Just FYI for those sending messages and friend invites tonight: Live is well and truly borked after some "routine" maintenance this morning. Watch the updates on Major Nelson's Twitter (http://www.majornelson.com/default.aspx) (left-hand side of the page), which is what passes for an official status blog with MS.

Speaking of the maintenance, rumour has it that this was for the deployment of the server-side support for clans, making their debut in Halo 3. Some slides that are supposedly from a previous GDC imply that it'll be on a per-game basis.

The one thing that's annoying is that while watching DVD's we get all the announcements of who is going on and offline. A friend told me I could shut this down in setup, but I spent about 15 minutes looking today and couldn't find any such setting. How do I disable messages while watching DVD's?
1) Press the Guide button (Big Silver X)
2) Select "Notifications"
3) Uncheck "Show During Videos"
And yes, it is weird that most settings are on the System bar, but a few are only available from the Guide button...

Yes, I still have no idea how to "edit text" on the original Friend Request dialog. I even tried to just send a normal message and it had no options regarding the friends list, although I could edit the text there. I'm sure it's probably buried somewhere, but I ended up sending an extra QT3 PS message to the few I attempted to add. I'll probably just follow suit and change my little quote to mention QT3, it would make this easier.
Just a reminder to please add a "from Qt3" message with your friends requests... I have a nearly maxed friends list pending requests from HighTwister and sykofant and I have no idea if they're Qt3 guys or random xbox.com folks.
Hey - I got a few invites from this sykofant character, too. I just deleted them because I couldn't identify who he was.

You can add voice to a friend request, but not text AFAIK.
I usually send a text message AND a friend request, because I prefer to add people through the Web interface.

Web interface is best, but once you've added someone, you can pick them from the top of the friends list and
send a message from there in the dashboard. You only need two letters and a number to identify yourself :)

I've almost done this a few times, then thought twice about it (traded it in). On the one hand, it's a really good game, but on the other hand, am I even going to play it anymore now that I have Halo 3?

Your gamertag is tied to a Windows Live ID, and you either had to create a new Live ID or tie your gamertag to an existing one when you set up your account, so log in with that.

It's possible you created an offline profile, which doesn't need to be associated with an email address, and the one I found is someone else entirely. You can check it here (http://profile.mygamercard.net/The+Desslock) instead without having to log in.
I think there's a procedure for migrating an offline profile to an online one, though I can't remember the specifics offhand. (Edit: Might just be a matter of going through the Join Xbox Live (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/livesetup/join.htm) steps. If you've already done that, then you must have entered an email address at some point.)

That's me! - that's my sad little collection of achievements (at least as of the last time I was online last month). I haven't really played anything other than Oblivion on my 360, other than to boot up and mess around a bit.
edit - I think I originally had an offline profile, and then I created an xbox live profile on January 1, 2007 (I think to download the free Oblivion mod offered last x-mas) - had no idea that I could move my offline profile, so I just created a new one. I have actually played the 360 more than that profile suggests, but I guess my other achievements are on my offline account.
Still have no idea how to login online to xbox live through my PC. I guess I just boot up my 360 and plug in a connection when I want to download a demo. Think the last time I was online I downloaded the bioshock demo.
I think "Desslock" was also claimed by me because I had to register through passport for something (maybe Halo pc?) but couldn't remember any information by the time I got a 360, and no longer had the same email address. Bah, give me config.sys and autoexec.bat, or require me to build a PC from scratch - I find this xbox stuff confusing, lol.

Go to xboxlive.com for at least a web interface.
I was doing that, but couldn't log in without an e-mail address. Figured it out - booted up the console and checked out my profile to see if there was an e-mail associated with it, which there was although I didn't remember it, so I can now access Live through online. Very exciting.
Actually it is kind of cool.
I think you can do everything with Silver other than play multiplayer games online. Halo 3 comes with a 48 hour upgrade to gold, so I'll probably try some multiplayer online at some point.

I had a Gold version, but just let it expire since I never played multiplayer. How is that not an xbox live account? I use it to download 360 patches and demos, etc.I was speculating, since the Gamertag you listed doesn't exist according to the system and it is not case sensitive. Either you mis-spelled it (I'm assuming you checked that), it was never an Xbox Live account (you're saying it was gold), or it was an Xbox 180 account that you let expire. The original Xbox accounts are burned forever once they expire unlike 360 accounts which just revert to Silver. In that case you'll need a new Gamertag entirely.

It looks like Islanti was right and one might work for a while. When I checked this morning, QuarterToThree had only about 35 friends. Even though the Qt3 Leaderboard has 197, it is possible that less than 100 are interested in this.

Yeah, that was a weird experience. I was playing Solo Rock Band when I got an invite from Mysterywisc, who I'd never heard of before. But I accepted. Since I was playing solo, I didn't have my mic hooked up, so there was no way to communicate. Mysterywisc was using a guitar and so was I, so I figured no one wants to be the bassist, so for every song, I kept waiting for a bit and then choosing Bass instead of guitar. It was my first experience being the Bassist, and it was pretty hard actually (since I couldn't really hear the Bass track that well, even with Bass Boost on). I kept trying to play on expert, since I figured playing bass was easier than guitar. I held my own though.
The main problem with multiplayer Rock Band is that since there's no multiplayer career mode, it lacks any kind of cohesive goal. Since I wasn't hosting, I wasn't choosing the songs, so I just kind of had to sit there and hope some songs got picked that I had fun playing. But there really needs to be some better structure to online multiplayer than just "get together and play a song".
It's a lot of fun in local multiplayer, but its hard to translate that energy of playing with a band to online multiplayer. I bet even with a career mode, online multiplayer wouldn't be as fun as local play, but it'll probably help a little.

