How to steal back a domain?

I had a web address that do to an error I lost. Basically it expired and someone snatched it up. Now they've done nothing with it. no web page, nothing. The phone number via whois is disconnected and email is never replied to. Soo... their registration expires soon. I would like to be able to pounce to get it back. Beyond just checking everyday to see if its available and submitting a purchase went it is, is there anything I could do to improve my chances of getting it back?

sites like godaddy.com allow you to "backorder" a domain, i'm guessing it just automagically attemtps to register it three seconds after expiry.

obviously backordering through multiple agents is a good idea if you really wanna stuff the ballot box.
