View Full Version : I forgot how hard Imperialism was

Man, I'm getting my ass handed to me despite starting off with some sweet resources (gold, coal, iron in abundance - enough desert for oil too I imagine).

I also forgot how I hate the treaty system =/

Great game though. Wish I could find a copy of the sequel.

I agree, this isn't a game for the weak willed or the easily frustrated.

I love Imperialism. It's the only game that has ever caused me to immediately run out and buy the game after playing the demo. And I do mean immedaitely. I played through to the end of the limited turns in the demo and was immediately off to EB to buy it.

As much as I loved IMP, and I too went out to buy it right after the demo, IMP2 was that much better. Fun game.

The one weakness I've found the AI has is that if yu can get to the sloop/frigate techs first and get enough of those badboys out to sea, you will own the game- destroy all navies and you rule the world.

Is that due to a weakness in the AI, or is it just the result of a successful strategy? Whichever it is, Imp 2 has the best AI evar, and is, as you say, significantly better than Imp 1. It remains, in my mind, probably the best computer strategy game ever made, although I rarely play it anymore due to its dryness.

I love both IMP and IMP2, but I prefer IMP2, and I agree, neither game is for the wussy strategy gamer.

Great game, but it takes a while to get back into the swing of it after leaving it for months at a time.

I prefered the original myself - the economy in the sequel was even more brittle and unforgiving than the original. It sure was prettier though.

Jeez could you please embed your link within a brief text description? I'd need to have a 4' wide monitor to not have to scroll side to side in this thread.

On the Internet, no good deed ever goes unpunished. If you were the original poster, I'd just delete the links and tell you to kiss my ass. Since you're not, I'll apologize to everyone else here because I didn't realize it was my link that had stretched things. You, however, can still kiss my ass.

Breaking a thread so that people can no longer read it is hardly a good deed. And your links were just search results anyway. Show some Christmas spirit and repair the thread already...

Back on topic, this thread prompted me to reinstall Imperialism 2. What a great elegant game it is. My biggest problem is my play style- I spend too much time trying to get my economy just right and as soon as someone declares war on me, it's game over.
It's a pity that they don't make games like these anymore- or do they? What is this game's spiritual heir?

What is this game's spiritual heir?

that's kind of an interesting question. Imp2 is one of my evergreen games, one that always has a home on one of my hard drives someplace.

I don't think there is a real spiritual heir.
The balance in this thing is just exquisite.

If you can always manage to stay ahead of one CP, you'll be ok. They'll consistantly gang up on the weakest sister. Of course that means you need to be part of that pack getting the spoils or you may end up being the weakest sister next time. That's the only real flaw in the game, the CP's are too predictable.

I know some Frog City employees used to post here. They did these and then ..Trade Empires which flopped, and then the Tropico Pirates Sequel. I don't know if they are still afloat.

I love this game, but some time in the past I tried to install a wrong patch or whatever and ever since, after starting it, I get exactly three sounds out of Imp2 (and only if I load a game instead of starting a new one) and then it goes silent. Even after I completely reinstalled my OS (win98) the problem persisted. Is this some weird voodoo curse or does anybody of you have this problem, too?

(By the way, Warning, please edit your quote! Now YOU are the problem. :) )

It's a great game, but I could never come close to winning. I'm thinking of trying again. Does it run on Windows XP?

Runs fine onXP.
I'm still getting caned because I don't join the dogpile on the weakest runt of the litter.

Yeah, I would love to find a game in the spirit of Imperialism (or Imp 2, which is IMO superior). The mechanics in both those games were just tuned so tightly, I loved just getting my infrastructure in place and exploring the new world.

Loved it so much I'd usually get horribly crushed because I forgot to build an army, in fact. :)

Hmm. Reinstall Imperialism until I get tired of it and then reinstall the sequel, or just go straight to Imp 2?

TomChick

Life is short, Nick! Just go straight to the better game: install Imperialism 2.

After this conversation, I installed Imperialism 2 last night. Wow. It is harder than I remember. The tension between building a decent military for the first strike capability and keeping enough food for the labor force is tight. If you spend too much time coddling the natives, you lose money and time on the Old World countries. If you conquer too much New World land, you need a bigger army to hold it all.

Anyone ever try it in multiplayer?

Ugh, how in the world did I ever figure out Imperialism in the first place?

I simply cannot get going in Imperialism 2 at all.

Imp2 is probably the game I most regret losing. I honestly don't remember it being that hard, either.

Was it possible to take a fully upgraded fort? I couldn't seem to do it in a manual battle, which made the end game sort of stupid, since I would destroy any roving enemies but could never make any headway on the ground.

Jakub

If you put enough artillery behind any fort, you can't lose.
