Wow, extremely helpful, thanks. As a small aside, when MS came through the studio about a month back I asked them for a client-side-only note function that allows you to take a gamertag and "rename" it, but it will only be a local change to the appearance of the tags. I have lots of people on my friends list that I can't even remember who the hell they are, and my Gamertag is no better. I kinda prefer it when people put some part of their real name in their tag, so I can remember who they are. MS said they'd think about it and, of course, for many tags it's not really an issue as I don't have too much trouble remembering that balut is, uh, balut's gamertag. :)

I'm thinking about coughing up the $10 on live to change my gamertag to something a little more representative because others have asked the same of me.

I've been considering changing my Gamertag to something closer to my name here on Qt3, but I keep thinking about the cost, and how much I'd rather spend the $10 or so on something else.

So, a question. Is it a bad thing to have a radically different gamertag than forum name or does it not make a difference? I'm particularly curious because in my case, the vast majority of people on my friends list are from this forum. This isn't surprising because, unfortunately, few of my real world friends are gamers, and those who are, well, they're Sony fans.

Hey Andy, good to see you on here. How do you like TDU? I was surprised to learn that it is more of a sim-style than arcade racer. Frankly, that puts me off a bit because I don't like racing games with fiddly, "realistic" controls.

It's a pretty amazing game but the wow factor for me is the environment, not the car physics (which are merely okay). The previous Pitbull-designed Test Drive games were a joke (we gave TD6 an 11% in PCG back in 2000) but the switch to Eden Games (same studio that gave us NFS: Porsche Unleashed and V-Rally) was an inspired move on Atari's part.

I'd say more but I'd best wait until my OXM review is in the can :-)

When you register it'll probably ask for the console ID, which are tracked at POS. That being said, I don't know anything about this promotion, so it may be possible to game it (I'm gonna guess not though).

In all fairness, it might have been boxed as new by MS, so I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

I would, however, return the unit forthwith. The Xbox 360 is flakey enough, you don't need to working at a deficit from the outset.

You should be able to log out and remove the profile attached to the old gamertag.

Go to the System Blade, choose Memory, go to Gamer Profiles, and delete the tag for the guy who returned the console.

BTW, this has to be Best Buy putting a return back on the shelves. There are strict laws about selling refurbished units, and Microsoft can't just put a used hard drive in a box with a new console.

Keep an eye on GameFly. They often sell rental games that thay have too many copies of, particularly at the end of the year. If you rent from them, you have the chance to buy games that aren't for sale to the public, and you get free shipping and a discount based on how long you've been renting.

Right now, Viva Pinata is about $38, Dead Rising about $36 for "Keep It," but they aren't currently for sale to the public.

Just FYI, there's a rumor (http://kotaku.com/gaming/dead-rising/rumour-dead-rising-coop-241412.php) that the Platinum/Greatest Hits version of Dead Rising will include co-op play and that existing owners of the game will have to pay for the co-op add-on. Might want to see how that plays out first (it would be a pretty shitty thing to do to existing owners it the rumors are true, IMO...)

If true, I'll gladly pay. It would be NICE of Capcom to make it available for free, but I don't think it's shitty of them not to. Dead Rising was never billed as a co-op player game. When I bought it, it was a single player game and I picked it up knowing that.

If anything, I'm glad Capcom is not only still supporting the game but is going back and adding significant features to the game long after its release. I'd rather pay for added co-op than some horse armor anyday. Hell, I hope Eidos takes up the challenge and adds co-op to Hitman: Blood Money. I'd also pay for that.

For those of us with big friends lists the new Dashboard is a big win. It allows you to have up to 500 additional contacts via Messenger. While it's not perfect, it does make it easier to track more people on the 360 and PC.

The biggest issue is you need to have the email account that's linked to your Gamertag added to someone else's linked Messenger account. Since not everyone uses their primary email address for their Gamertag it can be tricky to figure out what address to use.

Hell yeah. I automatically deny any friend requests unless you send me a message saying you're from qt3. My friends list hit 98 people a couple of months ago and I had no idea who 75% of them were. I ended up ditching about 30 of them (all of them were tags that hadn't logged on in over 3 months), and my list is back up to 91 people :(

I also have a work one (GSIScooter) that I use for when I do the bi-weekly play-with-readers sessions, and just for kicks, I even made a Silver-level tag (to test differences between Gold and Silver in GFW LIVE titles like Halo 2 and Shadowrun) called FFS Teams.
Sad thing was, I played as FFS Teams in a dedicated server game in Shadowrun, and my team had 2 (just me and one other guy) versus a team of 5. No one acted on the lamentation that my GT clearly displayed, =(

So today I put in about a dozen gamertags to see how it goes. I found the only way to put a short message on was to record voice saying, "I'm from quartertothree" with each request.

Oh, and I accepted Denny's request months ago without ever knowing it was you! Now I know.

The one thing that's annoying is that while watching DVD's we get all the announcements of who is going on and offline. A friend told me I could shut this down in setup, but I spent about 15 minutes looking today and couldn't find any such setting. How do I disable messages while watching DVD's?
