Well, I'm not offended, but it is kind of silly. What with this thread and all the pictures of the lovely Jessica Alba popping up lately, I have occasionally felt as though I've climbed up into the friendly neighborhood backyard oak and found a big "GIRLZ OUT OF OUR TREEHOUS!" sign tacked to a branch. But, hey - autres temps, autres moeurs. I will just climb back down and launch flaming bags of dog poo at your treehouse with this trebuchet I've assembled out of pieces of picket fence and Tyjenks’ new bicycle (HA!), which is the only civilized response.

Dude, this is the internet, not our collective grandmother's bedroom. But hey, it's your site, what you say goes. And no, I don't pass around pictures of women's asses in front of my wife, girlfriend, or daughter. I also don't offer up anecdotes on how I routinely shave my nuts to the Cardinal during Sunday Mass, but the gang here seemed to go for it. Though, for serious, my girlfriend does get peeved if I don't let her tear off the black plastic wrap on the new issue of Playboy. Maybe the ladies like the fact that we don't act like fruits when a partially-bare ass pops up now and again. It's not like this site has a dedicated porn base or threads that are titled "Wich female FPS char would u most like to fuck" Funnier still, usually Gary's links offend everyone. I still want to kick his ass over that fucking Batman and Robin pic. Dunno if you have to waggle your finger at us and all over it, but it makes for good PR. I just hope you don't really want to be, you know, that guy. "Gee, wasn't Lilith Fair divine this year?" (Note that I am a monstro Sarah McLaughlin fanboy)
Conversely, I guess this thread made Sparky feel sort of alienated, and that's enough for me. Really, Sparky, anybody put up a NO GIRLZ ALLOWED sign around here is walking out with it stuck up his ass. Even if it's perfect, like Hugh Laurie's must no doubt be.

Also, I don't pass around pictures of asses to my wife, but I was encouraged that the most healthy relationship thing to do is not to act like a CRIMINAL for hu*man* nature. And as such when/if my wife catches me looking at a woman passing by she will ask what I think makes her look pretty/sexy/hot. Indubidably it's some body part, though lately it's been the ones that look classy that get the looks instead of the slutty ones.

I could give a damn whether or not you posted as many men's asses as you wanted to. Go for it, I say let Chewbacca run free.

-TomAw hell, I can't wait. This site (and your contributions to it) vastly increases the mindshare of the TomChick brand, and from what I remember Chet is paying for it. Anecdotally, loads of us are out buying mags with TomChick reviews in them, and the magazine editors who sign you all know it.
Now, for the plebes in the audience this place is just here for us to talk about shared interests and maybe rub shoulders with fame. Maybe we don't want to reveal our real names because we are in situations where our opinions on games and politics aren't wise for us to share with employers/relatives/what have you. Maybe this makes us pussies. Maybe we wish we could all live in Hollywood and get by on small parts in popular TV shows, reviews of our favorite movies, and witty attacks on uninspired games. For many of us, this isn't a real possibility at this stage in our lives, and we live vicariously through you. Don't piss on us, okay?
Me, I'm a cog-in-the-wheel programmer at a giant corporation and my relatives are all Republicans. Forgive me if I don't want to shout my personal feelings from the mountaintop. If you need my personal information to have a pull-no-punches argument, send me a PM. That goes for anyone here.

FWIW, I think Tom is right on the money with this one. When I transitioned to using my real name in my posts I suddenly had to start asking myself, "What if a potential employer googles me and finds this post when trying to decide whether to hire me?"

When I did register, I gave Mr. Chick the option of my Screen name by giving him both this name and my real name. Since my real name is about as common as dirt I really don't expect to get it on any forum that has any decent population.
But if suddenly my opinions are more valid and realistic with the threat of accountability on me sign me up and change me over. I tend to think the content matters more but apparently not.

