Is this a trend that I've missed, or is this something new?
Has technology finally reached the point where games are going to have longer than a 1 year life span? Are we going to see more of the classic games updated and re-released? Are we going to see the same thing again in 5 years to make all of these work under Vista?
Matrix has re-released The Operational Art of War(Yes, it will work under Vista.) They're also planning to re-release the Campaign Series.
Now someone is re-releasing the Close Combat games.
I'm really hoping that games are getting to the point where they're more like books, and less like movies. I've tried the nostalgia games like X-Com, MOM and MOO, and I can't get past the graphics<g>. Are we finally getting to the point in graphics where enough is enough for all but the top few games?
I know that sequels have recently become a very important part of gaming with companies creating one engine, and putting out 3 or 4 sequels with the same engine and new content, but I haven't heard much about companies reworking and releasing older games until recently.

All I gotta say is that if I have to deal with crummier graphics then the game better run super smooth and maxed out details. DAOC is just plain disappointing, the graphics aren't that great and it still runs like dog shit on my 6600GT if you crank it up.

The Close Combat games actually run at quite high resolutions as it stands (1280x1024 for CC3 if I recall correctly?) so its not so crazy to re-release them, esp. as graphics are not the big barrier for fans of the genre...

I just finished writing on my website (http://www.cesspit.net/drupal/node/1407) wishing something similar.
(A re-release of the whole Baldur's Gate series into one, seamless game)
I think that if well done and with some incentives (like a few new features and content here and there) it could be something truly sucessful.
(and btw, Baldurdash was updated just yesterday with 70+ bugfixes (http://www.baldurdash.org/TESOblivion/TESOblivion.html) for Oblivion)

Baldur's gate would be pretty easy to convert into NWN or their next gen engine.
I miss the Wizardry/M&M games.
Oblivion is something like it, but it just down't have the same feel to me.
Is there anything like that on the horizon?

Yep true rpgs like wiz or m&m seems to be dead but you know the old saying?
That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die
So hope for a resurrection of the genre like baldurs gate...

I missed OAW the first time around but I have played CC2 recently. It appears to still have a strong community with active modders. The 2D art looks quite good and the game uses convential resolutions. I don't think you could re-release a 3D title from the same period without retooling the graphics engine and updating the art.

I saw that someone was working on something like that.
I'm looking for something more like the old Wizardry games, FPS perspective, but either step by step, or fluid for movement, but turn based for combat. I haven't seen any of them since M&M (IX?)

I think it's a huge improvement over what it was before.
I worked for a while on the upgrade a year or two ago, up until the web-site got hacked.

I don't know. That's the site I remember though. It's a shame the site was hacked.
I can understand wanting to hack into MS or Google, or some other sites, but why hack into the simple sites? What's the point? It's just some script kiddie with a list of exploits.
