What's a good server?
Where's everyone anyway?

I have a bunch of low-level Horde characters on Doomhammer, but I'm not sure which one I want to use as my main:
Spleenshiv - Troll Rogue
Ashnak - Orc Hunter
Stampyde - Tauren Hunter (I'm so tempted to use this guy just so I can macro Interstate '76 poetry and randomly spout some off or recite if anyone ever says, "Hey Stampyde, how 'bout a poem?")
Magensha - Undead Warrior
Lately I've been using my Undead Warrior there because I don't think I've ever really explored the Undead areas.
Oh yeah, and then there're my regular Alliance characters:
Frostwolf:
Miho - NE Hunter
Smudge - Gnome Mage
Proudmoore:
Miho - NE Rogue
Glenfiddich - Dwarf Paladin
Gunmetal

Impervious, level 34 Night Elf Hunter (Herbalism/Alchemy)
Fairchild, level 6 Human Priest
Lightning's Blade (PvP)
Alsaha, level 16 Night Elf Druid (Enchanting/Tailoring)
Apparently it's statistically impossible for two people to be on the same server in WoW.
Earthen Ring: Alliance / RP
Vyrian, level 32 Human Mage
Primal, level 18 Night Elf Druid
(and a horde of lower level chars)
Dethecus: Horde / PvP
Soulbinder, level 19 Undead Priest

I'm playing mostly on Gorefiend(pvp)/Alliance, as Turzem. Level 25 rogue. I have a level 29 mage on Sargeras/horde, too, named Coulin.

Amazing how everyone seems to be on a different server.
There are nine of us in the QT3 guild on Doomhammer, Horde-side; more than half of them have not logged in for over 10 days.
I can only assume that this is because everyone hates me. Hooray! More loot for me!

Amazing how everyone seems to be on a different server.
Mostly due to a factor of real life friends, guilds, etc., I'd imagine. In any case, I'm on Daggerspine, Alliance, and I've got a 40 Hunter, 35 Priest, and now 19 Warrior. Having dabbled enough, I think the Priest is the keeper for my first 60. They start out weak as kittens, but she's turned into a frightening soloer in the past few levels, and I see her surpassing my Hunter in kill-ability in the next level or two.

My trial ran out yesterday - but in all honesty, I'd picked the wrong class to start with and got a little bored of Tauren Shaman. Once I started a Dwarf Hunter I was much happier.
Now I just have to wait for EU open beta/release. Sigh.

Someone said Archimonde is balanced? Isn't that the server that most of the gank guilds were going to?
If I get WoW, I'm going on a PvP server. I played DAOC on Bors for a while (medium/low pop server) and I'm tired of the low populations. If Archimonde is balanced, and from what I've heard probably has a high population, would that be the one to go to?

Definitely. Peoples are really underestimating the population problems on the long term. Choosing the right server is *extremely* important and not just for PvP, but also to be able to build groups easily and do stuff in PvE after these first months pass.
Archimonde is a very solid server with an high population well distributed along the day. Perhaps it is considered an "hardcore" PvP server but I don't think there's really a different quality of players from server to server.
This is a snapshot I took five minutes ago:
Archimonde
Horde: 1486
Alliance: 1541
--
Total: 3027
At least for now it's the best choice. With the time the unbalance toward the alliance may increase but I don't see a better choice available.

I'll finally be cracking the shrinkwrap on my CE when I get back to LA tomorrow. Looks like my Alliance char should go on Frostwolf and my Horde should go on Doomhammer. Those are the servers with the Qt3 concentrations (such as it is), if I'm tallying correctly.

My L21 warrior is on hold a few more days through the holidays, but I should be back soon plugging my way through the remaining Thelmesar and RedRidge quests before moving on to the Wetlands. This is my first MMO, and I'm always happy to join a group, so send me a /tell if you see me wandering about. Gough - 26 Human Mage (Tailoring/Enchanting)
Cathra - 19 Drawf Priest (Herbalism/Alchemy)
I've also tried to start an undead warrior...we'll see if that gets anywhere. I like it so far.
I like the priest much more than the mage since it's much easier to find a group.
I'm getting bored of the game though -- what is the game giving me back? Doing VC for the first time was quite a thrill. It had great pacing, created a real narrative even without any semblance of role-playing...it created a memory for me an actual experience I wanted to tell folks at work about. Since then it's been all downhill.
Maybe it's because I'm doing basically the same quests for a 2nd time with the priest. I just ventured over to NightElf land -- maybe that'll be new and different enough but it seems like more of the same.
I'm doing basically the same quests for a 2nd time [...] it seems like more of the same.
Does it? Does it really?
AlReed
12-28-2004, 11:22 AM
Fair enough -- I guess was expecting that I'd discover new quests the 2nd time around since with my first char I didn't know what the hell I was doing.
I also expected there'd be more class/race-specific quests. With one char I start in Stormwind, with the other I start near IF...but I still ended up doing the same stuff.
I guess Kudos to Blizzard for managing to re-use the content for different races.

