Okay, so I've added dozens of names to my xbox 360 friends list from my three most frequented and respected message boards, Qt3, OO, and GT, and I constantly get pop ups telling me so-and-so is online. That's technically interesting and viewing each "friend's" achievements is neato, too, but when do we start playing some online games? That's the hard part. Xbox live doesn't seem to have a calendaring/scheduling feature. I suppose I could simply send one of y'all an invite to play head-to-head, but I'm really interested in 6+ person matches.

Yes, let's make with the multiplayer games. I missed that last PGR3 8 man, and I was hoping it would be a regular thing, but I haven't seen anything going on.
I suppose I'm just as lazy as the next guy, hoping someone else would take the initiative, and by gum, it sounds as if that's exactly what philosophist is looking to do. I look forward to the invites rolling my way shortly! :D

Since you made this topic I figured my question would fit best here. It's nice that the Xbox360 has all these notifications when friends come online but as soon as you build up a decent list of people it's annoying as hell trying to do stuff like watch a DVD and have the notifications spring up all the time.
I know here's a setting to remove notifications but does this also mean I won't be notified when there's an actual message for me? Because that I would like a notification for.
It's like all the IMs I've used I always disable the "Notify me when someone is online". Obviously however I would like to know when I get a message. Anyone know how to achieve that on the 360?

Click the xbox button, select personal settings, and then click notifications. You can switch them off from there.

It's funny, but I realized that I don't mind the notifications of people coming online while watching DVDs. They're fairly subtle. Sometimes seeing one actually inspires me to hit the Guide button on my remote and check to see what they're playing. Which in turn has inspired me to play myself.
I'd prefer some invitations to game, though! It would be nice if there was a "Start up an online game and broadcast a message to people in your friends list who own that game about it" type functionlity built into Live. It's almost there, but not quite. You can compare games with a Friend, and you can issue game invites, but combining the two, plus the "broadcast" would be taking it to the next level.

More PGR would be lovely. If I see you chaps online, I'll fire an invite across. I did try Perfect Dark online for the first time last night. Oh dear.

zabuni, yes but doesn't that remove notifications for actual messages? I'd like to be notified for that.
Ephraim, I don't mind the "xxxxx is onilne" message that much but the GF gets a little annoyed while trying to watch disc 2 of Lost to have it pop up every 5-10 mins.

IIRC Halo2 has a broadcast invite feature.
