So did anyone else pick this up today? I just finshed playing up to mission 8 with vergil, mission 3 with dante. I don't know, I really wish they would have fleshed vergil out more, give him unique missions and such. It feels like a real slap in the face that they couldn't let you fight dante during the brother's fights.

Did some bloody palace with vergil and got up to floor 900.

I was about to go pick this up, having skipped it the first time around after reading how difficult it apparently was. But I was browsing 1up and they said it's a fair bit easier now that the game has a save system. Plus, $20!

Someone link the WOOOOOOOOOOO! graphic.

Yeah from what I read on gamespy,

easy is super easy, normal is dmc3's easy, hard is dmc3's normal and etc to dante must die diff.

Tried snagging a copy today, but was snubbed. I'll check back this weekend.

I did walk out with Killer 7 though.

It's only $20? I didn't play the original either, but that sounds about right for a try.

Devil May Cry 3 was one of the very best games I've played in a long time, so at $20 it's still well worth it. Especially now that those who aren't obsessed DMC fanboys like me won't be put off by the insane difficulty.

I'm honestly amazed that the game is so popular given how punishingly hard it can be. Granted, it is the only recent game I've seen where you can rock enemies to death with a guitar that doubles as a halberd, which I'm sure helps its cause, but most of my friends who tried it never got to see that in action because they couldn't get past the first boss.

Heh I had a friend over a few weeks ago and watched him play ninja gaiden black, took him forever to get past the first boss , and that was on normal.

Same story for me. I didn't know this game existed, saw 1up's review, grabbed it on a whim at the mall today. Now if only I could pry my roommate off the tivo.

I really suck at this game. Dead on the first boss twice in a row, I'm calling it a night.

Are you playing as dante or vergil? Also by first boss do you mean the ice dog or grim reaper?

I remember the first time I played DMC3 and got really frustrated by the first grim reaper. Seemed way too difficult for only being 5 minutes into the game. There are lots of annoyingly difficult parts, but it's still a very excellent game.

Dante, grim reaper. I think I'm used to being able to block in games like this.

Jab2565
01-26-2006, 04:10 PM
Yeah blocking is nice, you may want to use either trickster for dashing, or royal guard for blocking. Trick is to keep attacking him when he's blocking, when he counter attacks get out of the way and attack. If he starts to attack you hit him to get him to block and repeat.

I just beat the game as vergil and I'm disapointed. Unless the additonal stuff is on higher levels, there were no additional cutscenes unlock for beating it on normal. I may try it on hard later, but I found the vergil fights harder as vergil.

Trickster is a really helpful skill to stick with early in. You are invincible during the dashes and the Reaper has various teleport attacks that require you to keep a bit of space from to survive. Keep a watchful eye on him as you fight, it shouldn't take long to discover his tells for each of the attacks and how to proceed in avoiding them.

Make sure you have purchased stinger for your sword before going up against him as well, it's one of the most vital combat abilities in the game.

You can pause the game at any time as well for a quicksave that banks any orbs, items, and other stuff you've earned up to that point; best to do often right before any major encounter in the game so as not to lose all the loot you earned facing the grunts. You can keep your bank account flowing with every retry and progressively power yourself up for a slight advantage.

Being able to save anywhere would make the game WAY easier. Well, maybe "easier" isn't the best word, but it would be a whole lot less frustrating. There are few things that are more aggrivating to me in otherwise great games than having to redo 30 minute sections because of one tough spot. I would've replayed DMC and DMC3 several times if not for their stupid save points.

When I saw that this had been rereleased at such a low price I ordered it on Gamestop instantly. Looking forward to it!

This game sounds interesting.. Basically a beat em up with.. rpg elements? Odd. Of course, if it makes Gaiden look easy I'll probably snap it in half.

Jab2565

I think it's easier then Ninja gaiden. Dmc3 enemies rely on tells about what attack they're going to do. Alot of the game is figuring out when to attack .