I don't know why that makes you feel the need to explain several hypothetical reasons you want people on the Internets to call you "Stoker Ace". I'm sure you have your reasons.I was a 20 year old playing Counter-Strike in college when I thought up the name. It references a goofy Burt Reynolds character (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086379/). When I came up with this, I'd never been to a LAN party. I'd never spent a night on voice chat with other gamers while my wife listened from the other room. I just thought the name was fun for a character in a team FPS. Nowadays, I'd love to have a more respectable name that I didn't blush every time anyone said. I met some gamer buddies in front of a coworker, they called me Stroker. You think I liked that? It happens, and I regret it. A little. I'd love to switch to using my real name on Qt3 except for two conflicting reasons:
-I don't want to lose the (likely nonexistent) cachet my 3 year old account and 1500+ post count carries when people read my posts.
-Even if I could talk you into renaming this account like you did for Adam at Sierra, I wouldn't do it because I'm sure 75% of my 1500+ posts prove your point below. I *was* posting anonymously, and I don't want every goofy thing I've said for 3 years suddenly traced back to me.
But they're not the least bit material to the point I was making before your vigorously championed your masked identity shortly after Zen proudly announced to us all that it was okay with his wife for him to look as asses. My point remains: people behave differently when they don't use their real names.Yes, they do. If you want to shame us into using our real names, fine. Give me a month to rewrite my posting history and I'll PM you asking you to rename my account. Heck, I'll even pay a service charge.
On topic: I value the input of the female members of our community far more than I value the opportunity to see some jpegs of butts. We can all find those for ourselves. Making Qt3 unfriendly to any particular group is a bad idea.

Jeeze, touchy much, Mr. Ace?Yes I'm touchy! This is the nth time you've made fun of those members of the forum who don't post under their real names. We're not a tiny minority of the contributors that make this community what it is. Your continued disrespect for the choice of anonymity is starting to remind me of the same sins you accused DrCrypt of in the Serenity spoiler war. If you think there's something wrong with pseudonyms, go ahead and definitively let the whole forum know. Maybe put something in one of those stickies about "pseudonyms will be ridiculed". If you don't honestly feel that way, then quit bringing it up.

Anecdotally, loads of us are out buying mags with TomChick reviews in them, and the magazine editors who sign you all know it.
God, I wish this was actually true.
I love the female form and all, but personally I'm not really interested in a "boys only" forum, even if all of the people posting are men. I don't hang out in real-life with people who run around saying, "Whoa, check out that chick's ass, whoo hoo, I'd hit that!," nor do I really want to hang out with them virtually. There are plenty of other places on the Internet to post pictures of women's asses in, and it's probably useless to head there to discuss hardware, "A History of Violence," or to make fun of Gamespot and Jason's post count.
I do like Bill's strange sexual tales, though.

I don't know, people who have their pictures in the QT3 Gallery of Awesome People (http://www.quartertothree.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18280&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0) aren't completely anonymous. Stroker Ace does need to stop taking this quite so personally, though. Tom pokes fun at people who use pseudonyms, especially goofy ones. That's really all it is.
It's certainly true that people have a tendency to use pseudonyms as a shield to say and do things that they wouldn't if they had more accountability, but I don't think this thread is necessarily a good example of that. I'd agree that it's in poor taste, but what do you expect in a thread started by Whitta?
If you have a problem with it Tom, PM Gary and explain it. The progression of this thread would have been the same, real names or not.

Ok, I did the numbers, not going to bother trying to format a spreadsheet using BBCode.
Findings:
~50% of the top 50 posters use their full names.
~30% use pseudonyms
The rest use variations on their full names such as XPav, DennyA, chet.
I identified 13 people on the Top 50 list who were in the game industry. There may be more, but I didn't recognize them. Of those 13, only Desslock and Quatoria use pseudonyms.
What this means
Qt3's focus is gaming. Posters who work in the game industry overwhelmingly use their real names or a derivative thereof. This is called networking. It is good practice to get your name out when appearing in any venue relevant to your profession.
Posters who are not in the game industry also often use their real names, although not as often as industry workers. Interpret this as you will.

