The real story is boring and pedestrian and deals mostly with my paranoia. So I've concocted a much better one.

A few weeks ago my supervisor called me to his office for an unscheduled closed-door meeting. This made me a little suspicious since it a was very rare thing for this particular boss to call a closed door meeting. Plus he just looked nervous and a little grim, which definitely alerted me that something was up.

Once he had the door closed and we had privacy he turned to me and said, "Nick, we need to talk about something."

"At my request the IT department has been monitoring all of your internet usage and providing me daily reports. Even more troubling than the heavy /b/ and midget porn site usage is your postings on a site called quartertothree.com."

I was floored, I really didn't know how to respond to that. The best I could to was try to keep the panic off my face and essay a casual "oh?"

"You see Nick, it's been revealed to me from these postings that you are a flaming gay loving liberal atheist. And worse you refuse to embrace the awesomeness of Xbox LIVE. I'm afraid we are going to have to terminate your employment."

This is unfortunately where my rage started overtaking my ability to make calm cool decisions. They were really going to fucking fire me over my political beliefs and the fact that I'm the only one who sees what a ripoff LIVE is? I was seeing red and my hands were starting to shake a little. I tried to swallow it all down and maintain my composure. "Listen, if you are worried about productivity I can confine my QT3 usage to lunchbreaks and off work tim . . " He was shaking his head before I'd even gotten halfway through the sentence.

"Nick, we've got no place in our organization for single player fetishists like yourself. I'm going to escort you out of the building. Please don't speak to anyone. Your personal effects from your desk will be mailed to you later."

I just couldn't believe he was being so shitty about the whole thing. When he stood up and grabbed my arm to start escorting me out I just . . . lost it. The next few minutes were a confused blur to me. Mostly what I remember now was a light headed sensation and a buzzing noise coupled with a strange sensation of tightness in my head. After a bit I became aware of two things roughly simultaneously. One was that my knuckles hurt a LOT. The other was that someone was grabbing me from behind and holding me back. My supervisor, or I guess former supervisor, was lying on the ground with blood all over his face and shirt. I couldn't believe what had happened, what I'd obviously done.

Just before the police cuffed me, I did get a chance to step past the paramedic attending to my former supervisor and say to him, "How did you like that multiplayer action n00b! PWNED!"

And from now on that's how we are all going to remember how it always happened.

As the most banned and unbanned QT3 member, by far, I have to say Tom really is pretty fuckin' fair about wielding the hammer. I was going through and cleaning out PMs yesterday to make room for the vampire game, and I found some old exchanges with him. Even without our days in the Springtime sun, playing Legos on the XBox, and sipping coffee and beers together, I have to admit going back and re-reading those PMs without a shitty attitude updated my POV.

That's where good writing, history of posts and opinions, conversing outside P&R, and general avoidance of trollish comments helps. It may be hard to judge tone in a single piece of writing, but this is a message board, you are allowed to clarify, expand and engage. Writing in polite tones also guarantee that future post will be viewed with a certain benefit of the doubt, (or at least favourably).

If anything, I find striving to be more human in a dehumanizing environment, leads to better perspective on being more humane in an everyday situation.

It's all done using Excel! Remember when people used Lotus 1-2-3 as a word processor or DTP program? Well, these days it'd be pretty easy to make this chart using Excel.

But seriously, the Bananas and Nuts chart is made using the unlikely combo of Serif PagePlus and Micrografx Picture Publisher. It's funny what you can do with an inexpensive DTP package, and I like the interfaces of both programs. The main thing was that they loaded instantly on my old laptop compared to the Adobe offerings. Now that I have a new PC I'm thinking of rebuilding the chart using Illustrator and Photoshop.
