Original Call of Duty--stupid weapons training question

The first part of the weapons training, the instructor tells you to pick up the two carbines, and then objectives say to hit the target 12 times. I blast the target over and over again, but I don't clear the objective--even after unloading 100+ rounds into it. What stupid thing am I missing here?

Try hitting it six times while viewing down the sight. Also try shooting it six times while in different stances.