I've gone both ways with the names, I prefer using VegasRobb on this forum and I remember when industry types trended away from using their entire names on this forum. I understood the reasons why then and those reasons hold up still hold up today.
I understand Tom's firing on people, but Tom is more than capable of doing it without having to use the anon-is-fake-power argument.

I don't doubt that a little extra name recognition is good for the journalists who use their real names to post here. I also don't doubt Captain Beret's (<- My choice for a Tom Chick psuedonym if he ever decides to use one) point about people behaving differently with pseudonyms. You are both right.
In the context of this thread, and specifically in the context of luscious female posteriors, I think Captain Berets point is a tad more relevant though.

I'm not sure what account or sales you're specifically referring to, but if you're asking whether this forum contributes to the amount of work anyone gets from us, the answer is no. We used Tom before this site existed and would use him if it didn't.
Does it raise his profile? Maybe. Probably. But it's just a message board. I suspect other editors are more impressed with his actual published work--and are hiring him based on that--than his thousands of forum posts saying "Fuck Star Wars."

Ah! See, I got lost for a sec there, what with all the
[M]ost of you don't even have the conviction to use your real names
and stuff. Because, I'm so down with the second draft of your thesis, it's the rough first take there I'm all stumbling over, knwwhmsyn? Anyway, it sort of proves an incidental point of mine, about being "that guy." You know, since you're full-on Tom, 24/7/265 Chick, like what, what are you gonna say about juvenile bullshit threads like these? Tom "Digs But Totally Respects Women And Wouldn't Even Condescend To Refer To One As A" Chick, like. 'S cool, Dawg. I gotcher back.
But! I on the other hand, I did something very interesting and quite frankly a little disturbing even to myself with my penis while playing Dungeon Siege 2 the other day. It involved a variant-rules version of mumbletypeg, a front-weighted Italian stiletto, and a kitten in a cage because hey, somebody's got to express horror and concern, you know? And I'd tell you all about if you'd like, because it's Bill talkin' and not that, you know, other guy who hoovers Zyrtec and FloNase all day so his girlfriend's kittycat can live with us, because she's cute and I dig her and he's an adorable little furball and I'd do anything to make her happy and who's ready to puke? See Tom, I like girls the right way, too!
I don't know why that makes you feel the need to explain several hypothetical reasons you want people on the Internets to call you "Stroker Ace". I'm sure you have your reasons. But they're not the least bit material to the point I was making before your vigorously championed your masked identity shortly after Zen proudly announced to us all that it was okay with his wife for him to look as asses. My point remains: people behave differently when they don't use their real names.
See, there we are again, I thought you called us all mincing, cowering Nancy boys or something. Anyway, I can move on. Let's do this again.
My point remains: people behave differently when they don't use their real names.
Thank God. I mean, it's not all Whittalinks and JonRguing, you know? Occasionally, some fairly decent madcap antics and bold truisms come out of the anonymity the internet provides. Sometimes, like when I reference my penis, both are evident at the same time! And, you know, people behave differently simply by being on the internet, period. Telephone Tough Guy, heard the phrase before? Or whatever. You get to pick your words and craft your replies with a bit more care and elan than you do IRL, yes? I mean, what's next, a timer counting down the 5 seconds you have to respond in a thread without looking like a Stuttering Stanley?
Also, to further someone else's point, and I'm not judging, begrudging, pointing fingers or laying blame, but it's pretty much totally groovy for Thomas D. Chick to be TomChick on the internet. Because, wow, isn't he a gaming journalist when he's not making clumsy scripted advances on the hot blonde (oops, heh heh, I meant "intelligent and admirable female character") on The West Wing? The potential downside to people knowing who you are when you post is pretty small, meanwhile the upside is hefty, ain't it? And I don't mean to like scare you or anything, but I know where you live and what car you drive, Mr. Coasts Through Stop Signs. No, wait, ha ha, just kidding. I meant, some of us do need the anonymity. We have jobs and opportunities and things of the sort that might not jibe with an internet "career" of any kind. Does it give me or anyone carte blanche to freak out and barf up links and phrasings that would stop a sailor's heart mid-beat? No, but hey, it's the internet, if we can't clown around here, what's left? Tyjenks' basement? Ben Sones' back porch? The shrine Rimbo built for his wife?
Maybe I can get McCullough in here to Google up a study on it if you don't believe me.
I believe you, Tom! I also think having everyone use their real name and live with the consequences of goofing around in this day and age, in this litigious You'll-Hear-From-My-Lawyer minefield of a society we all woke up in, therebey putting everyone behind the 8-ball when it only benefits some and potentially harms many, blows.