Remember the purpose of the list is to have a large group of active QT3ers to play online with. I don't generally go through the list removing people. If I have a request from someone to be added I make room for them (which occurs randomly). I haven't had anyone come back and complain that they were booted so I'm not worrying about it.

As with the previous Qt3 list, I'd humbly suggest starting the name with "AA" or "AAA", like "AAAQt3 - Rhythm". That way the name shows up alphabetically as your first offline contact and you don't have to go searching for it. If its always the first offline contact you see, you're much more likely to remember to use it.

"a " as a prefix is something I've seen on another site which does genre-specific lists.
So we have...
a QT3-Board ##There's a strong interest in games like Catan and Carcassone as well as chess.
a QT3-Driving ##Racing Games
a QT3-Sports
a QT3-Rhythm ##Rock Band, Guitar Hero, etc.
a QT3-RPG
a QT3-Strategy
As for "a QT3-Shooters" being full... the only other solution for this is to make specific lists for each shooter. Something like:
a QT3-Rainbow6
a QT3-CallOfD
a QT3-TeamF2
a QT3-SplinterC
a QT3-BattleF
Am I forgetting any? These are kinda funky names because Gamertags are limited to 15 characters. We could also just use the common abbreviations (CoD, RS, TF2) but that might be confusing for some (?).

Having one for each game kind of defeats the whole point - the same people will probably be on each list anyway, and then you've just wasted 5 (or more) friends slots for each person.
How many people are being kept off the Main QT3 list that want to be on it right now anyway? Or are we just future proofing here.

Having one for each game kind of defeats the whole point - the same people will probably be on each list anyway, and then you've just wasted 5 (or more) friends slots for each person. There will probably be quite a bit of overlap. However, if someone *hates* Rainbow Six, they probably wouldn't add themselves to that list. I'm willing to try it with just "Shooters" for now. We can always depreciate the list in favor of the individual game ones.
How many people are being kept off the Main QT3 list that want to be on it right now anyway? Or are we just future proofing here. There are more than a handful of people I've removed for inactivity and a few more who want on the list. There's also a healthy dose of future proofing.

What Fugitive said, plus, I noticed that in some situations the option to invite disappears. For example, in Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, if they're in single player, or the lobby (or 360 Dashboard), the option to invite is there. But if they're in certain parts of the menu in those games, then the option to invite them disappears until they get out of that menu. This is much easier to notice if their 360 is in the same room as you, and you can tell them to hurry the hell up.

I stopped updating this thread because Tom started a new one, which he also stickied for a while, and then he unstuck it, mysteriously, but you should probably find that one.

OK, I just realized I can make the signup for the QT3 leaderboard open, so now you all can add yourselves and I don't have to feel vaguely guilty for not looking at gamertag threads for months at a time.

Everything was consolidated into a database, and there should be a link to it in the stickied rules thread.

I believe Wholly Shmidt is the person you're looking for.
No wait, maybe it's Union Carbide that you're looking for, since he's the one who created the Leaderboard itself, while Shmidt maintains the first post in this thread.
EDIT: Add yourself you lazy bums! (Apparently! Sorry UC!)

And for the record, I haven't been updating this thread since that other list where you can add yourself was started.

It's mentioned at the bottom of the forum rules/new members sticky thread, though that's easy to overlook.

Try going to this page (http://www.mygamercard.net/clboard.php?id=bDr6dm46), which is the QT3 leaderboard. Right below the drop-down boxes, on my screen, there's an option to "Leave this Leaderboard". It appears right above the first person on the list. Presumably, if you're signed in, that will instead say something about Joining the Leaderboard instead. (I assume).

This is what was confusing me too. I don't see anything like that in the area that rock8man is describing, just two buttons that say "Reset" and "View Leaderboard"

Did you go to the page and then make sure you're signed in in the upper right corner, so that it has your gamertag up there? That's the only thing I can think of right now. Like I said, I'm already signed up, so I don't know what the page looks like for people that aren't.

Hm, I've basically taken the last 6 months off from console gaming, but I've only fallen to sixth. The stack of unplayed 360 games is growing...
Sheesh, some of you guys are achievement whores.
BTW, my gamerscore went up by about 200 yesterday (finally got to Civ: Rev) and it hasn't updated on the leaderboard.
Rock8man

Sometimes it takes some time to update.
That 250 gamertag limit sucks. It also puts a damper on XPav's stats a bit, knowing that, since it's now a sampling instead of being representative of everyone here.

That sort of arbitrary stupid limit makes me want to punch somebody in the neck. It's not as bad as the 100-person friends list cap, though.

Yeah, that limit annoys the hell out of me. As a Gold member, I should have unlimited capacity. Heck, limit Silver members to 5 if required to make room. ;-)

The limit is even more infuriating if you have friends on your Zune because the limit is shared between them.
Rock8man
07-27-2009, 01:35 PM
Apparently it has to do with legacy support. Jason Cross asked MS about it a while back. The original Xbox is hard-coded and couldn't handle it if they upped the limit from 100.
I was about to say: who is still tied to the original Xbox? But then I had a look at the bottom of the Qt3 leaderboard, and apparently we have someone here in that list who has zero gamerscore and is still using XBox Live to get online using an original Xbox, so what do I know?

Since the QT3 group at mygamercard is full at 250 (and will no doubt remain so), is there enough leftover n00bs like myself to start a second QT3 group, or does that make no sense?
Rock8man
08-16-2009, 08:23 AM
I think it makes sense. There seem to be a lot of people here that wanted to be on the list but couldn't. Even people who have been playing on their 360 for a long time, like Lizard_King.
You might want to start a new thread to get people's attention if you do it though, and do it on a weekday, when you'll get more people's attention that might miss it on a weekend.
