I didn't think the flaming shot was that dire. Wouldn't alcohol burn relatively cool? Isn't what happened to that guy no worse than a fire breathing act at a kid's birthday party? My impression was that it freaked the guy out, but he probably didn't get really hurt.

I hope that's the case, because that's the only reason I thought it was funny.

If he just lit his skin, the danger is pretty low. The alcohol would burn away before getting to the skins burn temp. However it did run down to his clothes and cetain artifical threads have an amazingly low ignition temp.

Yeah. I got a drop of flaming ethanol on my forearm during a sterilization process (gone slightly awry). It singed off my arm hair and gave me a first degree burn - though I immediately sprayed it with Bactine.

Rob's right, though - if his clothes melted onto his skin, that's easily a third-degree burn wherever it touched his skin. I'd guess it unlikely, though.

I used to do stupid flaming alcohol tricks all the time as a kid in highschool. As I recall, alcohol does not burn cool. That said, it doesn't burn hot either. Lighting some 90% isoprophyl alcohol in the palm of your hand is okay for about four seconds. But if you leave it burning any longer, it burns you as if it were boiling water.

Also, if you have any knuckle hairs, it burns them too if you leave the alcohol burning for too long. That's what really hurts.

I also microwaved various spirits and liquors to see what the stuff would taste like were it non-alcoholic. Dark Jamaican rum boils down to a caramel-tinged water with no taste. Kahlua boils down to a coffee syrup that is yummy with milk.

Well, technically that was the picture--it was just a big 65000 x 65000 transparent GIF. The fact that it breaks the scrolling in every direction so thoroughly is sort of the whole point of the thing. It's apparently an anti-leeching redirect from some site or another (I stole the link from Andrew Mayer in the Worst Fantasy thread).

The balls don't move through the entire picture, do they? It looks like there are lots of small, self-contained areas, though it does give the illusion of continuity if you look at the picture as a whole. Or maybe my poor eyes just aren't what they used to be. :?

I can find a few places where calls cross over between GIFS. In fact, I think these things were originally composited from "blank" tiles that already have the balls in their "original" positions on each tile, so you could randomly build new "machines" by filling in the frames and tessellating them.