Today in class with a 23 year old female on my right and a 21 year old female on my left I made an inappropriate joke and they tittered and one wrote down that I was going to HELL.
I then pointed out that H.E.L.L. stands for Hot Eligible Lipstick Lesbians and we all had yet another good laugh. Not exactly a riot now, but in the middle of a dry-ass cost accounting lecture, it served its purpose. I happen to go by my actual name in class, BTW.
All of my jokes in class are not of the blue variety and some are occasionally funny, but they are certainly more time-efficient in the middle of a lecture than waiting until a break for a witty anecdote about the drawbacks of Activity-Based Management costing. There is plenty of room for jokes equally offensive to all in the room and I remark about the nice cleavage on the lady in the second row and the hot arabian chick in my Internal Audit class. These are not immature co-eds of which I speak that are in college to get married, but women getting second degrees or Masters and easily coasting through upper level accounting courses.
All that to say, what's the big deal. Maybe you guys just haven't hit on what properly offends me yet, so that I can understand the context and need to tighten up on picture posting so as not to drive away the high minded ladies of the world who visit Qt3.
If I was being publicly braodcast throughout campus, no, I would not do my wholly inappropriate pseudo-stand-up routine. I do not think a clearly titled thread on an internet message board can be measured against me possibly going to the university auditorium and broadcasting an Andrew Dice Clay special.
So to recap:
An ass on a message board is not equal to fucking in public.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
More than enough people call me bago in real life to make up for the anon nonsense. If you need to put a face to the name I'm sure there's plenty here (http://groups.msn.com/odnarSnowPics/shoebox.msnw) you can choose from.
Those are some nice pieces of ass.

Okay, check this out: waaaaaay back when I first started posting here, in some thread that had a subthread with a working title along the lines of "Why won't all you pansy-ass lurkers post? Huh? HUH?!?!" a certain C. Cookiepants (okay, I sort of see a tangential side of Tom's point) accused me of internet stalking. It was borne out of some staggeringly jarring persecution/paranoia complex and the fact that I made fun of him and his rancid site once. Anyway, as it happens we both live in Vegas, and he told me an exact when and where he'd be to whatever, stab me or something and some nonsense about a wadded up 100-dollar bill in his fist. Hell if I know what he was on about, but I don't need a creepy loser like that running a WhoIs or whatever on my meatspace* name and trying to blow up my car or whatever retarded nonsense he'd dream up. Because then, I'd have to, you know, shoot him and stuff, and that's just a pain in the ass. You can argue he'd never throw down that gauntlet without the anonymity an online handle brings, but I'd've still told him his site was stupid (because it was).
Also, the only person that I think I've ever really offended was Angie, when I was telling tronnc how to get his act together. So, like, what do I know?

