Ostensibly over ethics, but politics being what it is, I suspect that a different faction smells weakness and is moving in for the kill in a power grab.

Well, if anything someone has publically said what many were supposedly thinking. Time to see if more people step up or if the voices of outrage are left twisting in the wind.

Most of the talk radio arguments I hear in support of DeLay involve the usual blame-sifting, what about this liberal, liberal mainstream media, etc.

I think Santorum is in a tight race to keep his seat and wants to run for President eventually. Either the whole party is cutting DeLay loose or Santorum is testing the waters and thinking about rolling the dice in the hopes of coming down on the right side. If it turns own DeLay bashing gets popular soon, he can say he had questions early on in the process and it will result in political dividends in the near future.
