There's fandom, and then there's REAL fandom, getting a tattoo from your favourite game across half your back!

Follow the link for the EVE Online image (in progress) someone paid 2,400 quid for.

Mostly people accusing him of being batshit insane and a great link from the Goonswarm (Something Awful corporation of some 2,000 (!) members) to a Star Wars geek's tattoo...

Isn't 2,400 British Pounds like $4,800 US dollars? Yikes...

That stuff ultimately isn't as rare as you'd think. While not common, I know a few folks who went pretty crazy with gaming tattoos. One of my good friends has a huge array of Necron symbols (warhammer 40k) down his back, much larger than the example you posted. I've met lots of folks with quake and unreal logo tattoos too. My skin remains undecorated, however.

p.s. nice viral job.

You know that could be cool but seriously it looks like a 10 year old drew it. I have seen better art in Nintendo power.

Looks like he should've spent that money on a personal trainer and removal of that hair on his back instead.

I vaguely remembered someone on qt3 getting a planescape tattoo, and a little searching and it was kalle, he's apprently not alone:
http://crap.planescape-torment.org/tattoo.htm

As tattoos go, most of those planescape ones are pretty nice. Way better than the awful cartoon eve one, and a bit better than all the "tribal" crap and random asian characters people seem to favor.

Whoa, that bottom one is pretty awesome. The shadowing on the tattoo really makes it seem more three dimensional than most body art tends to be. Thumbs up.

The Planescape ones are good. Good quality artwork by a skilled artist. I'm not sure what to make of the Eve one without seeing the reference.

He paid 2400 pounds for that? Holy fuck did he get ripped.

Yeah, the Planescape ones look like they were done by professionals and they are simpler designs than the symbol+woman thing. Complex tatoos of people tend to look like crap.

It looks as stupid as any other girly tatoo

tattoos are for attention whores anyways.

A famously tattooed rocker was buying groceries at a deli where his bodyart attracted the attention of a middle-aged woman. The woman was giving the rocker the stink eye so the rocker turned to her and said "I don't mean to be rude, but I got these tattoos to isolate myself from people like you".

Yeah, we also had a couple people write about their Neverwinter Nights tats at the BioWare forums awhile back.

Can't say I'd ever get a gaming-related tattoo... or perhaps I just haven't thought of the right one.

All I can say about my tattoo is that flat black on skin looks bad cause there's not enough contrast. I convinced the guy who did mine that I wanted the head black, despite his better advice to get it shaded like the rest of it. Something worth keeping in mind when I get another one I guess.

I'm a pasty white boy and my black tattoo stands out extremely well against my skin. Or do I not understand what you're saying?

I can't imagine myself ever getting a tattoo, but if I ever did a goomba, pac-man, Manny Calavera and the Lady of Pain would all be in high consideration.

Jasper

Manny, nice! I could also see some sort of Crimson Skies tatoo...

Seriously though, if I were to get a game tatoo, it'd have to be from a game I actually created, rather than just played.

Videogames are just as valid as any other medium. Just because the symbol comes from a game instead of a movie, TV show, or maori ritual, that doesn't mean it's insignificant. Why does planescape evince discussion when yogi bear, terminator, or star trek never would? Who gives a shit?

And as to whether tattoos in general are kewl and stylish or foolish and low-class, that discussion belongs in P&R and not here. Please.

Surely somebody out there has got a Horde or Alliance badge tattooed on them...

The original image was black on white. The small details that were sharp there are not that sharp on skin. And, of course, tattooing is comparatively low-res compared to images on paper.

If gaming is your major hobby it seems like a gaming tattoo (presuming you're into that sort of thing) is the ideal choice. It quickly communicates useful information to other people "in the know" and looks like any other tattoo to the uneducated masses. Sounds perfect.

While waiting in the Wii line at E3 there was a guy who would come down asking for odd things. If you had that odd thing, he would take you to the VIP line and you'd go right in (to wait in more lines at the individual Wii consoles).

One of the things he asked for was a Zelda tattoo of some sort.

No one in the line had one, but if I'd have had a ball point, I would've faked one.

Tatoos with chicks who have big knockers. Do you think I'm suggesting he should carve it in his arm?

Wonder if Sony had something similar?

No, but I'm suggesting you learn how to spell "tattoo." And yes, obviously I 'm suggesting he carve it on his arm.

I just glanced at someone else's spelling for reference, oops!

Whatever, chick with big knockers on a motorcycle is just as dumb as chick with big knockers holding a gun.

I would get the squiggly logo from Hitman: Codename 47 as a tat. Also the logo from Thief, if there was one. :(

Just get a tattoo that says "THIEF" in the font used on the game boxes.

And get it on your forehead.

I think you've got it backwards. Planescape tattoos are far cooler than Yogi Bear, Terminator, or Star Trek logos. ;-)

My take is just that I don't care to have someone else's commercial logo indelibly imprinted on my body. Planescape is pretty low key, but in general I'd rather not be branded.

I really, really want a TRIBES tattoo, but I can't for the life of me find any iconography from that game that isn't lame as fuck. There's the Blood Eagle symbol, which looks like Tribal Choice #18 from the Wall of No Imagination, but that's about as good as it gets. The best I've come up with so far is just a nice, serifed 'VAV.'

I'd imagine that someone with a star trek tatoo would get mocked much more than an Eve Online tatoo because most people actually know what star trek is. Once you start explaining what the tatoo is about, that all changes though...

The bottom symbol looks like friggin gold though, which makes me think once this tat gets completed it might look pretty damn decent, despite the 'boobie' gal.
Seriously, for a tat that bottom symbol ( which looks like the most complete part) looks amazing. Gratz to the artist.

I knew a guy with a big Warhammer 40k tattoo. I found it kinda off-putting in a way I don’t usually find tattoos, but it did lead to the line: “No, you idiot, you’re supposed to pain the models. Not yourself.”

PS: "nice viral job"? What? If I was in charge of hyping EVE, the last thing I would do is call attention to the psychotically dedicated catassers with more money than sense. Instead, I would call attention to the game’s beautiful graphics, deep economic models, and unprecedented sense of scale!

You missed the boat, Lokust. Dave47's response to the VM accusation was a funny. Of course, that's just the kind of thing a true VM would do- wait for the setup and disguise his pimpage inside a joke...

What say you, Dave?
