Brigandine, published by Atlus, is a very seductive little fantasy rpg/wargame. It's got that "just one more turn" thing going on. I picked it up cheap after reading about it in a SRPG thread elsewhere and I'm really enjoying it. See, sometimes I'm positive!

One thing: the evil Emperor is named Zemeckis, like the movie director.

I remember playing the hell out of that game when it came out, but no one else I knew even heard of it. It reminded me a bit of an RPG-Strategy version of Master of Monsters, which is a Good Thing. I wouldn't mind if they released an updated version of it for modern systems, and maybe sped up the turn pace a bit as well.

Actually, Brigandine goes up there with The Unholy War, as games that I absolutely loved that no one else ever really heard of.

Brigandine was great. One of the best SRPGs on the PSOne -- it was Dragon Force meets hex wargaming.

Ok, I'll be the dissenting voice here. I wanted to like the game...I really did. But I didn't like it. I was underwhelmed, but it has been so long I don't really remember why. I played it for a few hours and then gave up. I may still have it....

If I had a dollar for every time I alllllmost picked that up, well, I guess I would have had enough saved to buy it, now. So it is really good, huh? Damn, I actually had time for gaming then and could have bought it instead of the lame FF-ish RPGs I played instead.

I think if I had played this when I was younger it might have ended up being one of the classic games of my youth(like ogre battle snes, or rotk 2 snes, etc). I played it a year or two ago and many things about it are very nice. I thought the music, graphics, and gameplay was fantastic. The problem is the AI just can't compete at all even on harder difficulty settings. Sure if you pick a weak nation you might get killed off pretty fast but if you manage to survive for a while you are going to have no problems winning. This is more about luck than anything else as it seems the AI basically makes random decisions on where to attack, what forces to use, etc. I thought I read somewhere it was re-released in Japan updated(?). I forget if the game is multiplayer or not, anyone remember?