There seem to be about six different starter areas with unique quests -- Durotar for the orcs and trolls, the Thunder Bluff lands for the taurens, and the undead areas for the undead.
Alliance gets the human areas near Stormwind, the dwarven/gnome areas, and the night elf lands.
After you leave those areas the quests start to overlap. On the horde side you're going to get funneled to Crossroads and Silverpines and you'll probably end up questing in both no matter what race you play. I think it's the same for Alliance.
So you can get a unique experience playing Alliance and Horde, but if you play a second Alliance or Horde character, you're going to be repeating quests sooner or later.
There are over 2000 quests in the game according to Blizzard.

On the Alliance side, I play a dwarf... I got funneled to Loch Modan and I've been leveling up there. I'm going to pretty much cap out, for the most part, at around 20th level (probably 18th or 19th normally). Then I'm being funneled to the Wetlands. But if I were a human, I'd would have been playing in Redridge and the like for similar levels. And would have been funneled somewhere else than the Wetlands, I'm believe.
So there are different paths within the Alliance, at least before 30th level...

Actually, there's a lvl 10ish quest from Goldshire that takes Humans to Loch Modan. Stormpike Delivery or something like that. Still, even though I've rolled tons of characters I don't think I've ever quested in Loch Modan for more than 1 or 2 quests.

My level 22 human mage has only been to loch modan once (a great trogg quest), and I've thought many times of going to the excavation there, but for the most part I've been in Westfall, Red Ridge, and as of the last two sessions I've started on Duskwood. I may not get to the wetlands for weeks.
My ultimate destination of course is the Altar of Storms.

Killing Mo'Grosh Ogres in Loch Modan around level 20-25 is pretty fun, because normally you don't get to fight them until a few more levels later south of Darkshire (lvl 30+).

Yeah, we (myself and my wife) went there, got a bunch of quests... got discouraged because they were harder than the levels they were given at, went back to loch modan did some quests lines we missed, went back to redridge and spanked some peeps around.

They're two separate quests, one from Stormwind to Stormpike, one reversed. (I thought I remembered having to bring the finished item back to Stormpike after delivering the plans, but Thottbot doesn't list any such quest.)

Eh, Archimonde is okay. The horde/alliance ratio really depends on where you're running around at. I'm fine at, say, one thousand needles, but if I run up to hinterlands or alterac I seem to be out numbered severely. Stranglethorn Vale is pretty nice for fighting in smaller groups, although alliance tend to just stand around the level 30+ quest place alot. Still haven't quite figured that out yet :(
I don't really have much knowledge as to how the other pvp servers are however, so its kinda hard to compare :( Overall, for all the cries of zerg and such, it does seem pretty even on both sides.
And I'll be looking for ya Ephramin, least once you get up in levels :p

I managed to achieve my goal of level 30 before the end of day Tuesday, so all is well.
I will say that I'm finding playing a Priest in this game a heck of a lot more challenging than anything else I've ever experienced in DAoC or Shadowbane. I've played casters, tanks, and hybrids, with my favourite character type being the melee/healer hybrid so far (the Friar is my first MMORPG love). The Priest in WoW is just so much more complicated.
I'm not sure whether or not it's the insane amount of aggro that healing causes, or just the sheer amount of options available during any given encounter, but I find that I'm always on my toes. Between Shielding, HoTing, Flash Healing, and tossing out the occasional DoT, I can't look away from a fight for an instant.
Selenia, I'll definitely be looking for you, if only just for a /wave, once I get funneled to more Horde dominant areas. A lot of my guildies (Defenders of Order) have been fighting the good fight in Stranglethorn, and I'm almost ready to join them. I don't mind if PvP slows down my levelling, there really isn't any big rush to 60 in my mind... At least not until the actual rewards for PvP are in.

The horde/alliance ratio really depends on where you're running around at.
That's how it is on any server. The Alliance just loves to hang out at the Lake Camp in STV, server be damned. I don't think I was ever able to turn in any of the mastery quests without rushing in there gangbusters style and spamming Fire Nova + CL on some hapless gnomes.
You are going to see more Horde in 1k Needles and Un'Goro. You are going to see more Alliance in the Badlands and Searing Gorge. That's just the way it works out.
