Switch to "map" mode and it replaces the satelite image with a regular Google map of the same area.

I think what we're seeing is a picture of the scanner or whatever that digitizes the satalite data? It looks like the film melted or something.

All the bugs are not worked out of google satalite images. If I go to my home town, I can see to a certain magnification, but then it starts to fall apart beyond that.
