I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years and years, but there was an old, old PC game I read about in Game Players' magazine when I was a kid, where you were a person unjustly thrust into hell.
It was a dungeon crawler, I think, and your goal was to find and recruit your girlfriend and your best friend, or something like that. Along the way, you could recruit characters like Napoleon and Hitler for your party. I remember the interface looked a lot like the one for the SSI gold-box games, like Pool of Radiance.

Yeah, it's what I see everytime someone tries to hotlink mobygames.

I know that game. I think you actually entered hell.

Could it really have been GamePlayers' magazine where he read about the game, then? I didn't know they had been around that long, and I don't think they covered PC games.

Yep, that's the one. Thanks, folks.
I read a review of it in the back of Game Players' all-inclusive mag back in the day. They covered Nintendo, SMS, the Amiga, and so on. I remember another review of a game that was the result of a bet, that somebody couldn't churn out a Tetris clone from scratch in some relentlessly short period of time.

just curious, what sort of stats/skills did adolf and bonaparte have?

I never actually played it, I'm afraid. I was mostly reminded of this by a friend asking how many games I could remember that had Hitler in them.
You can find out for yourself, though:

We really do need a lot more humorous RPGs. When was that last one made? Grim-Fandango I think.

I think most people would call Grim Fanango an Adventure Game. Anachronox would be my entry.

Well, if the Bard's Tale remake could be termed an RPG (an RPG lite if you like), that would be a fairly recent one that was overtly humorous. Or so I heard -- never actually played it.
There was Tangled Tales, waaay back in the day when Origin was releasing lots of non-Ultima RPGs (Space Rogue, Knights of Legend, Moebius and Windwalker, 2400 AD).

Sigh, I have such fond memories of those times. I absolutely loved Moebius nad Windwalker, and all those other titles had their own merits. Origin was the single greatest developer with a wide range of titles from RPGs to sapce shooters. Before they went off and became an MMO company and died a long painful death.

The recent Bard's Tale action-RPG was definitely tongue-in-cheek, though some of the humor was a bit too forced / obvious, not unlike some parody movies (e.g., Scary Movie).
But yeah, definitely need more RPGs with a sense of humor. Geez, how many times do they expect us to beat Floozle with a straight face?