You may not have noticed, but this isn't a swimming pool or a European newspaper. Neither is it Maxim, IGN for Men, or the mall where Zen leers at passing women while his wife pats his hand understandingly.
It's a public forum where a number of women participate in the discussion, often bringing a valuable perspective to whatever we're talking about. The US' sense of sexual modesty is simply moving more towards that of Europe and Latin America, where naked people aren't considered naughty and something to be ashamed of. IMHO this is a good thing.
And incidentally, I don't really consider this forum "a group of strangers"; rather a bunch of regulars who like to argue, with an open invitation to new people to join in. I wouldn't typically walk up to anyone (male or female) on the street and talk about a woman's ass, but I definitely have male and female friends who (equally) aren't bothered by such remarks. Like my wife for instance, but then again she's from Europe.

I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with sexual modesty and everything to do with some people not really wanting to hang out in a place full of leering mouthbreathers. There are probably more appropriate places for people who want to look at pictures of women's asses, ones where they can hang with more like-minded fans of the ass.
Most women wouldn't have a problem with this thread, sure. But do you think they'd want to sit in a room full of guys who were all going on about how much they dug women's asses, and were passing around photos of asses while saying "I'd hit it!" over and over?

And the Tim Burton thing doesn't even count any more because I quite like Ed Wood and Big Fish.
And yes, the original pic is NOT of Adriana Lima.

You really think you would've run across Kitsune to write pieces for you if not for this forum?
That's a bit of a tough one there, since technically I didn't find him.
But I've found multiple writers via this and other forums. None that I'm aware of were doing it specifically to get work, and their continued postings haven't gotten them more or less work (which I believe was the implication of the original comment, that this forum increases Tom's profile and therefore increases the quantity of work he gets). I think I gave Tom his first assignment, what, 10 years or so ago? He was just some freak who liked flight sims, and did a tips piece (I think). Little did I know that he'd eventually win my heart.
I still find most of my writers the old-fashioned way, when they pro-actively send samples or pitch features.

So Tom are you offering to change anyone's forum name to their real one? 'Cause I wouldn't mine changing mine. Not because I have anything against fake names, I'm just not crazy about my nick (nobody spells it right, for one) and this is pretty much the only place it's ever used any more.
And for the record, I long ago gave up on the notion that there's anything but a paper-thin veil of anonymity on the 'net if someone is willing to put forth even a modest amount of effort. Everyone should just assume that everything you write can and may be found by your next prospective employer, girl/boyfriend, friends, co-workers, or mortgage lender. Or --and here's a scary thought-- your kids.

Most women wouldn't have a problem with this thread, sure. But do you think they'd want to sit in a room full of guys who were all going on about how much they dug women's asses, and were passing around photos of asses while saying "I'd hit it!" over and over?
In my special world, which exist entirely in my head, that's pretty much exactly how it goes down, yeah.
I also maintain that posting pictures of women's asses in a forum where there are women reading is disrespectful, boorish, and juvenile.
FWIW, I approve of this thread and want to join in. Since I have nothing to say, here is a picture of my ass.

By the number of posts and views in this thread, we can easily conclude that men (more specifically the broad range of visitors that Qt3 attracts) simply care nothing for pictures of women's asses. It is also readily apparent, most of us were, frankly, aghast and taken aback and offended and unpleasantly surprised that this objectification of women still occurs in the 21st century.

I'm not sure it's fair to say I'm 'in the gaming industry', it's been some months since I've had a reviewing job. Not to say I wouldn't like one - I'm looking for one now, in fact - but there you have it. As for my psudonym, I really only registered with it because I wanted to pop up and surprise Tom and Mark, since this was the name I used back on usenet, when I first met them (and several of the other qt3 posters). I've frequently wished that I'd just signed up with my real name, instead. It's not as if there's any anonynimity to this psudonym, anyway - most of the top google hits for it are (or were) links to articles I'd written with my real name square on top.
MatthewF
10-18-2005, 04:16 PM
I think the pseudonym thing is taken a little too seriously. For example, I still network, real name or not, and although I've always used a pseudonym on message boards I generally also keep my real name in my signature. It just happened to work out that we can't use signatures here. Since I started out doing mod work, people recognize me more by my pseudonym than they do my real name. I'm probably going to start phasing the habit out, but more or less I attribute that to my getting older rather than a need to be known for networking purposes.

