Joe Strummer, singer for The Clash, died. He was found at his home in Somerset, England, with a note pinned to his chest. All it said was "Fuck you, Met_K."

D'oh. I was never enough of a fan to know anything about the band apart from the obvious fact that at least one or two of them had serious problems.... but I liked their music. A pity the recent Bond movie badly abused "London calling" (if that's the name of the song.)
Are any of the other band members actually still making music? If not, did any of them ever do anything independent that's worthwhile after the band broke up?

Fuuuuuck. I saw them a few times, back in the day. Pretty amazing times those were, in retrospect. All of their albums are great, though if I had to choose, I'd pick London Calling and Sandinista!--an amazing outburst of great songs over a couple year period.
Post-Clash, some of Mick Jones' B.A.D. stuff is pretty cool, and Joe Strummer's most recent stuff with his new band, the Mescaleros, was also not bad--he actually seemed to be in the midst of a nice creative revival recently.
Damn--this shit makes me feel old. R.I.P Joe!

Apparently Joe and Mick played a show together in November and there were talks of a reunion. London Calling is better than any eight Ramones albums.
Earlier this year there were radio ads for Jaguar cars, with a supremely pretentious woman pronouncing "Jag-u-ar" with a British accent. In the background, they played "London Calling". But the only lyrics played were "London Calling". I think they were giving away a trip or something.
I find the Led Zeppelin car commercials and The Who allergy medicine commercials a bit out of place, but using The Clash to sell very expensive status symbols seemed to be the worst misuse of 'art' I've ever heard of.
At least now Joe can spin in his grave if they do it again.

Hey now! London Calling is better than eight albums by almost anyone--but there's no need to disparage the Ramones. They were a huge influence on The Clash and the rest of the U.K. punk scene. The Ramones were not the enemy.
And the first four Ramones albums--Ramones, Ramones Leave Home, Rocket To Russia, and Road To Ruin--are better than the first four albums by almost everyone else.

I don't enjoy those "what's your favorite band" questions, but when pressured, I'd always say "The Clash".

The Ramones were awesome, I was just trying to get Met riled up...

"Janie Jones" is my favorite song.
