Well, part of me is sad. Myst was the very first game I ever played on CDROM, and one of the very first games I really got into. But after that, it never seemed like they grew any. Just more puzzles, more incredible views. Maybe Uru was an effort to get away from that, but I never saw how they were going to make a multiplayer adventure. Judging by the way they released it, neither did they.

I'll never forget that little movie-logo with the triangle and the circle that turns around and oh man I am tearing up thinking about it ;_;

Myst was an awesome game.

I have always thought it also makes a good "gateway drug" for non-gamers.

Myst was one of those games that was just legendary. It is sad to see such an icon of the gaming industry get swept under.

It is indeed a bit depressing. They say the difference between a successful game developer and one that has gone out of business is time.

I'll be under my desk hiding in the meantime..

Indeed. Wasn't Myst the biggest selling PC game of all time before it was dethroned by The Sims?

Isn't MYST V the last in the series anyway? If Rand Miller wants to form a new company and make more games, what's to stop him? He's filthy rich, isn't he?

Cyan had a few properties they wanted to develop but all publishers wanted was another Myst game from them. They were trapped by their own sucess.

Considering that Uru tanked and Myst IV was actually developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Rand's coffers may not be overflowing.

I knew Myst was coming to an end, but I had hoped it was just a conclusion to the Atrus story and not the base concepts which still seem ripe for development. Thus, I am very sad to hear that Cyan has dissolved. Hopefully, many of the talented people who worked there will land on their feet elsewhere and bring their unique vision to other properties.

Very sad to hear. I have the fondest memories of the original Myst. It's too bad the furvir of MMORG'itis misdirected so much of the Myst franchise for quite some time.

Probably, but I think he did sink a fair chunk of his money into the failed Myst MMO. His brother bailed out on the project but he believed in it and funded it to some extent if I recall correctly.

I hope Rand can find a new home somewhere else, because I for one would be very interested to see what he does post-Myst.

I think that most times these sorts of closings are necessary to lift developers from the pit of stagnation. While Uru was significantly different from the other Myst games and was one of my favorites (although "Path of the Shell" was truly bad in terms of gameplay), it didn't set a new bar for the Adventure genre. These days, it takes more than a nice looking world to walk around in to get people interested. Well, mostly.

So, hopefully the folks from Cyan will spread themselves around, launching some new ideas with other developers that keep the spirit of Myst alive while being innovative in an increasingly dull gaming industry.

I also hope that Myst V is a fitting ending to the series and wasn't chopped up in the final run to publishing because they ran out of cashflow. It's not a good sign when the company is shutdown before the release of a game.

If I wanted to buy a Cyan game for my fiancee for her new iBook, which would you guys recommend (especially for a non-gamer, usually-- although she was hopelessly addicted only once to the game Parasite Eve on PS1).

Best to start at the start--if you can find a copy of RealMyst, it's a great remake of the original.

I prefer the 2D original or Myst Masterpiece Edition to the 3D RealMyst, but different strokes and all that. Regardless, to get the most out of the series' story, you should definitely start at the beginning.

If she's got a DVD-ROM, then do some one-stop shopping by getting the 10th Anniversary Edition, which has the first three games (Myst ME not RealMyst) and some additional Making-of featurettes.

The original Myst got me back into gaming after a five-year hiatus. Even though the sequels never did anything for me, I'll always have fond memories of the original.

I hated myst to death and did not 'get it' at all.

Still sad though, they had to have had some value to be so highly praised.

Myst will always have a special place in my heart in that it was the first game my Dad and I actually talked about. Before that he had his old school adventure games, and I had my platformers and RPGs ne'er the two did meet.

I actually like "The Manhole" and "Cosmic Osmo" better than Myst.

Excellent use of scale.
