So I went to IMDB to check out some facts about Don Knotts. Holy shit, check this out:

Veteran of the Second World War who was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with 4 bronze service stars), Army Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge (with Carbine Bar) and Honorable Service Lapel Pin.

Ha ha -- apparently Barney Fife was a lot deadlier than anyone knew.

Now I'm hoping we'll discover someday that Don Knotts was actually the CIA's top agent, even deadlier than Chuck Barris.

Not that Don Knotts isn't a total badass, but none of those are combat medals.

Although the U.S. was in the midst of fighting World War II at the time, Don Knotts saw no combat (and was certainly not a drill sergeant) — he was tapped for a special services unit and spent his hitch touring the Pacific Islands to entertain troops as a comedian in a G.I. variety show.

Apparently you get a lot of medals for that.

As anyone who's been in the military knows, you get a badge for being in the service during times of conflict, for being in a theater of conflict, etc. It's not hard to accumulate that stuff if you happen to be in an active tour.