That's why I said 'were'. And also a big reason why I wish I hadn't irrationally stuck with this psudonym - it was inspired in my teenage years by my affection for a godawful Palladium RPG called Rifts. (To be fair, all Palladium RPG's are godawful, but rifts is especially bad). For a year or two, the top links were articles at one review site or another, where I very briefly had my internet handle along with my real name as the byline. You really need to devote more thought to nicknames than most of us usually do - those things follow you for years, and years, and years, and that never seems to occur to you, when you pick one out.

Drastic
10-18-2005, 07:28 PM
That's one of the plusses of having just an adjective as a nickname. Feeding "drastic" into google doesn't cause any problems.
Mind you, putting my actual name into it still has as front-page half-a-dozen-hits-or-so crap I usenetted from a decade-plus ago. That's disconcerting. I can just imagine coming to a second job interview one day where the manager looks puzzled at me and says, what the heck was THIS about?
So maybe in the end, the adjective tactic was exactly the wrong one to use.
Or more likely, the internet will simply crush you no matter what you do.
I will also express a lament that Qt3 is one of the few places on the internet where what began with a nice female ass leads, eight pages later, to a furry with a big gun and pet human. Dammit, people!

Good one!
Here's a crazy one that I've been contacted on, as this dude apparently lives in the same city as me: http://www.canehdian.com/album/b/bentwind/shadows.html
Bent Wind was formed in 1969 in the Toronto, Ontario area of Canada . The original band consisted of Gerry Gibas( Guitar & vocals) Marty Roth (rhythm guitar, vocals) Sebastian Pelaia (bass) and Eddie Thomas (drums). While only together for a short time the band recorded and released an album entitled, Sussex, in 1969 on the Trend label in Canada . The album was pressed in a very limited quantities and today there is believed to be less than 500 copies world wide.
The album quickly became one of the most sought after pieces of Canadian music and the album is now considered one of the rarist collectable albums in the world with original pressings fetching thousands of dollars on the collectors market.

Yeah, I played in a band in the 1960s - that would make me Jeff Green-old (I think he might have actually been Tortoise Blue).

I'm lucky enough to have an "adult actor" as my google name companion. The one pornstar to use his real name and it has to be the same as mine.
I'm Jojo to a lot of friends anyway, and I'm not particularly enthused about broadcasting my real name to any old freak who happens to browse through forums I post on. I know that's stupidly paranoid, but I can't help being creeped out by the idea, that they can see me, but I can't see them!

I don't think it's paranoia, I think it's a personal decision with good reasons. Even if someone doesn't say anything that would ever get them a hairy eyeball at some future job interview, it's nice to not have every other pseudonymous person online associating your name with socially unacceptable ideas.
For instance, back in the usenet days, I used a university intarweb account and thus had my full name emblazoned at the top of my posts. And for instance in politicla or religious groups, things could get pretty heated at times with people passing around "racist" and "bigot" and all kinds of poppycock. Thus, through no fault of your own, someone else has put a tag on your name.
The same thing can happen here although it would probably be to a much lesser degree.
Meh. If the company is too HR fearing that they won't hire me, I'll be glad not to work for them.
Fuckin politics.

Alright, so both Kunikos' and JMR's images have poofed with no edit marks, which suggests deletion by someone with teh powar!
I'm not trying to drag out free speech arguments or anything, but if the above happened, I'm curious as to why. It's not a wholesale image deletion pogrom given the starting images are here. I actually saw Kunikos' image, and it wasn't pornographic (certainly no more so than Ms. Jewelled Thong Down The Butt), so what's going on?

To be fair, Tom did add a sticky in EE on the forum rules specifically about inappropriate images and thread titles and such.
This bottom thread is destroying everything in its path.