Definitely turn down the music if you currently have it set to max. Whatever it takes to make sure you can hear the sound effects clearly. I don't know if basic enemies do this, but each boss will issue a tell-tale sound that will inform you of what's coming next. For instance, with the Hell Vanguard (the reaper wanna-be), the sound of the bell means that you should prepare for him to teleport and then do one of his two special attacks. It's a bigger help than you might think at first.

Well I haven't had time to get back to this yet, but I think what's throwing me off is that "hard" games like God of War and Ninja Gaiden are hard to beat, not hard just to survive in. I've gotten spoiled by bosses that are difficult to kill, but easy enough to dodge while you figure out the patterns. DMC doesn't seem to hold back at all, you're in a fight just to survive from the start. Ninja Gaiden was about perfect for me in difficulty, same with God of War. The first Devil May Cry broke me though, I could never get past the big falcon looking boss (and I'm told he shows up a second time too!), so after being humbled by DMC, I skipped DMC2 and 3 until hearing this was a good deal. Maybe I'll make it through this one eventually, but it's going to take some getting used to.

I recommend still skipping DMC2. It was way easier than DMC, but also way crappier. There were some cool parts, but it was mostly junk. I'm really glad they did 3 right.

If you want to feel good about yourself, try playing dmc3 on easy. I wanted to see how easy it was with vergil. It's incredibly easy. I beat agni and ruda without getting hit once.

Yay, I made it to the next boss!

I'm having a good time I guess, but $20 was about right for this game. It's no God of War or Ninja Gaiden.

Jab2565

Yeah gow and gaiden are great. Still working my way on very hard in ninja gaiden black.

I like this game more and more as I go on. I've just beaten Agni & Rudra, I don't really know how far into the game that is, but I think it was around the Cerberus battle that I really started "getting it." This game has a lot working against it, but once you're actually comfortable enough with it enough to start, I dunno, making devils cry, you get sucked in and enjoy it anyway. I like that the bosses so far aren't super gimmicky. It's still all about finding the patterns and knowing when to strike and when to dodge, but it's not an exact and punishing science. It's not like, flip three switches, throw a bomb in its mouth, and then you can hurt it for 3 seconds before it starts attacking you, or something. You can kinda just wing it and still be accomplishing something, you just might not be fighting as efficiently as possible. Let's hope they don't turn around and change everything I like in the rest of the game.

It carries itself quite well up until the conclusion. Most boss encounters remain as interesting and dynamic as what you have seen already, and the developing weaponry and combat 'styles' keep the action fresh. It does have a pretty rigid start though, but the 'wow' factor grows exponentially with every addition to your repertoire. Continue to experiment and have fun!

Yay, I just fought my way out of a big thing. Through its eye. I should've gone to bed. I guess this would be a "quarter to three" moment for me if we go by west coast time, cause here it is, quarter to six over here on the east coast. I work second shift, so I didn't even start playing till around 1 this morning.

Every time I beat a boss, I of course wanted to see the cutscenes for the end of that level and the begining of the next. And I generally had enough red whatzits to get a new move, which of course I want to play around with. And since I've killed a few guys, maybe I'll just keep killing them till I die and save so I have some more red whatzits. Oh, and now I'm all the way through the level and there's another boss. I can't stop now, I don't want to do the whole level again in the morning. Yes, I beat him! Now I want to see the cutscenes...

It just occurred to me that if our HDTV was gonna have any lag (as discussed in the Guitar Hero thread) I would surely see it in a game like DMC3, as fast paced as it is. So I guess I'm in the clear! Guitar Hero, here I come! (eventually).

Wholly Schmidt

So, actually, my friend brought over Guitar Hero. And it does lag. Apparently. He noticed it at least. When we switched from component cables to composite, he said it felt a lot better, though it still wasn't dead on. It doesn't seem to be messing with me. I can get through some medium songs ok after an evening of playing.
