What is is lately with Q23? I'm only bitching because I work in a straight laced workplace where I would get fired for browsing the EE forum lately. The P&R forum and the games forum hardly go a day without someone saying motherfucker or putting the N word in some post either. Does anyone else think this is turning for the worse and will scare away the very people we would like to interact with or is it just me?

Just curious here. Do you think that starting a new thread about this, with the name that you chose is the way to go here? And the whole using profanity thing.

And practically begging people to post NSFW pics in it as well?

Are you sure that this is the way to go?

I'm not begging anyone to post links to anyone here but I'll post one right now, here's a search for the F word on Q23. Notice how we have to go to page three to find threads that are on page two of the forums they're posted in.

I'm just wondering how many thousands of industry people there may be that work for you know actual companies with harrassment policies that would prohibit the perusal of Q23.

This is where I go to drop the F-bomb, Jackson. I've got a young baby girl. I need somewhere I can cut loose.

I'm sorry your workplace is straight-laced. But this place is an escape from places like that.

Edit: Also, I've gotten harassment training at work. Yes, if someone at work can see and read your screen, and they don't like what they see, it can be considered harassment.

But that just means you can't browse while at that job. Doesn't mean it's not 100% legal and groovy to get your Qt3 on later, no matter who the f--- you work for.

Seeing the word motherfucker is harassment? I guess they couldn't read your thread, then, Yuri...

Fortunately, the "snatch" thread doesn't show up in that list, so browsing the thread titles should be work-safe.

Sorry Hanzii, that isn't really the point. Just because you can doesn't mean others could.
I personally think Yuri is going a bit Mary Whitehouse on us and I am sure we have already had this thread, only about strippers' baps.

You act like this is some new onslaught of depravity. It's pretty much always been the case. If your workplace is that wound up, don't browse from work. Why should everyone else change to accomodate your puritanical overlords? Or are you just hiding behind that as an excuse to be a prude?

Oh, I agree. I just wanted to show you my new shirt.
But I was sort of surprised at the reaction to KONYs stripper thread, but got the point. That someone could actually be fired over what somebody else read over their shoulder was a complete surprise. It's just words.

I could understand firing somebody for reading about computer games at work - it's draconian and could never happen here, but at least it's somewhat logical. It is wasting company time. A company where it's ok to read about games... but not if any of the gamers use profanity just boggles the mind.

And what is the N-word (the one I'm thinking of hasn't been used by anyone here as far as I remember)? So it must be Nintendo.

Yuri, I can't think of many other threads that have used that word, and certainly none with that as the title. The context is also important, Jason wasn't calling anyone that, he was referencing a gaming column.

I don't like to try and guess Tom's motives but I don't think he has ever set out to make a family site here. Everyone who posts here are adults and should be able to handle adult themes and language. I certainly don't feel that the swearing or even posting of unsafe links is at all out of hand and Tom is pretty good about getting involved and sorting it out on the odd occasions when images are posted that are clearly inappropriate. The community also does a good job of policing itself in this regard as well, the KONY thread was not started by Tom but another poster. I feel totally comfortable posting and reading here at work and my workplace is nowhere near as liberal as Hanzii's (nice shirt by the way, where are we going diving?).

There goes my brief moment of demonic power!

The idea is the forum should be work safe, and it is.

But if your company forbids you from reading certain words, well... you are fucked. Pretty much fucked from most of the net. I am with you on the images, and a few thread titles are pretty stupid including this one. But words in a thread?

I agree with being sensitive as regards posted pictures. But words? Hm, if you can get fired for reading naughty words, well, as mentioned above, you'd better curtail Qt3 while at work. The level of profanity et al seems reasonable for a gaming site (given the demographics of video games).

If I had known that my joke based on that column title would have caused this much heartache, well, I probably still would have written it. There are words used here that I find offensive, but it's not because of the word itself, it's the context. The word idiot isn't particularly offensive until it is applied to someone directly. Same thing with the "n word." It's a word, and I wasn't applying it to anyone. It's an ugly word, I suppose, if you think of it's history, but it really only has power if it is used in a way to hurt someone else, to make them feel like less of a person. It's a word used to animalize people.

Anyway, no offense yuri, but you need to lighten up.

Not inlining NSFW images is something that is more or less followed here. Marking NSFW links is also generally followed so those who may get in trouble can chose not to click.

But if you need to have certain words also removed, then I think you had best stay off the internet in general from work. (assuming the post in question isn't making the Samuel L. Jackson phrase stand out in a 256 point font)

It has special status because it, well, has special status, at least in American culture. The word became such an important weapon in the war against equality that it rose to a level that only the c-word nearly approximates insofar as making people uncomfortable.

BTW, I highly recommend Randall Kennedy's book on the word. (http://www.amazon.com/Nigger-Strange-Career-Troublesome-Vintage/dp/0375713719/sr=8-10/qid=1158246294/ref=sr_1_10/104-8438110-8274312?ie=UTF8&s=books)

Thanks Troy, I'll put that on my reading list.

I still don't like it. I understand that the word makes people uncomforatble and has negative connotations and all that, and it should and that's fine. But replacing it with something that everyone knows what you mean, and then calling the replacment acceptable is pretty lame. If I was at work and said "f-word you!" to someone, it would have the same results as if I said "fuck you!" because everyone knows what I meant.
