Well, well, isn't THIS a pleasant surprise? (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/10/super-smash-bros-brawl-revealed-for-wii-featuring-solid-snake/)

That's cool but does this mean the new controller won't be fully utilized? Or will it simply be "backwards compatible" in that the people who want to re-learn how to play will be even better?

Online play, with an battle item that makes a Nintendog run up to your opponent's "camera" and makes it so all he can see is puppy face.

When I sii things like backwards compatibility with Gamecube, and things like this where the game flatout says it is compatible with the Gamecube controller, it makes me wonder if you can just turn a Wavebird and the Wii will sii it. It would bii pretty niit, anyone know?

"Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature two control modes: motion-controlled and classic, GameCube-style combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can do so using the GameCube controller they're already accustomed to while the new motion control adds a new dimension previously not available in fighting games."
Hooray!

Nintendo is tampering with primal forces of the universe here. I'm fairly certain that putting Solid Snake and Nintendogs in the same game is the sort of thing that could cause the threads of reality itself to unravel.

Ok, fine, but I really am wondering that. Can it use a Wavebird? It seems like maybe it can, just from things they've said.

Paramedic: "Snake, what are you doing?"
Snake: "What are you doing here?"
Paramedic: "Don't do it."
Snake: "What?"
Paramedic: "You were wondering what that Nintendog would taste like, weren't you?"
Snake: "No, I wasn--"
Paramedic: "Don't even think about it, OK?"

Haha, that's golden. Did you come up with it, or was that at the actual presentation?

I didn't come up with it, it was a paraphrase of one of the gag videos for MGS3, where Snake finds a white horse just standing around in the jungle and all of a sudden Paramedic is there.
It used to be online somewhere, but if you can't find it, it's in the Secret Theater of MGS 3: Subsistence.

Awesome.
I love how all the Smash Bros. characters transform from the old GC models into new Wii models with more polys and better textures and whatnot, but when Kirby transforms, he ends up looking exactly the same (and seems sort of disappointed about it).
The Snake bit at the end was hilarious.

this makes me wonder where the Wii version of Punch Out is. It would be perfect with one nunchuck in each hand.

I love how in another thread we have people saying MGS will never come to Nintendo, and now Snake is in SSB. That doesn't even make sense... but I am going to enjoy destroying the Nintendogs!!1!11!!!!
Actually, a lot of this has my metaphorical prank/hoax-sense a-tingling.

Oh, now that you mention it, I kind of remember seeing that one a long time ago. Still, your paraphrasing of it in this context is very effective. ;D
This is the first game I've gotten excited about on the Wii; maybe this E3 wasn't a complete waste.

Nintendo sure knows how to please their fans. Trailer looks great, one of the best game-trailers i've seen.

I liked it up untill the silly fart jokes, then I was reminded that Nintendo is just for kids.
... but then it got fun again.
But isn't this game the perfect example that whatever price Nintendo puts out with one controller doesn't matter - the real price will have to be with 2 or more. This is the party game console and I think I'll have to get one.

From the gamespot article:
"The next questioner raised a major issue, asking if Super Smash Bros. Brawl would support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Sakurai said his team will try to take the game online, but he thinks it would be a hard to make four-player online work."
This really concerns me. I don't like the sound of "we will try to get it online but it will be hard". Hard to make 4 player work?? Fuck that! I've been waiting years for a Smash Bros. that is playable online. If they drop the ball on this, it could really be a dealbreaker for me and the Wii.

Hmm. Are there actually any four player fighting games that support online? I guess the problem in this sort of game is that even a slight delay ruins the game, and client-side prediction is much more difficult to do than for straight up shooters.
