I've seen all the mods out there for DOOM3, but thought I'd come to the "source" to find out what mods will accomplish what I'm looking for.
If I'm going t play it through to the finish, it needs t be a bit better than it is right now.

Here's what I'm hoping to accomplish:

* More realistic weapons.
* A mod that when you get a headshot on an appropriate creature, you get a 1-hit kill.
* Realistic looking flashlight (or light) on every (or most weapons).
* Blood and bullet holes stay around a lot longer.
* Enemies don't disappear.
* Better (more scary) sounds.
* Better enemy AI.

I'm also kind of wondering (if they're all in different mods), how you run them all together? I know how to run just 1 mod, but not how to run multiples. Thanks so much! :D

I think this (http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/dci/painkiller/index.html) is the "mod" you're looking for. :)

Sorry for the plug, but I cover all of the DOOM 3 mods in a feature in the current issue of CGM. It's on newsstands now! ;-)

Yea Brett, I get CGM :) , that's what got me started looking! Then I got a bit overwhelemd, and it seems mods are spread all over, and not all of them are desribed very well.

Oh Tom, I thought you'd linked me to a megamod! hehe, funny! :D

Is better AI likely? All of the other improvements seem like they'd be easy enough, and a couple could probably just be a few tweaked config settings, but reworking AI to any degree for the single player game seems like it'd be a lot to tackle.

OK, scratch better AI off the list. How about better gameplay?

Oh don't necessarily scratch it off the list, I was just asking, I don't know it can't be done, but I was curious about it. Better gameplay is too vague anyway.

OK, scratch better gameplay off too. I just want the Mars areas to look/feel more like Mars, and not the way it "feels" now.

I've seen games where they created 3rd party bots, (Counter strike for example) so making AI is possible. But it's probably a hard task that no one will bother for some stupid demons.

Yeah, I remember seeing additions to other game types, but I can't think of a game ever having someone redo the single player AI of the regular game.

But Tom, that only covers:

* Blood and bullet holes stay around a lot longer.

What about the other features he was looking for?

I'd love to see a mod that bumps the difficulty up a notch or two. And manages to balance the stupid Soul Cube. Once I got that thing I;m not sure if I ran into any situations that were really challenging. The easy gameplay is definitely my biggest gripe with the game.

I wasn't a big fan of Painkiller, but one thing you can say about it is that it was much more like DOOM than DOOM 3 was. If someone is actually looking for a DOOM-like experience, they're much better off playing Painkiller. I can see where Tom's coming from.

I guess I didn't think he was looking for a more Doom 1-like experience based on the features he listed.

I'm looking for more of a HL-2 experience :) Not a DOOM-like experience.

Understood. I'm afraid you're not going to wring one of those out of D3, however, no matter how many mods you apply :)

Yeah, PK is a lot more like Doom than Doom 3 was. But Doom 3 was arguably more like Doom 2 than Painkiller was, for whatever that's worth....

For crimony's sake, some people think mods don't take any time to finish.

Doom3 hasn't been out that long yet.

I just keep hoping that a co-op mod eventually comes out. I would be more than content just with that. :D

So Doom and Doom 2 were that different?

Next you're going to tell me that you can tell the difference between butter and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.

One guy holds the flashlight while the other shoots?

Lokust

Naw, get four guys together and one is the designated flashlight holder, and he can pass the flashlight to someone else in the crew if he wants. The mechanic would work like the bucket in that Final Fantasy gamecube/gameboy advance title.

What I was getting at was that Doom 2 had more monster closets than Doom 1 had. And yeah, they were quite a bit different to me -- Doom 2 was a lot more frantic and difficult for a number of reasons that are probably beyond the scope of this thread. But of course, your mileage may vary.

What doom3 really needs is bot AI for multiplayer so people could test maps

What Doom 3 really needs is a professional total conversion mod by a different development team which is then published to retail. That might come close to fixing the fundamental flaws of Doom 3.
