I got a PS2 a couple of months ago, and found to my surprise that I can connect it to the internet, and that some games have a multiplayer component. Is there any player base for multiplay? If so which games are most popular (and there is a chance of finding other players?)

I used to play a lot of SOCOM II, but not so much anymore. That and pandora tomorrow were the only PS2 games I played online.
I have a PS2 w/ the network adaptor, and I can't really say I've ever used it. From what I gather, PS2 online gaming is mostly limited to Socom, FFXI, and EA sports titles. Sure, other games support online, but the service doesn't seem nearly as popular as XBL and I had a hard time finding matches for HSG4 for example.
On the upside, this fall we should be seeing Phantasy Star Universe, Socom 3, and some version of Battlefield. Maybe things will get better.

I've got one of the newest PS2s with a built-in network adapter, but apart
from seeing that it actually works (loading up Hardware Online), I haven't
used it. SOCOM II isn't the sort of game I would play with a gamepad,
Final Fantasy Online is uninteresting, and I don't like sports :/
If you do come across any cool online games for the PS2, please post here :)

I played SOCOM to death on the PS2. Before Source came out, I found it superior to CounterStrike. Mainly because people couldn't cheat, you could go prone with a weapon (Not just crouch), and grenades actually killed people and not just wound them. A mouse and keyboard would of been better.
The real thing I hate about the PS2's online system is that it takes forever to get something going. The whole connection, logging in, finding a server to play on takes forever no matter which game you are playing.
I have Xbox Live but rarely use it. I find most of my online gaming is PC-centric.

You can get Monster Hunter for $30 or less these days and it's well worth the price if you want something unique that features online play. It's sort of like Phantasy Star Online in that you go on missions with up to four players, but you hunt some enormous beasts or steal their eggs among other things.
I have it and really only just turned it on one time due to all the other games I had at the time so I'd certainly play that with some folks here if they got it.

Well, that's *one* for the list :)
(I like unique!)

Played Ratchet & Clank 3 for a while, but then moved the ethernet cabe over to the Xbox for Live. For all the games that have nobody playing them on Xbox Live, it's worse on the PS2. SSX3 was utterly abandoned when I checked it out. ATV Offroad Fury 2 (which was bundled with the system for a while) had darn few racers. Can't say that I've bothered with other stuff, if there's an Xbox version that supports online, I just get it instead.

How's the multiplayer in R&C: Up Your Arsenal?
I really need an excuse to go buy that game.

You don't need any excuse to buy R&C:UYA, the single player is worth the price and then some. The best fun I had gaming for a long while.
I tried playing it online yesterday but I managed to screw something setting the account, so I didn't get to see if there are any players. SSX3 was empty except some guy who wouldn't talk to me.
So I just got GW. Apparantly MP is a PC thing.

Pretty slick. Tried it before playing the single-player game and proceeded to have my ass handed to me repeatedly. But ... the connections & gameplay worked well.
If you wait a few more months, it'll go GH & you can pick it up for $20. I think Sony has a 8-month minimum for a title to go GH, so I think the earliest would be August, more probably right before the new Ratchet MP game releases. I hear the new Sly Cooper game will have MP, too.
