Trying to determine if I should purchase the 2 year service plan. I bought an extended warranty for my laptop. Is an xbox360 less reliable than the average laptop?

I think the answer is probably yes to your reliability question.
On the other hand, there's no reason consoles should ever fail without extenuating circumstances (overly hot rooms, etc.) I mean, it's not like the 360 ever moves out of its place once you set it up. You're not carting it around like a laptop. Three years seems like the minimum that things like this should work, but I'd just take a year of service for chrissake.

I have the 2 year service plan, and my xbox has not died (yet). It's only $50 or so, and 2 year replacement is well worth it, if only for the piece of mind.

Agree with SqueakyFoo. Best to get it and have piece of mind. Did so for the Xbox and was glad I did.
A similiar poll (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=27638&highlight=poll) to this one was done in hardware and the results were:
No problems 92.00%
One problem 2.00%
Two problems 2.00%
Two+ 4.00%

Mine broke 6 months after I bought it but they still gave me the warranty.

That's an interesting thing. In the first call I made, they said my warranty only ran out at the end of June. Apparently, there's some kind of stealth warranty that goes beyond the initial 90 days, probably because they know damn well a lot of these launch-era systems will fail.

Yes, get the warrenty.
I'm about to trade in for my 3rd xbox. It saves me an awful lot of grief knowing I can just walk into Best Buy and hand them the broken one and have my new one almost immediately.

You can do a 1 year one as well if you arent sure if you want to pay for 2 years. It's $30. And yes you can buy another 1 year during the course of that one.

My launch model still works fine. However, I would definately get the 2 year warranty. I couldn't because a friend bought it for me when he saw it in a store. I would have got it if I bought it myself.

The warranty paper is in the box. It's the first thing you see when you open the 360. It's like a sign from God that you should pay even more money to make sure your 360 works for at least two years.
