often look better early on, but as developers add, you know, the game, they start realizing they can't hit the level of quality they want.
Now, I can't say for sure what the case is in this one, but there's an 'in-game' screenshot there which is absolute shit. Sub-PS2 quality. So what happened?

after the killzone fiasco,. I dont believe a word that sony say about what playstation games look like. And considering the silly price of the thing, I wouldnt buy one even if they did look that good.
Sony really is the boy that cried wolf in terms of graphics. Unless I had a ps3 game personally demonstrated to me in my living room, I couldnt care anymore.
I've seen artists sit there in photoshop touching up their PC Game screenshots, and on consoles it seems its ok to just totally lie about what the game looks like. Its all really very sad. 95% of the game buying public assume this doesnt go on, and that the game will look the way it looks in the magazines. Its really very sad. I don't see why game magazines agree to publish screenshots they didnt take themselves. I'd give major props to any magzine that took a stance on that.
Bah.

I don't know what happened, but I know that there are currently videos all over the internet of actual gameplay from GDC where a guy rides a dragon around, attacks other dragons in the sky and lands on the battle fields to rip up enemy soldiers. Feel free to look into what's actually our there. Or you can just, you know, base your opinions of a game on a single screenshot that's been produced by internet vandals...if that works for you.

Now I don't even think you are a SONY shill, I think you are some sony AI they are testing to spam forums. No one could be as stupid as you let on.
I'm sorry I let my Emotion Engine cloud the issue, chet. You've found me out and now I must activate self-destruct protocol.

To be fair, UK:R did "produce" the screen shot in the same sense that lawyers "produce" evidence.
So what everyone is saying is that the single screenshot is the true indication of what the game "Lair" looks like and the videos taken from the numerous demo stations of people actually playing it at TGS are the fakes?

No, what we're saying is what's being shown now isn't that hot, and the obfuscation of what is real and what is not continues.
Liar.
So you believed me when I said that I was an Emotion Engine, but I'm the one who's stupid? That's the story you're sticking with?
No, what we're saying is what's being shown now isn't that hot, and the obfuscation of what is real and what is not continues.
What's being shown is significantly better than that screenshot you guys are claiming is real. Doesn't that negate its validity?
KONY, your logic runs that someone calling you a liar equates to them believing you? You are a showcase of stupidity.

What's being shown seems to be better than that screenshot, yes. After watching every single thing that's available on both 1up and gamespot, that screenshot does stand out as the worst one. However, there's still plenty of bad in there that doesn't match up with the stuff shown at GDC and at other times.
So while one screenshot may be the exception, the fact is that the game doesn't look anywhere near as good as they attempted to make it seem previously.
edit: And just so it's clear, the bad screenshot is definitely real. Things to compare: Wing edges of dragons, fire effect (the moving video has many occurences of fire looking just like that), wing textures themselves.
KONY, your logic runs that someone calling you a liar equates to them believing you? You are a showcase of stupidity.
My logic runs that you are a douchbag who is needlessly antagonizing me. When I make a joke about your douchbaggery, you take it seriously and challenge me to stop posting. Then you call me a liar when I fail to "self destruct." Now you're suggesting that my logic is flawed when I have used none to address your attacks.
How about this: you win, chet. Whatever the fuck you're trying to say about me, every word of it is true. Will that help us get back on topic?
Is it because of your mother that you say, "Doesn't that negate its validity?"
(sorry, old Eliza joke)
