Ok, what's up with the Canon in D guitar? Somewhere, likely on these boards but maybe not, someone else posted a link to some kid playing the same thing, Canon in D on an electric. Just like in this video, it's being played over another recording, and I can't find the other one to compare, but it sounds very similar to how I remember it. Are these guys just faking this to some existing version? It really sounds familiar.

If you search Google vdieo for "Canon in D" you'll find a bunch of videos like this and most of them mention JerryC, so I'm assuming that his was the first.

1. It's not a pilot episode of anything, it was a comedy short making fun of the japanese for mindlessly parroting things from western media.

2. When this first made the rounds a year or two ago, I remember reading somewhere that the daughter's japanese was fairly poor, and had a korean accent. As my japanese knowledge is limited to poorly-pronounced phrasebook stuff, I can't judge the accuracy of this claim. :)

That's the sort of thing you see people do in a movie and say "That would never work in real life." Except that apparently, it does.

The angry French (or is it Russian? It sounded French, though) hiphop music is also worth the price of admission. And when the guy was swinging around on the monkey bars, he looked a lot like the gibbon in that other video.

Top Gear is great... and I don't even care about cars.
They also raced a Harrier Jumpjet around their course and drove a car of the deck of an aircraft carrier (can't remember to prove what).

There's a second part to that Toyata bit, where they in a latter show bring it in again, and put it on top of a high rise about to be imploded... they drive it out of the ruins. Wobbly and broken, but still running.

If only a show like Mythbusters had the budget of Top Gear (and all those willing participants/sponsors like Virgin Atlantic and the Royal Navy)

Yes, its on Discovery channel, but they tend to be a couple of years old. Still worth watching for all the crazy stuff they do. The 'fast car vs public transport' or 'fast car vs airplane travel' races are some of my favourites. I will go and look for them on google video right now!

Yeah they show Top Gear but it's usually an amalgamation of old footage from the UK version. Hammond and Clarkson did record new introductions to the pieces for the American audience, though. Sort of a 'best of...".

There's an American version of Top Gear that will be starting fairly soon, though. I don't know too much about it. One of the hosts will be a professional Drag Racer and another will be a Reality TV star...

Wow, that shit is crazy yo. My guess is that they're dynamically updating the fonts every frame and basically making it an 80x25 screen. In fact, to get 16 colors they'd have to do it that way since CGA in 'graphics' mode is 4 colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black).

In fact, now that I think about it, this wouldn't be that hard to do. Use a preprocessor on a faster machine to digitize from movie to text frames w/ best fit font table creation, similar to doing JPG meets palette selection. Store those as a sequence of fonts + text pages and just blit as fast as you can.

Thats the Channel 5 version of Top gear with a couple of the old Top Gear Presenters (including the curiously attractive Vicki Butler-Henderson) who legged it when BBC canned the series a couple of years back before bringing it back again.

Also, were they the program that showed off the new American Lotus Elise by having it tear around an airfield and avoid lock-on from an Apache helicopter, or was that something else?

CGA had an "undocumented" 16-color mode. The original Starflight game used it. It ran at 160x200, and if you tried to view a game written for it on a non-CGA card, it looked totally screwy.

I had to use "debug" on the DOS command line to apply the patch EA provided in order to play my copy of Starflight.

Back in the day in the scene, we called it "ANSI art". ;)

But yeah, I'm guessing it was pre-processed as well. Still pretty damn amazing to update a full screen of text at 30fps with sound. I wrote text-based art shit in ASM back in the day and you get too crazy and it would start to sparkle or chug... even on a 486!

Yeah there was an ANSI art group named iCE that developed an ANSI driver (so you didn't have to use ANSI.SYS from MS-DOS) that used some of the undocumented stuff. For instance, their driver allowed 16 foreground colors and 16 background colors at a time. They somehow disabled the blink bit (since no one much cared for blinking text) and used it for more color depth instead. It got to where you'd have to use the driver to properly view what a couple of their artists did.

shift6, that's actually a different thing. This is not a text mode; it's an actual CGA graphics mode, 160x200x4bpp (for the binary impaired, 16 colors), not text mode.

Although now that ya mention it that's probably text mode there in the video with Trixter.

Now I have to stalk Trixter and drop him a "hello."

Huh. It looked like some kind of hardcore text mode ANSI tricks to me, I guess since the video looks blocky and reminded me of the 80x25 days (sigh).

the dude passed them like they are standing still.

Speed is relative. If he's going 180mph and they're only going 130mph, it's the same relative speed as if passing a stationery object at 50mph.

Have a look at the Top Gear video of Sabine Schmidt (http://www.topgear.com/content/timetoburn/sections/videos/) owning the Nurburgring in a van. Story behind it is that Clarkson drove it in some very nice car, slowly, and she told him she could do better in a van.

Also, Top Gear is one of the most popular BitTorrent shows I know of, it'll be a snap to find the whole episode as a XVID.

Edit - Season 6, episode 7.

talking of which, new series started on sunday.

There was talk they were going to get Sabine to do the test driving because Clarkson had done his back in, but that seemed to dissapear pretty quickly.

They did get a new female presenter though. She's a cute blonde, but I think they got her purely for looks. She doesn't seem to be interested in cars. In fact she doesn't seem to be interested in anything other than lying around.

Haha, I'm really not sure what the point is with this. Thought the episode was rather "blah", except for the Koenigsegg.

Actually, we can't, because google video's vetting rpcoess can take 3-4 weeks. you can put a youtube video up much quicker.

Makes sense. The folding technique used in those swords would result in a highly variant density pattern, which kills shockwaves. Ceramic/Metal plates are used as armor for tanks for this very reason. Also, lead isn't know for its sturdiness.
